Boot manager missing message when trying to boot?

Hey all, my friend is trying to fix a messed up laptop. Everytime it boots he gets the error "boot manager missing" and when he goes to boot setting and chooses to boot from the hd it gives that same error message. He does not have a boot disk. Are there any options besides running recovery and wiping the hd?
