not always true, if an objective is lost and the other team outlevels you going into them and dying multiple times trying to get an objective isnt the best use of your time, in fact its more detrimental than staying away from an objective and taking every merc camp you can and pushing lanes for exp to catch back up

I think the point he was making was that you can't just PvP and expect to win based on your K:D, and your response is a similar message since the various merc camps are like little mini objectives that make a huge difference when making a push.

The problem I've seen so far is getting your teammates to come help you do the objectives or take merc camps, but I'm guessing there are plenty of players like me who are just playing their first matches and figuring out how to best play the heroes, let alone the best strategies for winning the different maps.

I only really had a basic understanding of what I was doing on each map. The one with the Pirate Ship was easy enough, but the one with the Haunted Mines took me a second play through before I really understood what to do (only me and a teammate entered the mines, versus the entire other team so that was a disaster). The one that places a curse on your team (all minions are reduced to 1 health, your forts don't shoot) is pretty devastating as well.

It really depends on your hero. Heros like Nova especially are terrible at pushing lanes and taking camps so running around and ganking with her once you hit the range 7-10 can help alot. I had a nova game yesterday where i was 32-1 with over 70k hero damage :D and the Kills alone gave us in the end a 5 level advantage because i was targeting lanes with only 1 person so they lost an entire lane of exp while the hero was dead

Played several matches yesterday, it was fun. Definitely a MOBA newby so need to learn quite a bit more. Didn't realize you got gold faster playing different characters, and makes sense to learn their abilities, if only to know what is coming.

Only thing I saw was that the objectives seemed so powerful, almost pointless to do anything else than group up, snatch the objectives and mercs.

to an extent...on some maps especially the temples (i dont know the names of the maps offhand) if only the top temple is active, your team is grouped near the bottom if the other team goes all out for the objective you can gain more by taking the boss 2 merc camps and then leaching exp so long as the temples laser isnt hitting your core and all your lanes are at least somewhat neutral

Temple one isn't as OP; definitely haven't played all the maps. But thinking of the Garden map, Dragon map, underground mine/undead map; all of those spawn massive creatures that are pretty devastating if you're not keeping your own giant mobs powered equally or trading every other spawn.

Caves is definately the most absurdly op objective, pirate map is pretty bad too. If the other team even manages a 65-35 golem its gonna destroy you. Especially if the enemy team is wise enough to know theirs has enough of a strength gap and push 4 with it while 1 defends or takes merc camps

Golem strength stops at 60 skulls I think, the only thing getting more skulls does is make the enemy golem weaker, a good thing to do is stop at 60 skulls and get out to steal the enemy siege giants, the giants do a ton of damage to the first golem if timed correctly, they can help take it while your team goes ham with your own golem and the enemies siege giants

Have you confirmed that? 100 skull golems have massive health bars.

That pirate map is ridiculous. At least with a golem, there is some nominal ability, or at least appearance of the ability, to go ham on it and try to limit the impact. With the pirate ship...sit back, and watch your shit get bombarded. Last night took out our enemies core from 95% to dead with about 2/3 of it's bombardment.

Words of wisdom when playing with pugs and newer people.

"It is better to do stupid things together than to do smart things alone."

If the right move is to grab the boss, but not everyone is there, you'll be split and will get killed easily. Generally past 10, you want to be in close vicinity of each other, especially if you dont have knowledge about where the enemy is.

Gankers are exception to the rule, as Nova, I punish solo players. I can almost burst any assassin or specialist before they figure out which is the real me.

Knowing where your team is and staying near them is critical to end game fights. No character can win a 5v1 match, ever.

I continue to play this game.. I love that I can play 2 rounds in 45 and turn it off, or play a few hours. I love there is no gold, or gear. all skill.

sadly though, I generally play to the 2mill daily cap on xp in AI, then log. so far, all QM have been crap. no communication, idiots do stupid shit, etc. need to find some friend to play with. Im decent with Jaina, Diablo, getting better with reghar, zagara, the new johanna, a nd a few others.

my jaina is lvl 10, is there any value in going higher with it? my account was max at 40 a while ago.

For QM I find it to be pretty binary; most games are either steamroll or be steamrolled. Only a few that have been pretty evenly matched with little shifts in advantage. Best one so far each team got nearly to level 30 I think (~28-29), and we were able to take out their core with less than 10% remaining of our own core.

Because of the huge swings, I have a hard time telling if my skill needs to increase (def true, new to MOBA), although I seem to pull weight and lead in a category or 2 (while PTFO) in winning games. Have seemed to do the best playing Falstad.

Actually a good setup with Kaelthas can take out an entire team. I've had a couple of matches where I setup my flamestrike, living bomb, phoenix combo and utterly demolish a team. One of my most favorite characters to play. But yeah, always better to stick with the idiots of the group, if anything to at least get some kills. But remember minions only give XP to your team if a teamate is in the lane. So you need to split then group up once the lanes are pushed for a tower rush or a boss takedown. Pings are your friend if no one feels like chatting. I try to take the lead where I can because most players are just too scared to speak up.

Yeah, run into him more often lately and he's a pain in the ass. Not enough AOE skills on Falstad to try and hit him once cloaked.

Yeah I feel like I'm playing with shitty AI when I'm in fact playing with other real, live people about 75% of the time.

I have never been able to get into MOBA's and I fucking love this game. It took some getting used to but I really dig it. I'm still learning the characters but so far I've gravitated towards Zeratul and Nova. I get so much enjoyment out of stalking people and making sure my positioning is good. I also have enjoyed Diablo quite a bit. As someone said earlier, i love that this can be played casually or binge played. A+ in my book. Blizzard is on a fucking roll lately with this and Hearthstone.

its bad when.. say its the Mines map.. and only 2-3 including me.. actually go in! lol. /sigh

i hate to be bossy, and wont be a dick like lol types.. but.. Ive taken to a simple statement at the beginning of a map.. like

"guys.. when the tribute spawns, all hands rush to that please"

its helped a bit

regardless.. its a great game.

I had a really bad performance issue for a while a few weeks back, but taking it out of full screen windowed and just going full screen did the trick.

also, I created 4x5 cards with rec builds..for like 6+ heroes I regularly play.. heroesfire.com has player submitted and voted on builds.. that's helped a lot too..

if anyone here is playing regularly and wants to maybe look into building a 5 man.. add me..

Im XBarbarian there as well.

Is ti just me or does HoTS have many more noobs and bads than DOTA 2? I haven't played either that extensively but my initial reaction to HoTS is that there are a lot of players new to the genre.

Isn't that the Blizzard model? Take an idea, casual-ize it, and then profit from the weird economy they create within it :D

everyone doesn't need to rush to the tribute for that map

the only tribute that matters is the third one, and the first curse doesn't really matter anyway
in fact, when I play in a stacked team we just ignore the tributes altogether and play it like a dota map and push lanes

if you ignore the tributes the first two times, have three players landing, two players poking those first two tributes, by the time the third tribute spawns you'll have at least two levels over them and start rolling the other team.

the mines, however, do need everyone in them or none of the in them. but the common mistakes I see on that map are the team defending against a weak golem instead of pushing their strong one and going for the worthless (and dangerous positionally) middle merc camp, and setting off the siege camps before the enemy golem is more than halfway down the lane (past the mines entrance).

I see people get tunnel vision on these maps and focus too much on the objectives. Focusing too much on gathering coins or gems when their "worth" is in turning in. Rather than gathering all the coins it's more efficient to focus on the choke points (like the pirate instead of the chests) and take the coins from the enemy team before they can turn them in.

People will learn the advantages of out leveling and how to do it eventually. The meta is still being fleshed out, too. We don't even have all our heroes.

no

It makes perfect sense, really: the game was only released to the masses a week ago and since it is a Blizzard game it will naturally attract anyone who plays their other games, regardless of whether they've played any of the other mobas or not.

HotS is actually my first moba since I never got around to trying Dota2, HoN, or LoL. Shamefully, my first HotS game was on the Haunted Mines map and I spent the entire game figuring out how stuff worked and not going into the mines at all.

But hey, that was my first game. The real issue seems to be that the matchmaking system is throwing complete noobies in with veterans and people are tearing their hair out in frustration. I'm up to lvl 19 now and having a lot of fun now that I understand a lot of the heroes, objectives and strategies.

It seems the general consensus is to play against the AI to get easy wins/XP until you reach the mid-levels. Quick Match is kind of a mixed bag depending on what time you play and the kinds of players out there.

I'm more interested in getting a bunch of people from [H] together as playing with friends increases XP/gold payouts.

SupremeAim#1324

I don't play too often but when I am down when I do.

I wouldn't waste time playing against AI. The only benefit would be to see how a hero operates but unless you're playing against other humans more likely than not going to learn bad habits or nothing at all that will help in a non-AI game.

The people I've seen who learned to play against AI instead of with buddies against humans tend to be liabilities. They are, more often than not, the players going after merc camps as soon as they see them regardless of what's going on, rushing objectives without regard for how those objectives actually tie into the map or players, and just generally doing their own thing.

As someone pointed out earlier, it's much better to be part of a bad plan as a group than no plan at all or doing your own thing.

XP doesn't really matter in the way it does for LoL (masteries, IP for runes) as you open up all the talents/heroics for each hero invdividually quite fast. Actually I'm not sure what happened but for me personally even level 1 heroes have had access to all talents/heroics since a few weeks ago. Not sure if its like this for others now? Levelup still shows more talents unlocking.

Against AI is basically if you want to learn the basics (eg. the layout of the maps, what everything does, what the skills do, etc.) and unlock the talents without really any pressure. Or if you just want to play very casually and/or get the daily quest for sure (guranteed win).

They removed talent gating after the game went live.

They removed talent gating after the game went live.

It actually started before it went live although I thought it might have to do with the game going live, but I didn't notice it being mentioned in patch notes so wasn't sure.

With that being confirmed though it basically means level have no direct game play impact, so no need to feel the need to level first before playing against people.

It was talked about for a while and Blizzard said they were going to do it eventually. Probably went live during the patch right before the game left beta then.

Actually I was playing with my cousin about 2 days ago and we played our first game together. His talents were locked so the system is still in place. But I have been playing since beta and none of the level 1 heroes I pick up are locked anymore. I think it's a profile level thing.

My account isn't level 30 and all talents are unlocked. Been playing in closed beta since a few months ago and have only bought 1 hero with gold (not real money) so far.

Also it still shows talents being unlocked at levelup which makes me think its not universal or they'd remove that.

well.. for people nthat have played the various moba's... which of the other would you suggest?

LoL or dota2? Ive always heard.. the culture of LoL is really wretched.. so.. that kinda scares me off.. Im really not into listening to elitest whiners..

last night, for the first time.. I actually clicked a join invite fro logging in.. and played 6 qm's.. and won 5:1

prior to that, had only solo queued qm, and lost 99%

that was fun as hell, winning. I guess Im one of the bad's that have learned almost exclusively playing the daily cap in player vs AI. need to unlearns some stuff.

I haven't played DOTA2, but re: LoL community... I'm not sure if it's the affects of their long-standing tribunal, or what... but it's been awhile since I've come across an idiot who just trolls or talks shit all game. I only play 3's though, maybe they're still in 5's... but yea. The community is notably better than it used to be.

not sure i like it. cant control camera with wasd is a huge bummer for me. thats how i play dota
