Nobody can "shut down the Internet." By its very nature it's self-repairing. If he shuts down core DNS, there are core DNS in other countries. If he shuts down the border fibers in the US, he turns us into what China dreams of. He'd shut down access to various .coms that only have hosts in the US.

And if they cut off the core routers, the world is fucked, internal networks would operate, but nothing else, and it could take 2 weeks to get everything fully online again
 
I wonder if the same complaints were leveled when the emergency broadcast system was established for television and radio?

I'm all for getting some kind of emergency system in place. I'm confident it would never get used until absolutely necessary (ie probably never). I've seen a zillion "tests" on TV, but never seen a real use of it. The same thing would apply here.

Imagine the uproar if a system wasn't in place but was needed. At least they are thinking proactively.

I guess I should state that I am not entirely in agreement with how it is currently crafted (based on how the article describes it) but something akin to the emergency broadcast system makes perfect sense.

I guess China bought Australia, and Australia bought the US.
 
I could only imagine they mean to disconnect all lines that lead out of the country and not the US's internal network. It would cause a lot of internal damage to american business if this wasn't the case. Overall I see this sort of action doing far more damage abroad seeing as the US hosts a massive portion of total internet content.

A good question to ask would be, "Does the president actually have the qualifications or knowledge to know how to implement emergency internet regulation effectively as well as the ability to know when to act?"

Hospitals have cash payment plans, and often if your on a cash payment plan, treatment is a whole heck of a lot cheaper than what your insurance pays
 
It's a Skynet kill-switch. Ths is the ONLY THING that will save the world when the internet becomes self-aware and decides humans are a threat to its survival.

I love our supreme leader with all my heart but I don't want him having an Internet "kill-switch", because it's to much government power that could just lead into a snow-ball for other things.

QFT. The Health Bill was pretty redundant, only case it served was to make everything more expensive for everybody. Because legally you can't be turned down for anything other than elective surgery.

Just make sure you hold your guns close to you, cause once they have emergency control power over the electric grid, this shit is finished. (Oh, you don't think that'll happen, just wait kids, just wait).
 
All it takes is changes to the root servers and com/net/us gtld servers and most of this can be accomplished.

This might not be 100% do'able but maybe 90 - 95% is. And its easier to "Defend" that 5 - 10% than the normal 100%.

This has been talked about for awhile now, we already have apps that monitor other countries internet traffic and trends.
 
I think the people who would be the most upset would be WoW players. Especially if they shut it down on a raid night.

President Barack Obama wasn't kidding when he said he was planning to "fundamentally change America." He meant it after all there's is no doubt he is a Socialist and believes the USA is a bad nation. Just see who he has always surrounded himself with before he was elected and after.

EBS is used all the time and has nothing to do with this. It's not the same thing. EBS is an alert system, not stopping all TV or radio signals.

Please use your own brain. You need to do your own research on our medical system. EVEN if you can't pay a dime you can still get major surgery. People die in Canada just waiting to get minor surgery. Rich people from all over the world come to this Country when their "Universal Healthcare" will not allow them to get treatment.

The cluelessness in this thread is epic with only one or two exceptions. As a start one might go back and find out who/what funded the basic research for what has become the internet and figure out why they did it. Hint, porn was not involved.

I have no problem with a kill switch. No president would be stupid enough to use that except in a real dire emergency (i.e. probably, and hopefully, never). When the entire Internet goes down, people are going to want a darn good explanation from the government.

Yes, that's what we believe in. But when the country is under attack, all bets are off. I have a feeling that in a true emergency, the president can do whatever he wants anyway, with or without a bill. Just like how we landed all air traffic on 9/11; did the president have legal authority to do that? In any case, no one cared, because everyone understood that it was necessary at the time.

Both choices in 2008 were horrifyingly awful. To pretend you're better for choosing one over the other is the apex of narcissism.
