    Polygon - 7.5/10
"I'd be broken out of it by another cheap shot of T&A. I would be wrecking a flock of angelic or demonic enemies, sliding in and out of witch time almost at will, and then the special weapon I had picked up became a literal stripper pole for Bayonetta to dance on, because ... well, because, I guess."

"I won't guess why the blatant over-sexualization is still there, often more intensely than before. But it causes an otherwise great game to require a much bigger mental compromise to enjoy."

Hahahahaha, If you are going to go read the review at Polygon from this SJW, male feminist lapdog at least turn on all your add blockers.

Polygon is a SJW whorehouse. They don't do reviews. They write shit to piss people off and make some point that doesn't need making.
You are only giving them more clicks by bringing them up here....

What is this craziness, cheeky stuff in a Bayonetta game?!? That seems like someone being pissed because a car game has too many cars in it.

The day of the review I actually commented on it and said "If you're going to be such a wuss about it then let somebody else review the game". Got banned. Totally worth it.

I agree that low brow content detracts from the gaming experience for the most part, and Bayonetta is not a game I would ever even remotely consider playing simply because I think it's trashy. Some people like that, I don't.

I don't think it's absurd that 1 out of 8 people are going to find it completely tasteless, but on the other hand, you don't go into a game like Bayonetta 2 thinking it's going to be puritanical, so I don't understand why they'd dock the game points specifically for the trashiness. That would be like Ebert reviewing a softcore porn and docking points from it because he thought the porn detracted from it's experience.

First time I ever visited Polygon was a couple months back. I noticed they were infringing on a trademark of mine so I had my lawyer send a nice letter to them.

Same here, if I had to review it I'd probably give it a similar score. It's just an opinion. If every person was completely without bias or preference or whatever... the world would be pretty boring.

It's cool to see WiiU getting a good "edgy" exclusive though. Will it help the system or not? I guess some people are butt hurt it's not on other systems.

Well technically Nintendo saved Bayonetta and was able to provide it a sequel. Sony nor Microsoft were interested.

So while Nintendo is suffering in the home console consumer base at least it funded a sequel.

Yep, it wouldn't exist without Nintendo. Kamiya said they pitched Bayonetta 2 to a bunch of publishers but none of them wanted to go for it.

There are basically two styles of review. (1) does it do a good job of what the reviewer thinks it is trying to do? And (2) does the reviewer like it. Both are perfectly valid and result in different scores.

As much as I agree with that, I dislike reviewer #2. Personal opinion should remain that and NOT affect the score of the game simply because you think its "distasteful". The game should be reviewed based on what its trying to accomplish. You can offer your opinion, but it shouldn't affect the score.

If a game is trying to accomplish annoying me, then I give it 10/10, but I can't always make that assumption, now can I? :p

    Sure you can! :)

Although maybe I should rephrase myself. If a game is able to deliver a decent story, have good graphics (as a secondary to story), and other elements added to it, than that should comprise the score.

I'm happy with an opinionated review style as long as the reviewer explains why they are docking or adding (I've seen it both ways) points to their score. These type of reviews are exceptionally helpful because they actually tell you if a person with the same sorts of feeling as you likes the game or not. If you don't like their reasoning then you can ignore their rating.

In this case Ben from Polygon is very well known for being a stickler for any game that showcases the female body in an over sexualized manner even if its absolutely the expense of humor and artist style (Bayonetta was designed by a woman by the way). He often docks games that don't reflect his personal opinions in that manner. But isn't that what all of these gaming sites do?

While I agree that discrediting a game based on that alone doesn't reflect the game mechanics or overall play value I think having an echo camber of reviewers is just .. well boring.

I don't agree with his summations and I think he treated it unfairly considering the source material is EXTREMELY tongue and cheek. Having a drone fire off a logical review of something that has now been proclaimed an art form robs it of all circles of critical review. Part of having something become an art form is to let in those even you harshly disagree with to criticize that art form.

His opinion on Bayonetta is very unlikely to stifle game sales so direct correlation isn't really going to be a way to counter the validity of such a review. The problem is with Metacritic. Now because of his lower than average score it'll be highlighted with the overwhelmingly positive reception. That in turn will make a publisher like Nintendo go "Oh well we don't want to segment the market , especially considering we have a struggling platform. So its unlikely we'll greenlight a game like that again if the critical review doesn't equal the score grade we wanted overall."

That kind impact does hurt such a game and its franchise potential. In this case I don't think there is ever going to be a Bayonetta 3. Bayonetta 2 BARELY got made. When you consider that then his critical review is really a small rock skipped across the pond to its effect.

So really its a non issue in the long run in this case.

Well if Ben hates the female body so much, maybe he should just go and eat a dick rather than waste bandwidth of the interwebs.

This review didn't segment the market. The market was already segmented and this review is evidence of that. A publisher has to be smart enough to know that if they are going to make a game like this there are some people who will enjoy the sexuality/violence/gore and others who will dislike the game for the same reason.

This one review won't segment the market which is what my point was. The market is only segmented between big budget and indie as of this time. It stands to reason there would be people who won't like the game for some or all of those reasons. Its just an opinion though even if you disagree with it.

TL;DR Ben certainly is an outlining opinion on this game which is being showered in praise and its in line with the kind of reviewing he's done in the past. Nothing new to see here.

I harbor no love of Patricia Hernandez and her living with a person who she did an article on is certainly a conflict of interest. I also noticed Kotaku did a bunch of "ninja" edits on her previous articles to show disclosure which is bullshit because she never did so on her own. Her open attack against the creator of "Cards against humanity" who someone falsely accused of rape and that him putting out a PR response was "admitting" guilt made me like her even less. She is probably my personally least favorite writer on Kotaku (and probably the gaming enthusiast press at large) thanks to articles like those and her recent whine about certain SSB 3DS character being too "cheap". I find most of her articles either boring or just looking for controversy for no reason other than clickbait.

Ben however giving money to Zoe Quinn is frankly his business. Although he should have been more open about it , as in disclosure with his articles writing about her and her game , I don't think his breach of ethics was as damning as Patricia's. Talking and communicating and even support people in the industry in that way is fine .. as long as you disclose it if you intend to write about that person.

Also its been well proven Zoe has been harassed. I don't like her from the stand point of a human being and I do feel she has gone to far with her responses at times but she's been doxxed about 4 times now and mostly recently on 8Chan. There is certainly an element out there that hates her plain and simple and wants her to suffer greatly. The problem is that not only is harassment bullshit no matter what the reason but it also gives her a greater platform of strength to stand on. The more people harass her the worse it makes the counter argument look frankly and the worse it appears to main stream media which has the power to do actual damage to our hobby thanks to its completely unethical and lazy reporting.

I have the same feelings for Anita. I don't agree with her tropes videos largely (some points are somewhat valid but most are entirely illogical nonsense) but the harassment she's faced is also very real and horrid. To dismiss it or proclaim its "made up" is also bullshit. People have called the SFPD and verified that she did contact them , with evidence , of death threats and has continued to do so each time. While the SFPD likely can't do shit about that (except for the recent mass shooting threat she received before going to speak at a Utah University) other than to tell her to tone down her presence but we know that won't happen. Boogie from Youtube has also had death threats on a daily basis which led him to backing out of the situation almost entirely. So the harassment isn't some kind of "conspiracy" its actually happening and its disgusting.

Regardless even if Ben is a hardcore feminist the entire gaming community at large disagree's with him from the stand point of his score so I don't really think its a big deal at all. This is just how he is. It isn't doing him any favors that's for sure. His polarizing attitude often gets him in the hot seat and many don't even bother to go to Polygon anymore because of him.

All this "gotcha" terminology like SJW and anti this and anti that and my least favorite "Based Mom.." don't really do anything but apply direct labeling and end up resulting in discourse instead valid critical counter pointing. I disagree with both sides of this Hashtag war and feel its just being fed by people looking to scream as loud as possible with very little reasoning. There are scary elements from both sides latching on and using it to push a very old political agenda that has very little to do with video gaming. So in the context of this information I think we should focus on Ben's actual review and not the shit show that Twitter is currently doing nothing about (must have something to do with the thousands of new Twitter accounts since GG started and all that tasty ad revenue).

I know here on this forum lots of people find it to be a pretty cut and clear situation but its actually a fair amount more complicated then it seems. I've just been watching this unfold and trying to remain neutral to whats been happening so this reflects my personal opinion. I don't really "support" anyone in this situation either just because I've posted my thoughts on it.

Some people get offended when the stripper they payed actually delivers their lapdance. Polygon's writer is essentially taking the place of that guy.

All professional gaming reviews and reviewers suck. We know this. The best reviews come from sites like this discussing the game - we know this as well. What I don't understand is why people keep going back for more of these shit reviews and then getting surprised

I own the first game on xbox 360, and I'll admit to having a great deal of fun with the game (more than most) The combat was fun, and the controls were so tight. The hyper sexualization was there, and everyone's first reaction is "really? lol" - but it's well done, it's supposed to be that way, it doesn't take itself seriously, and somehow manages to pull it off. That's art in my book. Taking something that should be stupid, and making you think twice about it, even enjoying it for what it is. That's Bayonnetta - a ridiculously over the top game about some witch chick with no clothes, guns on her feet, beating the crap out of anything that moves, fast paced combat game that invokes plenty of chuckles along the way.

I'm tempted to buy a WiiU for the first time - there's been some good games released for that system this year, and I'd absolutely pick up Bayonnetta 2.

The Wii-U is finally getting the games it deserves right now, and with a bunch of high end releases slated for the end of this year and into next year, its one heck of a time to own a Wii-U!

Let's not get carried away. One decent release that had to be subsidized hardly marks the revival of an otherwise dead end platform.

It is kind of fitting cosmic justice though that Nintendo has to pay developers to make games for the platform these days, when factoring all the decades of their draconian, developer-hostile licensing practices..

Cobanermani456 started his playthrough end of last month, I like the overall look.....

    Oh and @DPI

ONE decent release? Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3d World, Mario Kart and now Bayonetta 2 is 4 games in the arsenal that are VERY well done and worth owning the system for alone at the moment. Also dont forget Donkey Kong, Smash Brothers in another month or so, Hyrule Warriors, Pikmin, Super Mario Brothers New, Super Luigi Brothers (great platformers) plus the list for next year is INTENSE, a lot of games haven't even been hinted at other than barely announced.

Also, they didn't pay to make publishers make a game, they didn't want Bayonetta to go down and saw an opportunity to have a game become their IP as well. They paid to make a game in general happen. If it wasn't for Nintendo, there would be NO bayonetta 2.
