Batman: Arkham Origins

Yeah, 10pm for me in Mountain. Looking forward to it but wish it was earlier since I have to work in the morning, lol

They change the time it was supposed to unlock? Coulda swore it was goingto unlock at 7pm EST but now it's saying 12am EST.

Started playing this and it is pretty good but the first 30 minutes or so until the big boss fight is very linear. Love the new toys and how you start with the gadgets in the beginning rather than unlocking them one at a time. Graphics are dope, performance is through the roof, 3D works. Game is absolutely gorgeous. Thank God I stay with NVidia :D

I'm too tired to play too much of the game tonight but some quick early impressions of the first 30-40 minutes:

Good number of graphics options

Performance seems pretty good. I'm running with everything on their highest setting exception motion blur since I dislike motion blur and 4x MSAA at 2560x1440. Getting above 30FPS.

Not sure how well it is loading both of my 670s, I would need to check GPU load on each of them while playing but it does seem to use both at least.

The game looks really good. There is still some level of "well this is UE3" like the previous games did but the texture work seems good so far and the over-all world design so far is really good.

Like KickAssCorp said the opening through the first boss is very linear but it does a good job acting as a tutorial and introducing you to the game mechanics.

Combat feels like Arkham City. Not much to say beyond that about it.

The new Batman is very clearly not Kevin Conroy but he seems to be doing a good job in the early early parts of the game. I played City a little bit last night so I have a clear idea in my mind how Conroy sounds compared to the new guy (who's name I can't remember right now). I think I will end up liking his take on Batman though, it does feel like it fits in with the game world.

The main hook for the story at the start isn't great but it works. It will be interesting to see where they take it, but from how they deal with talking about the assassins makes them seem like they should all present different and potentially interesting boss battles.

And the game gave me this awesome geek out moment: Explorable Batcave. Not like the tiny thing in Asylum either, I get the feeling the game will be making more use of as the story goes along.

After a few config tweaks and playing the game for a few minutes, I really like how it's easy to get acquainted with. The new developers didn't make any drastic changes to the control scheme and core gameplay mechanic. It literally is pretty much the same as the previous games, which is a good thing IMO. No need to learn anything new, everything I want and expect Batman to do, he does. So far, I am happy. This is my 10 minute report.

Pretty good performance, everything maxed out on a 660TI and 1080p (with Physx HIGH) and it's running near 60 fps or more.

They added turbulence to fog, it's very nice! and for now, no more slow down or major FPS drop with they are Phyx Effect (like the previous ones)

Actually a couple of notes.
3D is not working properly.
Some PhysX effects are missing e.g., I hear paper flying but don't see them. Anyone having same problem? Just updated to new drivers and maxed out every single option including MSAA at 8X.

You realize AA was invented for low res cause the image wasn't sharp. 4x AA on that res is way overkill and placebo at that point. No need to sacrifice FPS for something you can't see..

I see they are stil forcing you to play through the game once in order to use your skins.

WHY do they force this upon you? The majority of players do not replay most games, especially a story-focused game.

I'd much rather be able to pick the batman skins I have in my first playthrough then have to beat the game once and then replay it to use a skin.

Interesting, you get to start out with most of the skills you unlocked in City. Not that I mind, but I was hoping for a slower intro into the action and not just thrown into the pit with a bunch of guys with guns and expected to hook disarm them before I'm swiz cheese when I can't even remember the key combo.

LOL @ Electrocutioner, omfg

You really never read the comics if you think that is a weird villains name.

He is talking about what happens to him.
Anyways, game is getting crappy reviews.
IGN 7.8/10
Gamespot 6/10

For me personally, it is fine. There is absolutely nothing new about it. It is like Arkham City. Story is good and worth going through once. I am not doing the Enigma crap much at all. All said and done, well worth the price of admission.

Eurogamer – 7/10
Polygon – 7/10
Official Xbox Mag – 8/10
Official Playstation Mag – 8/10
GameInformer 8.5/10

WB didn't pay off enough reviewers. Looks like a solid buy at the sub $20 price range for me.

The main negative I see from most oreviewers is that "It's more of the same, doesn't innovate" and that's about it...

So basically it you want more of the same you'll like it, but if you are looking for a "leap" or something new, then it's not here.

Just like Cod.. Or mario kart 56... It hard to innovate when fans want more of the same..

The presentation is better and there's a little more detective stuff than the last one.

Also this game run like a beast on my 660ti with physx high, witch i cannot say ablut the mess that ac was for the first 3 months... Theres a lot of options msaa 2,4,8,fxaa low, med, high, txaa low and high and all the dx11 stuff, almost always near 60fps, it drop when it's streaming for half a second

What the fuck is wrong with the cutscenes in this game? Constant stuttering, audio glitches, and crashing.

If it's 'more of the same' I think I'll wait until it reaches sub-$20. Not a die hard Batman fan, but I did enjoy the others (when they reached sub-$20 as well)

8's for a score from most review sites, and yet everyone is throwing it into the bargain bin. I don't get it. I guess everyone expects the game industry to revolutionize each iteration, when we all know that's far from what reality is sadly.

I'll post some of my own personal thoughts when I get into the game later tonight, but I'm a monstrous Batman fan (I try to keep bias out as much as possible, however).

Revolutionizing things every sequel on most games would be terrible. Some game series are built around the idea of every iteration being different (Final Fantasy, for example) but others have a set structure to how they should play and be presented. The Arkham games have a very specific style and gameplay to them. Radically changing what the game is would mean it is no longer an Arkham game anymore. The "more of the same" argument against sequels always bugs me. It's like reviewers are reaching for things to bitch about because they feel obligated to do so. Every game sequel can't be Assassin's Creed 2, which is what a lot of people and reviewers seem to expect. Asylum and City were already both amazing games, there really isn't a lot to improve on gameplay wise from either game. There can't be a massive leap from game to game when there isn't a massive leap to be taken.

They don't. The problem here is a series of wildly inflated and bizarre expectations.

Wild expectations? On this forum? Shocking.

I swear this crap happens every time a second or third iteration is released, for any game.

Sounds to me like a solid 8, judging by what everyone is saying. That's good enough for me.

I believe when reviewers such as Sessler talk of this, they mean they would like "more of the same with a twist" rather than just "more of the same" — not that there must be some drastic change that would denature what the game is. What that twist should be, however, I do not know...

So far I'm digging it although the audio glitches are very real. The first 3 cutscenes when you start the game are a scratchy/poppy mess. In-game audio is also a little off.
Not far enough to judge the game, but Nvidia owners - unless you have a MONSTER system, avoid the new AA option. It looks amazing, but it's a system hog. It dropped my FPS by about 40%. Going back to FXAA normalized everything. If you own a Titan or dual cards it's probably worth it for the visual splendor, though.

If a reviewer is going to say something like that then they should explain what they are looking for or what area they believe could be twisted or improved. Simply saying something like "this should be different" or "this should have a twist" is terrible writing and in no way justifies the statements. Reviews should be all about explaining your opinion and, if you have a score justifying the score given. If a person is just recording a video review live with no scripting or anything then those mistakes are understandable, but if they are doing a written review or scripting a video one then they need to take the bloody time and effort to make sure it even passes high school level reports.

I haven't had any audio problems in the cut scenes personally. The in-game audio balance is a bit weird at times though.

What kind of sound processor do you have? Onboard or a Dedicated? Just curious. Is it a known issue...?

Which AA option are you talking about, is it TXAA? That should be the middle ground between MSAA and FXAA, without the hit of MSAA of course.

The start-up videos seem to have some sort of audio glitch. I have it as well. It's only the start up videos though. The actual in-game videos are fine. So this isn't a big deal as the start up videos are just stupid advertisements basically.

Game runs great on my single GTX 680 at 1920*1200. I've got every setting maxed out and i'm using 'low' TXAA.

Arkham City is sitting right there with Mass Effect as my all time favorite game so if Origins is "more of the same", I can't see how that would be a bad thing at least for people like me that would have sex with Arkham City if it were possible. If Asylum and City were mediocre for you then Origins might not be so hot but I'd like to read reviews from diehard Asylum/City fanatics such as myself.

I'll be at work til 5 so I won't be able to get mine til after. I'm gonna buy the hard copy just to have it.

I'm using my 680's HDMI-out for audio. Raw audio straight through my receiver. Not sure if anything is a known issue - I just got up 30 minutes ago and only just finished a 10-minute runthrough.
The AA that was giving me massive issues is "TXAA High." Not sure if it was the AA or the combination of it and the PhysX effects, but any time any smoke was onscreen my FPS dropped into the 30's and 40's from a pretty constant 60. I keep my card with a +150 core clock and +350 memory clock OC, too...so I'm even floating above stock.

Interesting. I'll have to see how my 780 handles all max settings and report back.

For anyone that wants a more in-depth look at settings and their impacts, check out this fantastic guide from Nvidia.

TXAA always was a resource hog, remember it use MSAA with a kind of FXAA a the same time. So since MSAA is hogging by itself... Personnally i use FXAA High since the texture appears about the same as 4xMSAA maybe a little more blurry but that's negligable..

Textures in this game suck. My only real complaint. Given how large the game is (24GB) I feel like there is a lot of wasted space given the shit quality of the textures.

Well it's a last gen system and UE3 has it's limit.. given it was not designed to do this kind of game (open world). There's a lot of pre rendered video..

It's buggy though. I have already ran into 2 problems. One where you get stuck in a room and have no way out except to restart for last checkpoint. You just can't exit the room. And another where I ran into 2 thugs on a roof, buried in the snow. One up to his shoulders with a pipe and another up to his forehead lol. I wish I took a screen shot.

The stuck in a room one. I got into a room of one of the radio towers by breaking the window. Then I grappled a vent cover tore it down, then hooked it to get into the room. I couldn't climb into the vent, so I dropped down, saw a locked panel, hacked it, and it closed the window I broke into with steel bars. So the only way out is through the vent, but you can't get into the vent, the door doesn't open, so you are stuck.

Still if you liked AA and AC, the game feels just like them and graphically it's about the same IMHO. I like it except for the stuck room bug I got into. The other 2 games AA and AC, I never ran into issues like this they were much more polished out the door.

Looks like everyone has that tower bug. I just ran into it and looked on the Steam forums, there are complaints about it.

Supposedly the effects ARE better, especially PhysX, but those of us not in the graphical loop, won't really be able to tell. Unless you've just got a good eye for it. I linked to it in post #186.
