My father's monitor recently went boom and because he was monitorless I gave him my old Dell 2001FPW 20" Widescreen as a gift so he can continue to use his computer.

I was always planning on upgrading in the future but because of my situation I am now without a monitor and in need of an upgrade.

So here is my question. Is there any possibility of in the near future a 30" widescreen lcd with a built in scaler and other inputs being released? I am looking between the Dell 2707FPW and the 3007-HC at the moment. The 27 looks nice because of the built in scaler and additional inputs, while the 30 inch looks nice because of the extra screen estate for only a small price difference over the 2707.

What would you guys reccomend I do?

Someone from HP mentioned once in an interview that scalers weren't available for 30" displays so they deferred it to a future successor to their 3065. So there may be future 30" monitors with scaling, but I wouldn't count on it very immediately.

To me, scalers are useless. I'd never run my LCD at a non-native resolution. I'd rather use 1:1 aspect than look at the blurry mess that is non-native res.

The 30" is the obvious choice simply for the S-IPS panel.

There is also the issue with future HDCP support, the lack of inputs (For xbox 360, etc etc), and the resolution seems to be a bit big...

All in all is it justifiable over the difference from the 24"?

I can't say I've looked into all of those issues, but I've used the 3007 and I feel that the native resolution is perfect for its size, like nearly all LCD's. Also be aware that 1280x800 is a secondary native resolution on the 3007, though I don't imagine it looks pretty.

As new as it is, I'd be surprised if the 3007-HC didn't have HDCP support. As far as inputs go, there are converters for such things. There's no loss of video quality with a component to DVI converter. Monoprice.com usually has such things at very low prices.

I strongly recommend that, if possible, you go to a store that has the 3007 on display and use it for yourself. It is difficult to recommend that you spend $1000 on something that you've never tried. I had my doubts before I tried it, but you might feel that 24" is plenty big.

Since the OP was asking about other inputs, it definitely is important. Sure if you only use a PC and run at native res that's fine. But the only thing that can push that kind of resolution is a PC, if you want to hookup a HD DVD player or an x360 or a ps3, it's not going to work. The scaler chip allows the monitor to scale back to say, 1080p, and be usable, without it, it's simply a monitor that can handle nothing but PC input.

Good point. I'm used to watching DVD's on my PC through my internal DVD player. I can just maximize the window. If I was using the 3007 with an external DVD player, I'd have a problem. I imagine 480p would be awfully tiny on the 30" Dell's default res.

1080p wouldn't be nearly so bad. I could live with the black border, but it is true that you would only be using 3000 of your 4160 total pixels. That's actually a pretty big border. 720p would be fine at 1280x800. Only 80 pixels of border.
