Massdrop.com has the DT880's in either 32/250/600 ohms for $240 + $10 shipping.

Pretty good deal, the 600 ohm ones go for $349 on Amazon

I have the Sennheiser 555, the Audiotechnica ATH 900x; both easy to drive. I was always interested in this particular model. Will I have to get an amp to maximize?

Yes you will get better sound quality with an amp. You can get the 32 ohm if you don't want to buy an amp but for 250 or 600 ohm I would definitely recommend one. The Schiit Magni is $99 + shipping and is a pretty good amp.

Appreciate the Schiit (pronounced how its spelled? lol) recommendation will buy one from Amazon.
 
How are these compared to HD 590s?

Also, would the Sound Blaster Z onboard headphone amp be enough for the 600 Ohm, or would the 250 Ohm be better?

I upgraded from the HD555 to the DT880 as well, and you definitely need an amp for the 250/600 DT880's. I use them hooked up to my receiver with a 330ohm/0.5W output and they still bring a smile every time i use them. They will still work on motherboards/weaker sources but they do sound muddier and less well defined.
