A new study sponsored by Bank of America claims that "almost half of Americans" can't go a day without a smartphone. Not sure how 470 people qualifies as "almost half of Americans" but there you have it.

Almost one in two (47 percent) U.S. consumers admit they wouldn’t last a day without their smartphone, and many consider their devices more important than daily staples such as coffee and television, according to a new report released today by Bank of America. Of those who use their phones for banking, almost one-third (31 percent) say they log on at least once a day, and four out of five (82 percent) access their accounts at least once a week or more.

I just polled two people that work in cubes next to me and thus half of Americas have a vagina. :D

Smartphones are very useful ... I don't know that I would put them above coffee but I would certainly rank them above Television. I travel a lot for my job and a smartphone isn't just a convenience it is a necessity ... I can easily check flight status, check in for flights, change seats, do upgrades, pay bills, check my balances, listen to audiobooks, monitor my exercise progress, make and manage shopping lists, and many other things (including make and receive phone calls :p ) ... I have no other portable appliance with that level of features and capabilities ;)

I don't have a "smart" phone. My phone is a Star Trek-style flip phone that can make phone calls, send/receive texts, and take pictures. And I only need it to do those first two things. I simply can't justify all the extra costs for "smart" phone features and data plans I would never use. I'm sure if my job involved a lot of travel like kbrickley I would find one very useful.

Oh, I almost forget the most important capability of my smartphone ... reading [H] Forums on the go

So people who already have a checking or savings account with Bank of America that Bank of America also knows have a smartphone, consider smartphones important. A shocking development.

They also surveyed additional people in the markets of "California, Florida, Texas, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago and New York". I didn't realize "California" was equivalent to "Boston" but apparently it is for BofA's purposes in this study.

I use mine constantly for work and personal use, but I have gone a full day without even thinking about it plenty of times.

I'm not going to have my Cell phone with me Thursday night to Sunday, and I am looking forward to it!

+1

I have a 7 year old Razr2 and it does everything I need from a phone. I tried using someone's smartphone and attempting to view a web page was nothing but stupid on a 4" screen. Can't see how anyone can justify spending $30+ a month for such worthless service unless used for work/email.

I have a smart phone and I don't pay attention to it, unless someone calls me, and that's normally just the missus and normally to find out what I can pick up for dinner.

A day? Most people with a smart phone can't go without for a minute!

I use mine for porn while im at the office. thats about it.

I really like my smartphone, it comes in handy for all kinds of things. But I wouldn't say I couldn't live without it.
My mom still thinks all smart phones are Iphones.....Wonder what kind of answer she would have gave them....

I can last a day without my smartphone but can't last a day without my PC.

Same here, except I don't do text and I have no idea where the cable is to be able to download pics from it.

One thing that ticks me off about my bank is that if you have a smartphone you can take a pic of a check to deposit it remotely. I asked them how come you can't scan a check (which would likely be a better quality image than a cell phone pic) and send it in for deposit via a PC. They just said no, you have to have a smartphone.

I can't go a day without a phone, smart or not.
I prefer a smartphone because it has movies, music, takes pictures, gets my email and lets me casually surf the net.

Not me. I prefer a large screen. Can't stand that 4" shit. Makes you have tunnel vision.

From this thread... a better study would be for everyone on this forum to post their age and whether they use their smartphones for all they're worth, or not.

Half of Americans would put their hand in a meat grinder if shown an ad for a shiny meat grinder on TV, and they knew a guy who put his hand in a meat grinder and said it was cool.

I don't even own a smart phone, hell a cell phone for that matter, so much for this "study"

You can get an unlocked smartphone or a tablet and just use WiFi. Things like Google Maps these days have offline modes and you can easily replace a GPS with one these days making even an older phone someone just doesn't use anymore very useful for some things. If you have a friend who just upgraded ask them if they are still using their old phone. You don't necessarily have to have data service to make them useful. There are other handy features that come with these devices that can help with everyday tasks. Flashlight apps, alarms, note taking, compass, apps to find car in large parking lot, not just a camera.

I'm not trying to talk you into buying one, but there can be more uses for the devices that don't need a data connection. I use my old Motorola Atrix (has a docking station), has no data service, I use it for a TV Remote, alarm clock, and weather, music, and a calculator to name a few things and it never dies as it is always being charged.

Do you really have to pole people just to figure out their gender? Isn't it a lot easier to ask or maybe glance even? And at work you're doing that too..ick!

Anyhow, I don't own a cell phone at all and I'm happier without one than I am with one. It seems dumb to pay any amount of money a month just to have yourself geo-tagged with a Google analytical device. What a dumb thing to do. For work with a company owned thing you have to carry, maybe, but people are stupid to pay for and get addicted to having and using them.

No smartphone. Land line only. Leave a damn message.

Oh yeah, and get off my lawn!

Actually, I told everyone to pull down their pants, and they have to do it because I am the man and I buy the drugs!

Well, I don't really have a smartphone (use a company blackberry and could give two shits, its just a phone really), and I don't drink coffee and I abhor watching television and haven't had cable in, well, forever. Guess I'm un-American.

Seeing everyone yacking away on their commute in their cars though drifting off into oblivion as they struggle to maintain lane position does piss me off to no end though. Really wish cops would enforce it, but I see cops yacking on their cellphones all the time too!!!

Stuck to my Motorola flip phone for years but finally changed because realized we were paying way too much for the puny service we were getting from Verizon.
Really can care less about texting, internet, "apps".
What I wanted was a solid phone and a MP3 player with Bluetooth.
I didn't want to have to carry multiple devices around if I was out walking or something.

What is SOON to be here are cell phone wrist watches. YEAH, like Dick Tracy. That will be what I go to and stay with.

I'm kind of shocked, my Grandmother pays $90 a month after taxes for a Verizon flip phone, no texting, no pics, no date.
I pay $90 a month after taxes for unlimited talk, text and data through Sprint.
I've begged her 100x to change services and save money but she doesn't want to lose her current number, and smartphones scare her.

Yeah, that is the kind of crap that kills me!
She can get a simple flip phone and pay 1/3 of that and KEEP her phone number with Trac Fone and have the same quality of service (if not better).

Know a lot of people that pay huge cell phone bills because they get a "free" phone with the service. Man, do the math. Free my arse!

If I didn't have to use a smartphone for working I wouldn't bother, but times are a changing I suppose...

I find interesting that everything my smart phone can do, my tablet also does. In my world I would rather have a small dumb phone, and a portable computing device not tied into a carrier contract for service. Also I find the larger screen makes it easier to read books, mags, and compose actual work documents or emails. So my smart phone? sitting on the kitchen counter relegated to making and receiving phone calls, my tablet on the other hand follows me everywhere I go.

I have been making this argument for a while and most folks don't understand why I would want this.

My perfect communication device would be the size of a 1st gen nano, or the size of current gen smart watches. (small, portable and easy to fit in a pocket or on the wrist.) I would then have this device pair via bluetooth an ear-bud for making and receiving voice calls. I would have this device handle simple tasks like voice, mp3, small screen caller id and what not. I would also have this device share its bandwidth with a larger computing device such as a tablet, or ultrabook. These larger devices would handle texting, emails, content consumption and content creation. Give me 2 devices that handle their perspective tasks very well rather than a jack of all trades.

Now what they need to do is to talk to people who don't own smartphones...see what *they* say...;) I grew up without 'em, and am here to attest to the fact that life is eminently livable and enjoyable without them--perhaps even moreso, believe it or not...;)
