Barcode reader + inventory

I have been looking around at barcode readers and looking to purchase one.

Do you think I can get away just buying a laser scanner and put the inventory into excel, I'm hoping the software that comes with the scanner would allow that? I'm looking at http://www.barcodesinc.com/symbol/ls2208.htm btw

Or what do you think is the best way to do it?
 
If you get a ps/2 model, it will act like a keyboard and will just send the barcode as a series of keystrokes. I assume the USB models will act similarly. You can use it for anything that takes keyboard input(ie. just about anything). Not sure if I would use a spreadsheet for inventory, but I have no idea what you are actually doing so I can't help much with that.
 
We use that scanner (USB) at work. They are pretty good scanners I would say we get like 1 misread a month but we are also scanning through plastic which causes some errors. However when they scan they will add stuff to the front like when we scan ticket 234523 it will scan $234523. And as far as using excel for inventory you might want to set up something in access or somethign a little more manageable.
