Looking for an adblocker app for android chrome. Nothing too complicated, friend is getting tired of "depressing ads" after reading sad news stories. I haven't used android myself in years.

Adblock Plus seems to only be its own browser now on mobile?

TIA

Or use a VPN solution like AdGuard. They have been effectively blocking ads for the past two years on my Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome for Windows; and Android Chrome and Firefox. They also provide 24/7 telephone support.

Yeah, I definately want something simple to use and install. This person is not very computer/tech literate so I'm not wanting to set up a vpn. AdGuard looks good though otherwise. I may suggest trying using Brave or Firefox (w/UblockOrigin).

i agree with supersnake, started using adguard when it was suggested in another thread with the same question(can't remember who, maybe it was supersnake that suggested it, lol) but works like a charm and super simple to setup.

I just use brave browser. Works great. I know it’s not chrome, but it is free and effective.

Found Brave earlier this year, and it's a keeper. No ads ever. No VPN or AdBlocker needed.

I do prefer Samsung browser best, but that one absolutely needs a good blocker installed.

So Brave it is.

Yes, that was me.

I'll never understand the need to block ads. They support whatever content you're consuming. I guess I'm a butthead for even asking folks to be reasonable.

They're obnoxious on phones. They can also be attack vectors on desktop and mobile.

This is a non-response. If you're worried about them being attack vectors, use a malicious DNS filter like Quad9, OpenDNS, etc. They will filter out the vast majority of malicious domains. Beyond that? Don't go to donkey porn sites in the Ukraine and you'll be fine.

Serious?

Ads on websites are annoying as heck, and make browsing most typical websites a huge pain with all the pop ups and ads before the actual article you want to read.

Ads are horrific and just nightmarish on smartphones. Thank God for Root and AdAway and VPNs, never see ads ever again.

Yes, I am serious.

I've been on computers since the 286 and BBS era. I've seen all forms of the web to right where we are now. The only sites that have really annoying ads are terrible click bait sights that you shouldn't be visting anyway.

Go to a decent site like hardforum and the ads are barely visible.

If you want content, the author should be compensated for their work.

If you can't be bothered, stop stealing content Sparky.

This. I left hardocp whitelisted because their ads were not obtrusive, and were curated. Most sites have very intrusive ads though. And no, to the guy talking about ukranian donkey porn, I don't browse that kind of thing. One time I had an alert on Hotmail on my inbox page from a bad ad.

However, on mobile ads leech data pools and are full screen, autoplaying videos etc. On desktop I have had bad ads try to infect in the past, so I leave my blocker on for most sites. It sucks because it does dump a major source of a site's income which I sympathize with.

Obviously not. Your convenience is more important then their income.

If you don't like a site's ads, maybe you shouldn't go their anymore.

Instead of, you know, stealing content.

Some sites have anti adblock. If a site is concerned they can do that. You can't steal digital content that is offered for free.

Offered for free it's in natural form. When you take active steps to block portions of the page you are circumventing portions of the page the author wants to be there.

Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

LOL. This is hardly the crime of the century, and there's no stealing. If a content author wants ads to be unblocked, then curate the ads. I won't open myself up to viruses for free. H did that, though I think they were still heavily blocked :(. I didn't block them.

Yeah, good in theory, but not in practice. On low months, we had 55% of our readers ad blocking, on high months over 75%.

The reason I have adblock is because I don't have a fast internet. On top of that, I'm living on capped internet. Most ads gobble up more data (those extremely annoying gif/animated ads) than the actual content of the website.

So the content creator gets cheated on revenue because you have inadequate internet? Yet you still get what you want. You sound like a selfish child. Yours, like all the other excuses, don't justify your actions.

As said elsewhere in this thread before it was.. um.. derailed, I now swear by AdGuard. Dead simple and just works.

I use Vivaldi browser and ublock origin.
I moved everything from Firefox to Vivaldi about a year (two years?) ago when firefox updated and removed every feature I liked from it.

Blockada is still king.

Brave works for me, clean and adjustable.

Thanks guys was originally going to try Ghostery

Willing to try Vivaldi Browser as I have been weaning off Chrome and using firefox.

What's the main differences that made some use Blockada / Brave / Adguard. Are there huge differences? I am personally willing to pay for more privacy to the winner.

Thanks for taking the time!

Blockada (and DNS66 - available through f-droid) function as a VPN on your phone, this means that everything goes through the app, similar to if you were to run a pi-hole at home. You can choose multiple hostlists and different domain name servers, basically everything that you can do with your home network without having to root the device.

Every once in awhile (a few times a year) I have had to turn off the custom DNS feature then turn it back on, but other than that it works great. Blocks everything except for video ads in the youtube app and ads in Pandora, etc.
