Actually, I have heard that the newest ones aren't always the best because sometimes they are buggy and have / cause issues.

7900GS should work with 169.21's as well as My 7950GT - they also work well with my 8800GT, but the 7950 doesn't have any issues with many games, and many older games too EG Deus-Ex, COD1, CoDUO, Painkiller, Far Cry, HL2 through EP2 etc...
