Mine would probably have to be the Voodoo3 3000....

thats a hard question.

my geforce 3 and 4 were VERY good b/c they lasted me sooo long.

i think my bfg 6800 OC is going to last me a while as well.

12MB Voodoo2

pure gaming goodnes, nothing like it at the time

had the best combo with a Rage Pro for my 2D and Video and a Voodoo 2 for 3D.

I was thrilled to death when I got my 3D Prophet II GTS. Quake 3 was blazing.

My current card isn't too bad either. :p

It's a toss-up between my:

VooDoo3 3000 - allowed me to play Rainbow six

Radeon 9700 Pro - leaps and bounds above my old Radeon 7200 - served me through many a gaming night (too bad it died and ATi sent me a 9800Pro as a replacement).

Haven't had my 6800GT long enough (6 months) to call it the "best card I've bought so far" just yet

It is a hard question.

The "best" I had is easily the BFG 6800GT OC @ 425/1170, but older cards were pretty awesome at the time: (overclocked) Rendition V2100, Voodoo2 SLI, Ti4200 @ 300/600, an overclocked 9700, etc. The Ti4200 probably gave me the most gaming enjoyment for the money and it lasted a long time.

Even the spare GF 6200 I have that unlocked and overclocked to triple the raw performance (4 pipelines @ 300MHz, 500MHz memory -> 8 pipelines @ 550MHz, 700MHz memory) is somewhere up at the top.

Um, 6800ultra...

But in terms of "Gaming has Arrived!" that honour would probably go to either my Nvidia Riva128 or the Voodoo3.

Probably the Voodoo3, by virtue of being such a fucking trooper (WickedGL RULED!!!).

Actually, I'm starting to get warm fuzzies for the x800xl that I just bought to tide me over until the next gen stuff hits (My 6800ultra "Golden Sample" died last week :( ), it's a serious amount of card for the money.

Am I imagining it, or did high end cards used to cost way less?

Another vote for the voodoo3, I could hardly believe my eyes when I got that bad boy. I was a Starcaft addict with it for years. The Ti 4200 I had is right up there with it though, I was amazed when I got it. I had just started getting into OCing, and the lengths I was able to push that thing were insane. Still a great card to this day.

I am loving my new setup, SLI is showing great promise, but I wouldn't put it above the voodoo3 or Ti 4200.

Believe it or not, the only card I ever had that caused me no trouble what-so-ever was my BFG 5800 Ultra. I had teething problems with my Geforce 3, Geforce 5900 Ultra, and my current 6800 Ultra.

So the best card I ever bought in terms of just working great out of the box was the 5800 Ultra!!

Another vote for the Radeon 9700 Pro. Despite its age, it's still a decent card for today's games. Still in use in my secondary PC.

Nvidia TNT2 Ultra, I bought it back when it was the fastest you could get for $220-230. It ran at 185/200 all day long. I had that running with my Celeron 433@590, that was a badass system back when a katmai p3 500 was the fastest out.

12mb voodoo 2, quake 2 was banging on that. i always wanted to get a second card and run sli, but never had the money. :(

The best card that I've owned so far is my Gainward Ti4200. I overclocked it the first day I bought it to 320/600, and it's been that way ever since without any problems. It still delivers decent gaming performance in Dx8 games (about the same as a 9600XT), and was only $200! *sigh* Remember the days when mid-range video cards were architecturally the same as the high-end models, and all you had to do was o/c the difference? I miss those uncomplicated days, when you didn't have to gamble with unlocking shaders and whatnot.

6800 GT. Had it a year and its not showing any signs of age.
yeah theres faster stuff out there, but I can run good high widescreen rez with eye candy on.

My geforce 3 only lasted a year :( and it felt so slow.

I have an X800XT-PE AGP, an X850XT PCI-e, and a 6800Ultra AGP on the way.....

:)

My current one, BFG Geforce 6800GT OC.

So much faster than my old one....
9500pro: 275mhz core, 540mhz memory, 128mb vram, 128bit memory bus, 8 pixel pipelines, SM2.0.
6800GT: 410mhz core, 1100mhz memory, 256mb vram, 256bit memory, 16 pixel pipelines, 6 vertex shaders, SM3.0.

My Diamond Viper 770Ultra (TNT2 Ultra) ooOOoooooo Paid 350.00

or my Geforce 6800Ultra :D

This x900xt pe is at least double the performance of my old x800xt pe...32 pipe wet dream ;) :D ;)

No seriously, my vote goes to Rage Fury MAXX, got one when my Voodoo 3 3500 died, jumping from 16Mb to 64Mb (think it was first 64Mb card). Playing ut99 at stupid res, full everything 32bit colour and insane fps, now that was an upgrade! Didn't have any driver probs or any other probs ppl had either, bar the problems they had running it with win2k. Still got it somewhere lol My ti4200 was a lot better but the difference between the V3 3500 and the MAXX was insane.

Now only if they could pull another top end MAXX out, that would be seriously cool :)

STB Black Magic Voodoo2 12MB, bar none

TFC flew with that upgrade (from a Riva128ZX) and looked much better doing it.

Canopus Pure3d 6mb voodoo card.

Quake 2 never kicked so much ass. (espically when my friends with diamond monster 3d 4mb voodoos came over) :p

My best setup relative to the time was:

AGP: Some Matrox Card
PCI: Voodoo 2 12 Mb
PCI: Voodoo 2 12 Mb

That was pretty rocking for the time.

My current card: BBA Radeon 9500 Pro

Bought it for $112 (through questionable purchase w/Best Buy employee discount + MIR) a long time ago. I don't even remember when I bought it. At least 2 years ago.
Still runs HL2 and Far Cry nicely and Doom3 slightly less nicely.
Its coming to the end of its life though, it's time to buy either x800XL or R5xx and put the 9500 Pro into the HTPC (When I get it fixed)

Those that are voting for the 4200 have valid points though. I never owned one, I held onto 8500 until 9500 Pro.

Trying not to get too OT......
I think there are a few factors here:
1. It's well known that the x800XL is a fantastic price/performance card
2. Hardware is pretty far ahead of software, IMO
3. There are now more cards that fit more markets within video card lines. Example: R200 had 2 versions, regular 8500 and 8500 LE (not counting the 128MB too little too late model)
When R300 came out, there was the 9700 Pro, 9700, 9500 Pro, 9500, and I think some other SE versions or something. In other words, in order to buy a high end card, you used to have to buy the single high end offering from that line. Now, you have all these mid-high end cards that fill in the gaps.

My X800XT was the best thing that ever happened to me.
Jumping from a 9200 128mb to this was quite the dream.

My GF 1 DDR lasted 35 months before I upgraded due to UT2003.
I doubt I'll ever get that kind of mileage from a card again.

Diamond Viper V550. That + 300a @ 504mhz = ownage back in the day. The only time I had a "high end" gaming rig.

GFX5200 ;)

Actually I don't know there are cards that were the biggest improvenment, cards that lasted the longest, cards that made friends nut themselves..........

ATi Radeon 9600XT

When I finally got away from my P4 1.6 and SD RAM computer and used this with no bottleneck, I finally found out how nice of a card it really was when unbounded. Play D3 very well at 800 by 600 high quality.

hm.... I would have to say... i dunno... i dont upgrade very often so when i do its a big deal...

I went from a Matrix Millenium2 to a Viper770pro (tnt2 i think... been so long..) when that was top of the line. I used that card forever, loved it. I went from that card to a 7500 mobile, which was NUTS faster (700mhzk6 to 1.6ghz p4, world of difference)

But the biggest noticeable jump would have to be from a 9000pro i got for free (diode was torn off, i lectric taped it back on carefully and used it for 6 months after that) to a BFg 6800gt oc. Made a deal with parents to pay for half of the 6800gt to as i was afraid the 9000pro would crap out on me when i needed it for classes (csci major) so only cost me 200 bucks well over 6 months ago i think. mmmm. I liked the latest upgrade the most i think... :)

3dmark 2001SE
9000pro: 6043
bfg 6800gt oc: 21554

3dmark 2003
9000pro: 1037
bfg 6800gt: 12336

3dmark 2005
bfg 6800gt: 5097

X800Xl although it does seem to underperform a bit...
I can't break 5k in 05 or 10k in 03...
