I'm looking to get my father a real nice monitor for Christmas, he is a serious digital photographer, however, his monitor makes me weep. It's some 7 year old Dell 19" TN panel i believe.

For the amount of money he spends on cameras and lens (and photoshop) I really think he should have a nice display with great colors.

Obviously, gaming does not matter, just colors/contrast/etc.

I was thinking of the U2410. I know an IPS Panel is the best of both worlds, but if he just needs visual eye candy, and not gaming performance, maybe there is a better choice out there?

Apple Cinema displays, pre-glossy garbage, I seem to remember had pretty race reviews in the pro scene.

Look to Eizo and NEC's professional range as well.

The Dell is likely the most cost effective solution though.

No quality of display will make up for poor calibration, even high end ones aren't properly calibrated from the factory. I'd also look into the option of getting a color/display calibration system.

Hadn't looked at displays in several years... hit Eizo's site. This is pretty hot.

Comes with hood.
Temperature stabilization.
Built-in calibration sensors/tool!? very curious, still reading, that could be hot.

Seems Eizo is still on top of the pro stuff.

Damn, maybe I shouldn't have said 'best' then. In about the ~$500 range, I was looking. I guess they don't make a 24" Apple Cinema display anymore either.

So it looks like it's going to be the 24" Dell Ultrasharp, unless another suggestion comes up?

Not much else in the 24" range and at that price than the U2410. Maybe get a hardware calibrator too to make the most of it, although it does come factory calibrated to some degree.

You probably know already, but just be a little wary of tinting issues that many have reported on the model.

How sophisticated of a computer user is he? A wide-gamut monitor like the Dell 2408WFP can be great for photography, but only if proper color management procedure is followed.

The best monitor for photography and Photoshop is probably the IBM T221. But the current going price is still out of your range, and it requires special setup. There's a guy in Japan who sells them--you can PM me for more info.

The FW900 is great but it's not "set and forget" like an LCD. It requires periodic adjustment. And at this point, it's unlikely to last as long.

I recommend the Dell U2311h.

It is fairly inexpensive @ $319. Since X-Mas is fast approaching, Dell should be having sales on their site; I believe this monitor was on sale for Black Friday. It is a non-professional LCD monitor, but it does have an e-IPS panel which is way better than a TN panel. Additionally, this monitor comes pre-calibrated with pretty good out of the box colors.

Here's an in-depth review of the monitor:

Thanks for the response. I guess I should have specified that I myself own a U2311h. For some reason, I thought the U24xxx was a step above in terms of picture quality? I know they are different aspect ratios, but to cost $200-300 more, surely there has to be a difference in terms of color/picture quality? Obviously, more Pixel Density as well...

I recently bought some HP L2475W's and they are amazing for photoshop work! The newest model is a ZR4 or something like that, havent seen one yet, but seriously love this HP L2475w.
