I have a Q6600 on a P35 Mobo with a Corsair 620HX. I am giving my 8800GTX to my brother so he can SLI and I need to find something that will game at around the same speeds. Im split between a 280GTX (a little more than I want to pay) or a 4870

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

What resolution are you playing at.
There's a rumored refresh of the GTX-280 that will be 55mm.
At the moment you will probably find the best deal at the GTX260 level. The new '216' versions are out and will probably drive the prices of the 'old' stock.

Get the 260 is my advice.

Find an "old" GTX 260 in the 200-250 range. You'll be very happy I'd bet.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I game at 1920 res on a 28" Hanns G and mainly FPS games.

I would like to get a 280 just cause I hear that it will have a longer lifespan but the 4870 seems to be a popular choice. Is there any particular brand that has a better (quieter too) cooler than the others?

what's the comparison with the ati 4870 vs the 260?

depends on who you ask. H listed the cards as evenly match while other show the GTX260 losing when you turn up the eye candy (AA).

I will admit I have a 28" hannspree and I am pretty happy with my GTX280

Just curious, any micro stuttering issues with the 4870x2 at all?

Go for 4870 rather than 260, as some reviews point out that 4870 will beat 260 at that res with AA/AF on.

Or just get a 280 and you'll kick ass.
