From the reviews I have read... Blue-Ray seems favored. Less buggy systems, equal to slightly better picture quality, and 20-50 GB Recordable discs....

Now that things are getting closer....wich do you prefer and why? Also, if I where to build my system again come november....what would I need to make either one work? Are the rumors of specialized monitors and motherboards with security measures in place true?

Thanks!

I favor HDDVD, but I do really, really want Blu-Ray as media back-up for my PC.

Blu-ray all the way baby....hddvd can go jump off a cliff. Of course Sony's history of format wars has always been a losing one. Usually the Sony format ends up being for television, audio and film pros.

people touting bluray so heavy obviously havent been paying much attention.

Close attention to what? I have heard all the arguments for and against Blu Ray and HDDVD. In the end we'll just see who shakes out to be the winner. The group supporting Blu Ray is far larger than that of HDDVD (from CES in January and reiterated in a WSJ article last week);

Blu Ray;
Sony
Dell
HP
Hitachi
LG
Mitsubishi
Panasonic
Pioneer
Phillips
Sharp
Samsung
TDK
MGM
Disney
and two very big gaming comapanies EA and Vivendi
While HDDVD has in its corner;
Toshiba
Sanyo
NEC
Paramount
Warner Bros.

I think it was Samsung who is working on a hybrid drive for computers. When the perfect that, im sure they will make a player for televisions. That be the one I will pick up. The hybrid drives are going to be the ones that will win. Consumers dont want to choose over one format for one movie and then the other format for another movie. Hybrid drives for the win!!!

Round one has already been won by HD-DVD. The player is cheaper, and produces a better image quality.

An interesting and historical regarding the two formats and complete breakdown;

Unfortunately that doesn't show today's realities when it comes to the consumer marketplace. Toshiba's HD-A1 is cheaper and delivers better PQ than the Samsung BD player. The XBOX 360 already has a large install base and will be getting an HD-DVD drive.

Yes, Blu Ray is better technology, and if it was sitting today where HD-DVD is, it would probably win. As it stands, it has an uphill battle to face.

Am I the only one who thinks that, save for back-up purposes, current media formats are more than sufficient for day to day use, and that frankly, both of those formats could rot off?

I'm sure people have been saying that about every form of media since the punch card. Advancement in media has heralded advancement in everything else technology wise.

Last time i checked didnt the Porn Industry already said it was gonna use Blu-Ray?

If so HD-DVD has already lost the battle...dont remember where i saw that at though

snipped: list of crap

paying attention to the *people who already have bluray*, the enthusiast home theater owners and reviewers who are currently crapping all over bluray.
