nailed it

When I played the beta few days ago this is what it loooked like to me, I thought there was something wrong, it just looked so bland and undetailed I thought since it was beta maybe they didn't have all the textures done for the buildings/rubble.

It's almost comical to watch people who are getting to play a free beta think they have some sort of right to bitch and complain about a product that's not even finished yet.

Textures, netcode, crashing, all these are things that are being worked on, hence the entire fucking point of the beta.

The entire beta is what? 1.5-2GB? do people really expect to have full HD textures everywhere for a download that small?

Dice could roll out with a beta that includes a free high class asian hooker and people would still bitch and complain because they have nothing better to do.

Personally I've seen no issues with netcode - I did have a connection issue and a few times when the server itself went all wonky, pings shot through the roof and the game started doing weird things, how is that the fault of the game itself though? I'm not on some super redundant fiber line playing on servers with 99.9999% uptime. Shit happens, deal with it.

I'm on a standard 15mbit cable connection playing a free piece of beta software that's still in testing. I adjust my expectations to fit the situation. I'm still having a blast though.

It's like if lamborghini invited you to an open test of their latest concept/experimental car and you sat the whole time complaining about the car not having cup holders or some other trivial item that will obviously be in the final finished product.

I have to wonder about some of these people -- the screen shot posted above leads me to a few questions. 1) why does it say alpha trial in it? 2) why does it look like you are running 640x480 resolution? 3) are you playing the console version? 4) you have to have some sort of borked installation if it looks that bad see below:

battlefield-4-graphics-comparison.jpg

even on the crappiest and lowest resolution I've seen looks pretty damn good. Keeping in mind that this game still doesn't have it's super HD textures yet either. I'm spoiled as hell, I play at 1440p and it's smooth as hell.

its actually nearly 6gb

And yes we can "complain". The textures look like crap when the building falls. Great if they get fixed later. But, the point still stands that RIGHT NOW, the textures look like crap(when the building falls)

bf4 is fun.
gameplay improved.
netcode improved.
still need to play on servers with latency favors you, ping low is no indicator

Started up BF3 last night after playing a few hrs of BF4....

BF4 I'm averaging 80fps with the below settings, in BF3 with the same settings I get 130fps on average. Honestly I think BF3 looks better.

FPS example...

yeah, its almost like BF4 is missing optimizations and textures like its some sort of beta build thats months old or something.

I don't know man. I've seen demo sites look just like that. Also , here in the Tri-State they showed images of when the Towers fell and it looked pretty much like that. Fortunately I wasn't in the city went that went down ( could have been in those very towers at the top floor as I was trying to see if I could use Windows on the World as a place to entertain prospective clients and I was picking a day to go check it out) but, as expected, it was covered extensively here and all the streets I recognized were , well basically unrecognizable with the dust.

I didn't really mean it in that sense. Just more of like after the tower falls the map becomes shit. It's less fun to play and the dust makes everything look worse and play worse. By play worse I mean it affects things like sniping because you can't see shit at long distances. It might be realistic, but it's a game, and games are supposed to be sort of you know, fun.

Don't worry man. Just wait until 2015 for Levolution 2.0 in Battlefield 5. :D

I just feel like they're doing it just to do it. I don't feel like it adds a whole lot having this "map changing destruction" or "dynamic maps" or whatever. Granted I haven't followed all the details of BF4, it's just the feeling I get from playing the beta.

People have started actively asking everyone to let the tower stand because it's more fun that way. It's like DICE misunderstood when people said they wanted better destruction.

So, flooding the entire middle section of a map, requiring players to use watercraft or walk across rooftops, doesn't change a map significantly to you?

No, the collapse of the skyscraper doesn't do much in Siege of Shanghai, besides remove a team's ability to remotely camp the other four points. On other maps, there will be a bigger impact.

Though personally, I like the gun fights that happen at C after the skyscraper collapses. The action picks up across the entire map after C comes down.

Xbox 360 version of Alpha build with missing textures.

Yup, totally legit comparison.

up the resolution and textures one notch.

and thats not "missing" textures, thats the crap that they used after the building falls

edit, heres everything on ultra. Nailed it. :)

There's nothing technically wrong with the 'textures' after the building falls, you just have a problem with DICE's artwork direction in that case since its supposed to mimic dust everywhere and change the game flow with low visibility. If you don't like their artwork direction then contact them on twitter or don't buy the game. Complaining about it here serves no purpose.

or I can discuss it on this forum "aka complaining".

If you have any tiny problem, never bring it up, dont buy the game, and stop bitching.

Am I on the battlelog forums?

^This

IRL, if a building crumbles, everything near it turns gray due to dust, see picture on previous page. That's real, and that's the art direction DICE went with.

notice how in the picture you are referencing there is actual detail still left? Now compare it to the game where everything looks like it made with white construction paper. I hope (and expect) the textures to be better then that in the final game. I dont know about you guys, but im not ok with n64 textures on ultra.

/Shrug. I guess you guys are very gullible is all I can say if you think Dice never played their own beta builds prior to public access and are burning the midnight oil pulling these last minute patches out of thin air for issues that are glaringly obvious.

No offense but you're a little clueless here. The beta we are playing is a FORKED build, limited in scope and designed to serve DICE's checklist of testing needs, not ours. That means theyre analyzing things like game server infrastructure, not whether people think xyz weapon is overpowered/underpowered or certain things are glitchy.

That also means: bugs discovered get applied to retail build, not this beta. Only reason they've patched the beta a few times is to facilitate their scaling testing with Win7 machines that they hadn't optimized for properly.

One change doesn't make something dynamic. We haven't played on the other maps so you can't say anything either way. This game, thus far, has the hints of way too much rooftop camping, something that was not a problem in BF3. It remains to be seen with the other maps however.

The action in no way "picks up" after the tower goes down.

It absolutely does pick up, because teams stop fighting over or camping at C, and they disperse to the other four capture points, usually B and D. Then the rubble at C becomes a deathmatch ground which can be fought over by people at B and D.

The map gets better when the skyscraper collapses.

After the latest patch I'm getting 60-120 fps depending on what is on screen. I was in a chopper looking at a lot of stuff and sniping from the tower.

However I keep getting DirectX Error DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG now after a few minutes of play. Which sucks because it happened right after my most epic of headshots just now.

Same for me. I have a windows 7x64, gtx670 sli setup. A few minutes and it crashes to desktop with that error message. The game runs much smoother with the latest patches but now it crashes.

Hey Johnny can you test to see if it also does it with a single card running vs sli and let us know?

This and not this.

I feel that when the skyscraper is up, theres a big fight at C, than you have the snipers zooming down from C on everyone else, which is fun.

Than after it collapses, B and D are just zoomed straight into C, long distance sniping, etc, this actually makes for some fun battles and even more fun trying to avoid being hit by EVERYTHING!

I think you are in the minority with that last line.

When its up, people always try to get to the top which has massive firefights. People also use it to easily and quickly get to the other points by parachuting. Once its down no one even likes to go in the rubble for C because you are exposed from every angle(and the 31 snipers aiming for you now). Like someone has mentioned in here a few post ago, people ask in chat not to bring it down because of what it does to the map.

Thats because its a COD map like metro, you have 1 bridge for vehicular crossing/fights and then 1 good building once collapsed every COD fan goes sniper on rooftops.

Not sure I'd go full COD like METRO on this. Metro was new as it was literally one building where the fighting took place in such a small congested area, so that was very COD like.

This is more on par with Stalingrad (if I recall my 42 maps correctly). City based fighting with a vertical element added in.

Does anyone know if BF4 conflicts with overclocking through the combo of ASUS SmartDoctor with ASUS GamerOSD? I had to remove GamerOSD back when BF3 came out because it caused stuttering and instability.

Well Rivatuner Statistics Server (the extension used by Afterburner, PrecisionX, a handful of others for monitoring Direct3D and outputting things like framerate to OSD) isn't compatible with 64-bit game executables, and the author is pretty adamant about not supporting it any time soon (he says "it would take weeks of work" and he doesn't want to) so for now I just use the built-in FPS counter (open console with ` and type perfoverlay.drawfps 1)

Finally got a chance to put some time in after the update, definitely smoothed things out and boosted my performance in windows 7. Staying steady for 40-70 fps and I'm running outdated drivers on my 7950. Also seem to be getting into games quicker.

For some reason my GPU really heats up on the result screen between battles. I never hear my gpu fan kick into nuclear meltdown mode (I have it set to go from 65% to like 90% above 80C) during gameplay but within a few seconds of this screen it starts hitting 83C.

Might end up buying it after all.. but first I must see how well I do on my Fluid Mechanics test Monday haha.

I tried without sli and made through the final 5-10 minutes of a game then about 10 minutes into the next game it froze and I needed to kill in task manager. That's it for me in this beta.

Why would you be running outdated drivers when every company related to this game, from DICE to AMD to Nvidia, is screaming at everyone to update to the beta drivers that support BF4 before playing the beta?

Yeah, kinda silly considering A) it's his job and he's getting paid for developing the software, and B) it's a real feature that will only be a growing need in the future. That's like a pharmacist complaining they have to organize their shelves behind the counter to fill prescriptions on-time :p.

Just to note, FRAPS can overlay an FPS number for 64-bit executables, at least.

I actually rolled back to nvidia 320.49 since closed beta and it has been smooth. After all the updates though, imma grab the beta drivers and try em out

Well in fairness I get the feeling its a one man operation and it started as a project in his spare time, one of those kinda things, there's a little of that "eastern european" stubbornness I also detect in his flippant replies on his forum. Whatever, plenty of other ways to assess FPS.

I bought Windows 8 Pro x64 earlier today and just now had a chance to test BF4 Beta...night and freaking day difference, wow. No hitching, stuttering, or jittery nonsense no matter the video settings. Plays just like BF3. Everything set to ULTRA, 4x MSAA, 0x POST/FXAA (don't like how it blurs the image), 1080p, 100fov = solid 60fps no dips at all in a conquest large server.

There's really something wrong with the beta + windows 7 + nvidia drivers I'm assuming.

I figured it's more to due with the OS, yeah. Hopefully the final release works just as well on Win7 as it does on 8/8.1. Though I've read DICE saying dx11.1 (stupidly exclusive to Win8+) will be the faster path so I figured spending some money now on Windows 8 Pro to alleviate a temporary problem isn't the dumbest thing I've ever done, hehe (especially for the price I paid thanks to a kind [H] member).

I updated my drivers about ago and all it did was screw a bunch of things up(mainly CCC and it kept my screen at 80%)up until I re-installed the last working drivers I had (13.6) so I haven't bothered with it. Don't really have time to fool with it and worry about making my computer unusable. After midterms next week I'll be messing around with things.

Two quick questions about the beta/pre-order.

When does the beta end, the 15th?

And when does the free China Rising pre-order offer end? On the 15th as well?
