I liked both Unreal and Quake. I preferred Quake, but I enjoyed Unreal. Lots of 1 hit deaths in Unreal though.

I never really played the MoH series, but MoHAA is one of those games that has it's own legacy. Even if I don't really know that much about it, I can certainly respect this as a great choice because of the fanfare I've heard from many people who did play it.

For me it was Ghost Recon Wildlands :) The co-op play definitely makes it worth it!

Probably the best when it comes to the amount of fun I had was Unreal Tournament.
The best all time is hands down, Deux Ex.

Multiplayer - Unreal Tournament / UT 2k3 (the mod community rocked this). Quake 3 would be second.

Single player - Doom. Castle Wolfenstein got things started but Doom got the whole genre rolling.

Now, I would not play the original Doom again but would go play some UT in multiplayer.

Fear didn't introduce that mechanic. Max Payne 1 did :).

I'm sad it took 3 pages for Tribes to show up. This game ate SOOOO many of my nights... and days... and... yeah....

Shifter and Renegade mods for me! (I was even on the Tribes Usenet Group 1000 years ago)

Have not played 2k3 since it came out. What is better about than 2k4?

Quake III Arena for multi. I think it was the Excessive Overkill mod that was the one to have? Super fast machine gun and snipping. Rapid fire Rail Gun etc...
Original Tribes, Vanilla, without mods. UT2K4.

Single Player... probably Quake II. Although I really enjoyed Quake I with the Navy Seals mod (the precursor to CounterStrike).
Half-Life 1 I enjoyed. Far more than the 'often lauded' HL2.

I am a super fan of the mostly unknown game "Shogo" which was made by Monolith. Mostly because it had the most fun weapons I think I've ever used in a single player game. And the music I think is also probably the best that I've ever heard in a high-action type game. I know there are other games with dynamic soundtracks out there, but still to this day, I don't think a dynamic soundtrack was ever done as well as in Shogo. Caveat of course being you actually have to appreciate electronica.

I played far too many hours of Rise of the Triad and Duke Nukem 3D.
Not sure what else I got super into after that. I'm assuming we're talking pure FPS and not anything with RPG elements.
Fear was okay... hrmm what else was I playing back when I was really playing FPS'? Nothing else really stands out.

Well, the thread title says "...shooter game..." which is why I included some that aren't pure FPSes or even first person period. (I was kind of being a smart-ass with the 2D side-scrollers, but technically those are shooter games too.)

Well if we're doing that then I'd probably rate ME 1,2,3 very highly. I really enjoyed the entire series. Even though I know there was a lot of hate for 3.

I enjoyed Raptor a lot which is a SHMUP.

Raptor was really fun actually, and one of the earliest PC games to fill in that Raiden ground that was pretty much missing back then.

Love the Mass Effect games too.

I didn't mention it before because it sounded like lists weren't allowed, but whatever. I got nearly 500 hours (well, about 350 then, and more later,) out of Borderlands playing 4 player co-op with my friends. It was funny. Right when we started playing it all four of us were between jobs. We'd play it until around 5 in the morning. (was just like the good old days) I don't think I've put that much time into a game since, but then, I haven't been between jobs since then either. :D I played BL2 with my daughters a lot which was fun too, but not quite 500 hours. :D

The first video game I ever played was a FPS. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on the N64. I was totally taken with the whole thing.

There were other shooters I played after that were better, but none captured me like Turok, it was all such a brand new experience!

Goldeneye of course was excellent. It might have been the first FPS that had missions in each level to be completed.

Then I got a PC and thought Unreal Tournament was great. Liked it much more than Quake III Arena. UT was my first multi player experience.

Jedi Knight : Jedi Outcast was a favorite. Best Star Wars game I ever played.

The very first Call of Duty was pretty good. It took the WW2 FPS crown away from Medal of Honor. I liked the first MoH and MoH : Underground on Playstation a lot.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault is the game that made me switch over from being a console only gamer to PC primarily gamer and consoles as secondary to this very day.

I've never spent more time online with a game to this day like I did cutting my teeth on that.

The original Far Cry for me as well. At the time it looked amazing, had a good story, and was a blast to play. The setting was awesome

    Serious Sam: The Second Encounter

Scratch that itch for unmitigated frantic FPS action.

Been playing it again on my retro Win98//3dfx gaming box.

Its a three way tie for me, the original Deus Ex, original Far Cry, original Half Life for SP. Far cry still looks pretty good, amazing for such an old game!

While this isn't my absolute favorite, it did completely change the way games were played. I absolutely couldn't believe what I was seeing when I first played this. I had played some other games like Wing commander that looked 3Dish, and some dungeon crawlers that moved a block at a time, or smooth moving flat-shaded vector games on the Amiga, but this blew them all away.

I was at school, and my friend handed me a single 3.5" floppy disk, and told me it was from another kid (who to this point I had no idea was into games at all.) I asked what it was. He said Wolfenstein, with no other hints as to what I was going to see. I almost shrugged it off, and left the disk in class, because I still had nightmares of playing (or TRYING to play) the original Castle Wolfentstein game on my C64. I mean, it was a decent game, but if you got caught, it took another two to three minutes to load and put you back at the beginning. Never did get too far into it because I couldn't stand those load times. That was with a 1541 and FastLoad cart too.

Anyway, I took this home, popped it in, copied or installed it to the HDD, and started playing. Was absolutely blown away, and pretty much ignored everything else in my existence until I finished all 6 missions, and possibly even a second time. :D

Good stuff. Still play it now and then too. Oh, and the music, in all its phase modulated Adlib/Soundbaster glory was SO GOOD. I still find myself whistling or humming a lot of it.

I like Q3A better, but I spent a TON of time in UT. Way more than any subsequent UT sequel.

I tried getting into Q3A but after UT (and previous Quakes) it felt way too cartoony.

Hehehe, I thought exactly the opposite. UT was more cartoony to me. :D I think we watch different cartoons.

Same with me. Never could get into Q3, but damn did I play a lot of UT'99 and Q2 online. Matter of fact, I still play UT'99 online occasionally. Q2, lacking an embedded browser, is harder to find decent populated servers.

I can't just pick one, as I have several I play at least once a year.

Wolfenstein 3D: I played this so much as a kid, being amazed at first at the fast gameplay and enoyed the challenge of the higher difficulties. To beat the game on "I am death incarnate" was my ultimate goal which I completed. I love Wolf 3D probably the most on the list, next to HL2. I made a map of the first level in HL2, and want to make a full on mod, I just procrastinate too much. It's called "Halfenstein" on Moddb if you're interested.

Half-Life 1 & 2: I got introduced to HL1 in school, our computer teacher would let us play multiplayer after our assignments. I bought it as soon as I saved up enough money and played every chance I got. I used to think i was cool and original playing as "Death" on the mp.
Then HL2 came out. I bought it day one and oh man was I amazed! From the monologue the G-Man had at the beginning, to the airboat, to the citadel, this game blew me away. I can't tell you how much I've loved this game, other than I still play it a lot. If HL3 comes out, it'll be a day one buy. I'm still waiting, and still have hope, I just don't get hyped every year anymore.

F.E.A.R.: just a fun game to play, with one of the best illusions of AI.

Quake II: it's Quake II, and it's what got me into modding.
