A friend asked me to help him buy one online but I have no idea about cameras. He said he's looking for a Nikon D3 or D300.

I was nitpicking a little about the D300 and the D3 being "old". The slightly newer models from Nikon are D300s and D3s/D3x respectively. Each model has its own strengths and weaknesses, not to mention the price:
D300s - $1500
D3s - $5200
D3x - $7600

The D3 vs D300 is kinda silly. They are very different cameras. From best to worst for $1k plus cameras would be:

D3s (FX or full frame)
D700 (FX or full frame)
D300s (DX or Crop Sensor)
D7000 (DX or Crop Sensor)

Although which of the last 2 is better is up for debate depending on usage.

Both cameras are discontinued and cannot be bough new anymore. Maybe Amazon or ebay has some backstock, but that's about all I can think of. Try KEH for used market items.

For new cameras, I can suggest http://www.bhphotovideo.com and http://www.adorama.com/

Second this.

These are the only two sites that both offer you decent prices, and won't rip you off.

No matter what you do, don't order anything from Abes of Maine.

Let's just say, there's no Abe, and they're not in Maine. They were kicked out of Maine by the attorney general for their business practices...
