Between Netflix, porn and BitTorrent, I'm amazed anyone can even get on the damn internet.

New data published by the Canadian broadband management company Sandvine reveals that BitTorrent traffic increased by 40% in North America over the past half-year. During peak hours BitTorrent is credited for more than a third of all upload traffic, while Netflix accounts for 28 percent of all downstream traffic during the same period.

Makes you wonder why this is really.

Are more people in general becoming pirates because it's free?

Are more people becoming sick of DRM and digital media constrictions?

Are more people resorting to piracy because of the lack of demos and try before you buy tactics?

Are more people resorting to piracy because of economic reasons (media becoming too expensive?)?

Hmmm...makes one ponder why this is...

Its definently NOT because people are getting more crunched for money each year and having to resort to these unexecusable disgusting practices. Anyone who thinks the state of the economy has anything to do with this is a fool.

You can also use it for things that aren't copyrighted materials or Linux distros. Crazy.

It's because it's to easy to use that even simpletons can do it, and no one really considers it stealing anymore.

I've had customers who are old ladies (well past 80) and can barely turn the computer on ask if I can install utorrent onto new laptops they buy from me.

Probably all of the above.

Since the only actually good movies come from abroad, like Skyfall premiering this weekend in North America, I understand the increase. Like nine out of ten blu-rays I buy are old films, 80's and earlier and you know what the 80's were like.

That is soo funny, I am not sure if I could stop myself from laughing on that one.

While Bittorrent bandwidth usage went up 40%, how much of that is related to larger file sizes, and improvements in internet download and upload speeds?

How much of the increasing is from the same people torrenting more vs an increase in the number of people using bittorrent?

Thank you!

Was a novel thought years ago, but in today's world? Nah ah.

Its sad that torrent and piracy go together in the minds of most people. I bet over 50 percent of the traffic on bit torrent is porn which is basically free now days.

you know, there is copyright on porn too. it's just "free" because noone gives a shit about it.

Now I feel like such an disgusting asshole for the terabyte of bandwidth I used uploading Black Mesa to fellow humans via Bittorrent for their enjoyment. :D

"During peak hours BitTorrent is credited for more than a third of all upload traffic" Is that because running as "server" on a residential connection is prohibited by most canadian ISP's?
I'm surprised they bother to mention upload traffic... until recently canadian upload speeds have been appalling!

If anti-piracy campaign is not working maybe they should try a reverse pro-piracy campaign

that's a shitload of linux distros. didn't know linux was getting so popular.

After reading that article "you can make numbers say anything" still rings true

Bittorent is a great way to move large amount of data over the Internet. Not all Torrent traffic is sharing of content people aren't meant to.

i would agree, i've send tones of home movies over the internet for my grandma's and other family members. whole lot better to send one folder full of images than just one images at time over messenger.

Considering the fact, Canadian ISP set the upload speed to a 10/1 ratio of the download speed, those figures aren't that bad.

This is Sandvine. Their business is based fear mongering ISPs over BT.

It's like those fringy anti virus or security firms pimping new vulns to boost their business.

So, WTF ever Sandvine.

Maybe coinciding with Megaupload being taken down and every other file storage place knee jerk reaction to absolutely throttle non-paying members to barely faster than dialup speeds?

It would take some time for people to catch on that downloading from place X is too slow, and then a steady migration to a different format.

this.

File sizes for movies and games have spiked. If anything it tells ISPs and content providers that people want more of everything.

Why are people still using BT instead of a usenet service?

I have a constant upload of Continent of the Ninth installer on. I think I'm somewhat attributing to that.

Its just simply becoming more popular.

People are become more tech savvy.

I have convened 3 people to cancel their cable and use a mix of Anntnee, Hulu, and Torrents.

More and more people are hooking up their TV's to their PC's.

This trend will likely continue.

Plus, it's not like it's that hard. For like 95% of people it's just download client, install, click torrent files, and you're downloading.

Maybe it's because all of the chain video stores are gone and it's Redbox Canada's cruddy selection or nothing. I can't even rent a video game anymore. What the hey?
