booting a7n8x from external drive

I have an external enclosure with a lite on CDRW in it, plugged into USB. On my a7n8x, does anyone know if it is indeed possible to get the board to boot from this drive?

I've tried booting from various USB drives (Pen, HD, CD) doesnt seem to acknowledge them. I have tried playing with the boot device settings in the bios with no luck. Emails to Asus also go unanswered. I ended up caving in and buying a floppy drive for flashing etc....

There was an article at the Inquirer or The Register I forget which, that found a company making dos drivers for USB storage devices.

so a dos style boot disk might be possible.
