I need something that block annoying pop-ups, but not essential ones on certain legit websites. a "smart" blocker so to speak. But it has to block ALL porn pop-ups. I cant stand that shit...

Is there one?
I use panicware pop-up stopper, but it can get unstable sometimes and lose the system tray icon. It stays on, but then theres no control over it and I cant open 2 explorers at once.

Misses porn sometimes too... (a sheeps cock is the last thing I want to see while searching for atari roms. great...)

I understand, for IE, Google Toolbar does a pretty good job. Firebird also has the functionality of the Google Toolbar built in if you're interested in some alternative browser action.

The GoogleToolbar works great, and allegedly, SP2 for XP will give IE tabbed browsing, which are the 2 reasons why people use Firebird.

If you use IE, you really must have Google Toolbar installed. It works seamlessly. The search feature is great too.

This seemingly comes bundled with the Opera browser, I just think things run much more smoothly in this browser :)

To each their own however! :D

Proxomitron - By far the best popup blocker, it does so much more though, for ultimate contronl. If you want to just block popups i would go for the google tool bar like everyone else has suggested.

That still leaves you with IE. Which is third only to OE and Windows itself as an exploit delivery mechanism.

Get a different browser would be my recommendation. There have been enough links in this thread that I feel comfortable not linking to the one I use.

I have this. It does not work. It seems that I have to know some programming language to setup my options... (WTF?)
I see its 'ON' but it does nothing? Blocks nothing, does nothing. I dont get it....

Did you read the instructions? You have to set your browsers connection to go through localhost on port 8080. Then it works.

Yeah just set your browser to think Prxomitron is the poxy and the program locally filters everything, there is also no need for a programming language. Elaborate please.

I dont have time to read instructions to set this up when i have 10 pages of stupid homework. of course i setup the ports, the program just refuses to do anything. even options in the config wont work. (no textures on menus.... i still see textures.. what the hell??)

btw google toolbar sucks, Im staring at the popup block thing which says 0 blocked. (i can see that...) its not blocking anything, wtf?

jamezzz122, its not spyware popups, its regular popups that the popup stopper lets go through the filter for some reason. only happens on CERTAIN websites... (snes roms, and such...)

oh well, im gonna wait till the weekend to try to fix anything on this computer, i have WAY too much homework to be wasting time with this dookie....

You're the first person who I've heard complain about Google toolbar. What browser are you running it on? I have it on IE6, and in the 3 months that I've used it, it's blocked over 860 pop-ups.

if it was working i wouldnt complain about it, but it doesnt matter really, I got proximitron working.
In theory its the best thing out there, but of course it wasnt working. Now i got it going, and I can say for sure that proximitron blows everything out of the water, even goggle bar.
theres so many options, ah yes, its like surfing the net in 93' again.

gg

I hate Internet Explorer.

Its like trying to protect yourself in a hot zone with Charlie all around you and your in the middle of a room with 6 open doors and 10 windows.

The best move you can make if you want to get rid of popups and re-establish your internet secuirty is to download a new browser like Firebird or Opera. Those two by far are better then IE6 in every way.

I havn't had any problems with those annoying ActiveX controls or stupid spyware that was constantly loading itself onto my computer when i used IE6 regularly.

Not sure why you had problems using Google Toolbar - it works fine for everyone I know. If you're getting random pop-ups while browsing, it could also be that you have some spyware/trojans on your system.

I'm guessing from your difficulty in configuring Google Toolbar that you're not a computer wiz (no offense intended), so here are some free tools that should detect and clean up any spyware on your system:

Spybot Search & Destroy:
http://security.kolla.de/

Ad-Aware 6:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

I would download and install both of these tools and run a full scan of your system. They'll probably go a long way in preventing pop-ups in the future, and will make your system more secure. Be sure to download the latest updates for both tools after you've installed them as well. Good luck!

whered that come from?
I never said i was getting RANDOM popups. (obvious spybot or virus...)

anyway, it doesnt matter, i got proximitron working and that blows google out of the water.

(btw, ive have ad-aware since the first one. duh i know about spybots and viruses.)

google didnt work, granted i didnt go porn surfing to test it, but its fine cause i dont like anything under the address bar. (apparently google allows popup LINKS. thats what i was doing to 'test' it, since my last popup blocker didnt allow those.)

your last post was offense, but thats ok, i never really gave you all the details so i kinda did make myself look n00bish. no offense taken. :p
