You'd better think twice about making "big dongle" jokes in public, you might get fired. You also might want to avoid complaining publicly on Twitter about someone making a "big dongle" joke, you might get fired too.

At least it appears that’s what happened with PyCon this week when a sexual joke led to some very public firings, a virulent debate about women in technology, another virulent debate about public shaming, and now, a DDOS attack.

Can't take a joke, get out of the fucking business. I'm sick of this politically correct bullshit. Also what I do outside of work is on my own dollar, so don't ruin my work career over it. Live Free or Die.

Feminazis strike again.

I'm sick of this man hating feminist bullshit. Feminists aren't interested in equality; if they were, they would be over in Saudi Arabia fighting for women's rights. They simply hate men and they are doing everything they can to wage a war on men.

Are women so delicate that they cannot tolerate a joke? Because that is what the feminists are implying.

What happened to the good old days? If you had a problem with someone due to an unjustified slander, you cut his/her head off... :(

Dang, I was hoping I could beat the mens' rights advocates here.

Also, the people who are so loudly objecting to this woman standing up to a couple of chucklefucks are probably the same people wondering why there aren't any women in the field. This is why, morons!

Hypocritical feminazi in this case.

Also she blatantly uses the race card whenever she feels like it... a disgusting human being.

Seriously though, anyone, and I mean ANYONE, who uses public shaming on a whim and without prior notice to the person is, in my opinion...

... A dick.

I’ve been in plenty of public situation where women have made a lot worse jokes. They tell me that when the get together, they are far worse than men.

Depends on which part that they are objecting against. Does objecting against a no-warning public slander make me a moron? I mean really, they could have just talk over it face-to-face than putting it up over the internet.

Just a couple of guys that made a dongle joke during a conversation and she was the one that added the sexual connotation towards her.

It wasn't pointed at her. She wasn't even part of the conversation. She overheard two guys in a conversation behind her and instead of saying anything, she publicly humiliated them and got them fired instead.

You call this standing up for yourself? Dude! What kind of reasoning is that?!

Hopefully the mods are watching this one before the misogyny and racism gets worse.

It’s about “empowerment“. People are attracted to taking advantage of opportunities where they can use their strengths (or other people’s weaknesses) give them a sense of empowerment. We all do it to some extent. It is just a case of; what is your edge (or leverage) and your “Modus operandi”?

If the roles were reversed I'd turn around and body check the girls that made the joke, then buy them a drink. ;)

She didn't stand up to them, she publicly posted pictures of them and got them fired for less than what people (both men and women) joke about all the time. Regardless of whether you're female or not, that's a dick move and while it's unfortunate that she is out of a job (just as it's unfortunate the guys are), IMO posting about someone publicly making "dongle jokes" along with pictures of them is more worthy of getting you fired and getting you slagged off than making the "dongle jokes" in the first place.

If I say something stupid in public and I'm forced to eat shit for it, then it's my fault for saying it in public. If you're going to open your mouth and let out whatever kind of idiocy issues forth, then you'd better be prepared to own up to it whether you like it or not.

Funny how that happened, though; suddenly a bunch of mens' rights advocates say they don't want something they apparently didn't deserve forced on them. The irony is infinitely thick.

I used to get it a lot. I sometimes still do, when I walk around and a pack of drunken girls (less than half my age) walk by. I have had a few gay guys make remarks too. I have leaned to ignore it.

Dongle predates Python. Hence she might not even know what one is.

I have a dongle from 1980 on two different machines. These were the first hardware copy protection, made by Sentinel? or Rainbow?. It plugged into the printer port. No USB yet. It had a keycode embedded in it.

Later, it became anything that plugs into a computer that sticks out too far.

If somebody finds her mailing addy, I'll send her a retired dongle.

There has been no misogyny nor racism, as no statement has been generalized nor has a race been attacked.

The woman who made the public shaming did so in a hypocritical way, as shown by that picture as she herself has done way worse jokes than what she heard from the private conversation.

And she is the only one that tried to steer any comment as either a race subject or a sexist one, even if that had nothing to do with what had actually been said.

Btw there is indeed a difference between sexual comments and sexists one, sexist comments are derogatory in nature, sexuals one just tend to refer to human genitalia directly or indirectly through euphemisms.

And yes, the fact that she claims that racism can't be from a person of color towards a white persom is one of many hypocritical claims of her, and yes that makes me disgusted of herself.

Latino here, still disgusted at herself and those persons that are like her.

Are women so delicate that they cannot take a joke? That is what feminists imply when they get their panties in a twist over the most minor of things.

I'm so glad that there are no s where I work. We can freely joke around in the office and even the women get involved in the joking because they aren't a bunch of radical man-hating feminazis.

And no faster did i wrote that for someone to eliminate one of my points, the other still stands, and yeah still disgusted :p

Which reminds me, I need to play Morrowind back. Public slandering of House Redoran and all that... Yeah, duel to near death.

I can't decide what's worse. Her hypocrisy, or the fact that any legitimate claim of sexism (read: not here) is going to run up against BS such as this.

... I've just noticed, it wasn't long that RPS and Eurogamer posted articles about why the industry does not want a woman as a lead character... I think this gender bias trend is going to be in the spotlight for a while.
Also, Tomb Raider, so those articles can be nullified.

Who would point their dongle at her? She has a rotten soul.

Dongles are still used. I think all Steinberg software uses it. Not sure if other Pro Audio (or video) S/W uses them. Steinberg resorted to it, because their S/W was constantly being pirated. I want to say it took several years before it was defeated.

I would never do it in work. Not anymore. Coincidently, a few years ago, I lost my job with HID Global, over a similar matter. There was a very attractive female there (from administration), who kept flirting with me. I ignored it at first. She kept making sexual propositions with innuendo. No dirty words or swearing. Then I started to play back. Our boss (the President) who I used to hang out with, started to make a few jokes about us getting together. Some of the others there brought it up in the Monday morning meeting. I contacted her by email, asking her if she was serious, and joked that I may have to explain things at the Monday morning meeting. She took it as a threat, and accused me of harassment.

many of the comments in this thread are pretty ugly. Did she overreact? You bet. It was a geeky joke and a fairly tame one at that. I think she's more in the wrong than them, simply because she has a following and knew it would have an impact (though clearly she didn't think the guy (singular) would get fired). She could have made a post without taking a picture. And preferably not noted where the guy was sitting.

Do you really believe it's offhand sexual innuendos holding back women from the field?
I hope not, that would be incredibly near sighted, not moronic though.

Thanks, I'll make sure to get our cards from somewhere else now.

I was referring to the rampant misogyny int he field, shown in so many ways by this thread and the people in it.

A lot of pro audio software uses dongles because they think it actually does something. It didn't takes years to break Steinberg's dongle, despite the stupid amounts of time and money they spent on the checks. They are quite common in the pro audio world though. The iLok is the big one.

In terms of this woman she's the worst kind of hypocrite. She feels entitled to make vulgar jokes, but cries foul if anyone else does.

I don't believe either should have gotten fired. But both definitely needed to reprimanded. Both employers acted in a knee jerk fashion in my opinion. Both of these people will probably find better employment elsewhere.

Yeah, what were these two friends having a private conversion and sharing a joke at the expense of no one thinking? The fact they didn't expect some feminazi to be ease-dropping in and ready to use the PC movement as a weapon to advance her own career is just jaw-dropping stupidity.

If this is the reason why women choose not to work in a field then perhaps they shouldn't. If I, as a male, go to a job dominated by women you can bet every damn dollar I am going to hear a whole bunch of stuff that *I* really don't want to hear. Women have the exact same tendency to feel more comfortable and joke/gossip when around those of the same sex as guys. The difference is that guys either choose not to, or don't have the ability to use PC as a weapon to make an ill-gotten gain. The double standard and hypocrisy of all this is palatable.

Oh yeah because we all know the number 1 reason why there are not more women working in a job that has great benefits and pay such as software development has EVERYTHING to do with penis jokes!

Women simply cant handle penis jokes, or any kind of sexism. Thats why they choose to work in fields such as sales and service industries, such as waiting tables. Places where sex and their sexual identity will never enter into any conversations etc...

Yeah, and good point and stuff.

Well it's really a matter of respect. Do you respect your fellow man or do you think everyone should stoop to your caveman level? I know lots of people that get angry when you're not operating on their level of stupidity and degradation. I've even played games on public voip servers and heard the most ignorant, pompous jerks in existence. They think it's alright to say anything at anytime.

In life you need to learn that there's a time and place for everything. Those guys were wrong in cracking the jokes, and she was wrong for overreacting. Who was really wrong was the person that decided that firing the guy for making an off color joke was a good idea. Also the CEO of the startup that fired the woman because some hackers were mad showed that they are spineless also. Who caves to a hacker? If I were working for that company I would be looking for a new job as they aren't going to be around long.

I've done the bonehead role before in my 20's and I regret it still to this day. I hope these people learn also.
