Booting an USB thumbdrive

I'm wondering if it was possible to install a dvd player software on a USB thumbdrive to use it on a school computer. They have dvd players but not the software for it and only admins have the right to install software. I want to know if anyone has been able to install software like VLC or similar players on thumb drives to be able to play dvds on school pcs.

Your title is a little misleading. I believe VLC does have a portable version that would run off a thumb drive.

You could also use Media Player Classic (supports DVD playback) and run it from the flash drive, as it's a standalone exe.

MPC won't work unless there is a DVD codec installed on the PC already. VLC has its own built in codec so that one will. Only Vista comes with a DVD player codec already installed.
