can someone educate me in advance on how to secure websites
in terms of steps that can be taken to secure sites and etc

The big problem is "what exactly are you trying to secure".

To "secure a website" is so insanely broad a topic as to be meaningless.

What are you trying to accomplish, EXACTLY?
 
Guys, why are you being so hard on him? It's obvious all he has to do is click all the right check boxes!

But really, what are you trying to secure exactly? The web server itself? A kind of members area? Overflow and Injection attacks? Data transit?

Either way none of that is really a good "thread" question, it's more of a research topic.
