Best final fantasy game

Its good because kefka tries to destroy the world... and succeeds. Plus the extra characters dont really tie into the story.. i mean cmon.. crazed useless boy naed gau? he was only there to help out the party for one sequence.

The post-apocalyptic thing was cool and Kefka was a fun villain, I just think the extra characters diluted the story.

Ah right, forgot about FF3 and the jobs. I have the rom, just have never played it. I forgot about the casting delay in 4 but that is an excellent point, because it forces you to consider which spell to use: Meteo takes forever, is it really worth casting when you could cast Fire 3 twice in that time? (Or however long it was, I haven't played that game in forever. I want to pick up the gba version, though I imagine they took out the porno mag :D ).

Actually, on FFIV Advance, they kept the secret developer room, porno mag and all.

Would anyone like to elaborate on why VIII was bad? I've never met anyone who didn't love it.

I don't know, I just couldn't get into it. The battle system felt cumbersome because of the whole draining magic thing, I thought that was a poor design because it slowed things down.

Really? Id say it's the complete opposite. There are very few people I've ever asked about this that wouldn't say FFVIII was a bad game. Personally, I don't think it's bad, but it would be worst in the series. Worst in the FF Series is still better than a lot of games though.

My favourite would definitely be FFX closely followed by FF3/6. I loved the stories in these 2 games. I bought a PS2 just for FFX. FFX-2...well that was fun, but the 100% completion thing was ridculous. Way too much obscure stuff you need to do just to get 100% completion and the real ending.

Sweet! Do you know what Cecil says after you use it? I played FF4J on a fan-translated rom and he says "I...I'll go blind!" I wonder how accurate that translation is...

CT to me is one of my fav high super greatestest RPG ever other than FF3(6JP)

First thing that comes to mind is the 5 minute sequences to cast a spell

Xenogears FTW!!!!!

(NOT Xenosaga, but Xenogears)

oooof, that game was painful. Lucid plot, plot twists every 20 minutes and more reading than actual playing. Not to mention that the twisty plot was totally fucked.

fun fact: you can beat ff8 without gaining any levels

How exactly does one do this?

(Not that I'm going to break out the game or anything, ... just curious)

repost w/ poll!!!1 ;)

<3 FF3j and FFT. And FF1. And FFX was the first I played, so that get's some props too. FF3 is the best though, the models are so awesome!

To the guy that's done it w/ every combo besides 4 WM, 4 thieves is immensely harder. Also, do it without class changing. And do it with only 1 character. 1 Thief no class change = hardest possible combination imho. I am level 27 and can't beat Astos! Stupid theif does 1-2 damage after slowga and gets insta-killed. At least I have 30000 gold.

Maybe this is bordering on unhealthy obsession....

Or it's damn cool. I really don't know which.

lol, it was a joke, and they were talking about a classic like king kong, not a turd like FFVIII. honestly, you could tell me the entire story of 8, and i wouldn't get pissed. i'd actually prefer that to playing the game the whole way through.

Ok, I'll be the first to say this one.

My favorite is FF1, because it was the first time that I realized what a game can be, not to mention the music was AMAZING. Oh and you grow up in the middle of the game. Tell me of any game from that era that did something like that.
sweet christ, how did i forget the first one? i got out my NES a couple of years ago just to play it. damn near spent as much time trying to get it working as i did getting to the first boss. the first time you become a warrior, ninja, etc...few gaming moments beat that.

i've always hated that part of the newer final fantasy games. ok square, i get it, you can make shit sparkly, shiny, or transparent. let me fucking kill something. the worst examples of this are the last fight against sephiroth in 7 (i literally made myself a sandwich when he cast supernova, and right after i took my turn, he cast it again) and killing all your aeons in 10 (i can't skip those stupid summons, and i get punished for finding all of the aeons by having to take an extra 5 minutes to kill them?).

well as a correction you can get into gaus back story....

FF6 FTW. favorite game, played it meticulously on the SNES :p

FF7 comes in second for me.

Ive played every final fantasy from 2 through 11 including X and X2... so it was a semi hard decision :p

Question for this thread:

Thinking about buying FFXI (or which ever is online)

What's the penalty for dying?
just back in town and gotta foot it again or do you lose lots of money/ex?

you'll lost exp I think its been so long..

You are upto sitting there and grinding over and over correct?

FF 1, 7, 8, 9. and 10 are the only ones I really cared for. I have played through all of them sans 11. I don't really count 11 as an actual game since it has no ending. Although the series is very good I have always had more fun with the Dragon Warrior/Quest series of games.

Anyone else hyped about Final Fantasy XII? Its looking to be such an awsome game. All the story hints sound sooo great, I love how they are keeping it so secretive. The battle system went through an overhaul and is so nice, the graphics are more realistic in the art sense and its from the Final Fantasy Tactics team so you know its going to be a serious game.

As far as gameplay and over all quality is concerned, I think FFVIj is the best of the series. FFIVj Hard Type is close, and FFV isn't bad either. FFI and FFIIj are classics of course, but a little rudimentary compared to the others. Not to mention how hard it is to build levels in the original FF2j.

Though, I have to say for pure character development and emotionally involvement, I think FFVIII ties for first with FFVI. The battle system and part of the plotline may not have been exactly the best in the series, but the very Japanese love theme definately wins out. Not to mention that the SeeD Ball is, in my opinion, nearly on par with the Opera House of FFVI as far as a cinama is concerned.

 I think someone right here does not understand the deeper messeges...

Don't worry though, you are not alone.

FFXI - HOW CAN YOU PEOPLE PLAY THIS GAME!!?!?!?? Horrible!!! -147 out of 10

Why? Because it's a REAL MMORPG. There is no easy task, everything is a challenge. No click fest battle system here, this game takes real teamwork. This game takes real thought into what kind of avatar you are going to make, this game takes timing and skill. Not to mention, this game actually has the RPG part down, there are loads of quest with a lot of story attached to them. Like I said, this game is not for the WOW crowd, if you think Wow is one bit challenging, then this game is far too much for you.

FFXI was ok.. but Good lord, it was the GRIND OF ALL GRINDS!

It's only a grind if you make it one. There is absolutely no one forcing you to rush to the end-game. I've been playing since the NA release (around 3 years), I have never felt the need to hit the max level, in fact, I still haven't and I don't plan to. With so much other then leveling to do, so many areas to explore, so many crafting recipes to discover, so many new job combinations to try, argh... There is too much sometimes.

Final Fantasy 3 was possibily the greatest game of all time.

1) FF3 (6)
2) FFX
3) FF2 (4)

I played them all up until 9. I liked 9, it didn't make me stop, I just got out of consoles and never bought into the new ones released on the PC.

FF3/6j was probably my favorite in the numbered series, with FF2/4j and FF7 closely behind. I did like them all a great deal though, including 8 (which I actually thought was pretty entertaining).

Best FF game ever would have to be Tactics in my opinion. Although, I sure wish they would have made another one (not on GBA) that didn't allow you to get so over powered.

It's not that I didn't understand it, it's that it wasn't a particularly fun game. The person combat system was pretty cool, but the game itself dragged. You would spend a whole ton of time reading, then go into a boss fight, lose, then have to re-start and read 20 minutes of text again. I didn't like fighting in the gears because of the whole fuel thing (an artifical mechanic meant to make the game harder, like how the comp in War 3 gets double resources to make it more challenging).

Besides, if you're looking for some sort of profound truth in a squaresoft rpg, you'll either be disapointed, or find something you can get anywhere else. I was an english major in college, and played it alongside a religious studies major (who's now at Harvard) and a philosophy major - we all thought the game was trite.

I've played ff2 and ff7, both great games, but Id say ff2 just cause it was my first and older. I played ff3 a little but lost my saved game, I should pickup the cartridge and play it next time I have loads of free time.

I've also played a ff2 emulator that is a direct translation and has all the features that are completely changed on the snes version. (tellah can remember random spells, cecil can do that wave attack at the beginning, they curse alot, etc.) I lost that save too around the ant lion area. I just dont have the time to play any rpgs now though.

VII and X were my favorites.

And yes, I played them all as they were released. FF1 was my first RPG as a kid.

I lean towards VII and X because the stories for me were just great.

7 is definetly the best in my opinion, while some of the others had a bit better gameplay, the story in 7 is probably the best of any game I've ever played, Cloud's awesome swords, and Sehpiroth's unparalleled amounts of badass make it an amazing game. and the matter system was way better than any of the others.

Well, I'm currently majoring in english along side religious studies (no Harvard however...).

I wasn't looking for any profound truth, I played this when I was really young and I found the overall messeges very compelling. This was one of the things that sparked my interest in religion actually.

As for you gripe about the gameplay. I love to read, I found myself absolutely immersed in the dialogue at all times. The gameplay on the other hand was boring, endless random encounters along with a battle system that offer little to no challenge (except a few choice GEAR battles).

Back to the topic at hand... FF is a solid series (not the best, but certainly not the worse).

FF3 (6) and 7 were my favorites. IMO 8 was terrible and I got bored/lost interest 2/3 through 9.

I think that of the later generations 9 and X are my faves. Have not played 8, and haven't played much of 7. I'm going to take the emulator advice from earlier and see how it looks.

Then I prefer 6, and 4. Haven't played much of 5 or the real 2 and 3. 1 holds a special place in my heart, but of course the basicness of it all precludes replayability at this point. Mystic Quest is definitely at the bottom there too.

So: X, 9, 6, 4, 1. Can't judge 7 or 5 because I've only been about an hour into them.

I loved 9 though, loved it. It was my first Final Fantasy since 6 on the Snes.

FF7 for me. i still gets pissed when I think about the death of that certain someone :)

Don't play 11. They aren't kidding about the grind. You start the game with nothing but an auto-attack, a skill that recharges every 2 HOURS. 2 hours later into the game, you get a new skill that is usable once in ~5 minutes. Starting to get the gist? The world is huge, and you walk at a snail's pace. And yes, dying will take away XP. Equipment requires tons and tons of grinding to pay for. Starting to see a trend?

This is a game made by people that hate you. This game should start you at level 30 where you have something to do in a fight, but for the first couple dozen hours, you're mostly standing by watching. They slow the game down for no reason other than to waste your time. If they had taken this game and just changed the numbers for speeds to scales comparable to other MMOs, it'd be tolerable. The party-chain attacks are interesting. But it takes too damn long. Other aspects of this game aren't bad at all. It's got nice art with fun and consistent themes. A large world to explore with a story behind it. This could be a decent game but it's sabotaged by timesinks.

And incidentally, FF6 was my favorite.

What's the monthly fee on FF11 anyway? Any kind of demo out there you can check out?

ive only played FF8 and FFX, I liked FFX more because it had a really good storyline (i almost cried at the end). FF8 was a while ago, but I remember really really enjoying it and it's story. The first times i used the beast summons (the things that took like 5 minutes) i thought it was the sweetest thing ever. Like ifrit doing his hellfire rock pounding deal, and some other thing (like venus or prometheus or something) did his little artillery strike from miles away. It was really sweet.
