This is probably the best for under $1300, ASUS G73JH-BST7
The 5870m > GTX460m about 5-10% depending on the game, but also consider that GTX460m bearly has one or two driver releases, and then Nvidia focus on rushing the desktop GTX580, i expect the GTX460m to catch up as drivers mature for it, either way its more a personal preference, the difference is fairly small. Nvidia also has 2 good things on this gen, it idles very low, 35-45c depending on ambient temp, atm idling at 40C, while ATI has very high clocks in 2d, thus having 60C idle isnt uncomon, not a big deal but i like my hardware as cold as i can if im not using it, another is that in the G73JW the GTX460m max temps are in the 70s, 5 hours of playing sc2 (not that stresfull) didnt break 68C, while ATI 5870 is comon to be in high 80s with some in 90s. But the 5870 atm is faster in most games than GTX460m. The temps on the G53JW are a little higher due to smaller chasis, still very well for performance you get. I strongly suggest to spend the extra $8 (or $28 if you upgrade the HDD) and go for the G53JW-A3.how does the 460m compare to the 5870 in a laptop?
I woudlnt dish this res, still fairly good for 17'' display, specially considering that the 5870m is very close to a 5770 in performance, so aiming to play at 1080p, it might struggle in some high demanding games, while 1600x900 will give you better framerate and allow you to max out more the games, either way its a good choice, but if you brother wants 1080p then go for the G53JW.was looking at that as well but the only thing thats stopping my brother buying it is its max res of 1600x900.

With in your $1300 budget no, but to throw some options as close as i seen, ASUS G73JW-XA1 $1449 and Asus G73JW-XR1 $1449hey thanks for the reply. do u know of any laptop with near specs that has a 17 inch screen that does 1080p?
below $1300 i would go for MSI GX640-260 $1093, slightly over i would go ASUS G53JW-A3 $1308 (i would probably ugprade the hdd to 500gb 7200epm for $20).
