Benefits of a 64bit operating sytem

So what exactly are the benefits from a gamers point of view of upgrading to Windows XP 64 or Vista. Do games perform better or is there some sort of magic fairy that gives out free sticks of ram or something? It seems to me that an operating sytem like vista would take up alot of system resources and cause your computer to run slow. I can stand the whole fisher price, pastel color windows. Is there really any benefit to a 64 bit os other than it being the "cool" thing to do?

In today's world of wanting everything instant, and applications that want more then 2GB of ram allocated at once, you need 64 bits. (You can make it work with AWE, but it's a pain)
