Baldurs Gate 3 - Official Discussion Thread (2019)

I'm not very far, but in at least once instance I tried talking my way out of fighting some bandits and seemingly got nothing. If I got XP, it wasn't all that much. I fought them and ended up gaining a level.
I mean, I get it if you're playing a party that's all about diplomacy, but you kinda have to fight sometimes. You might be screwing yourself long term.

Yeah because of this i keep reloading and choosing the violent dialogue option instead of anything peaceful.

In response to the basilisk oil post.... that had to be one of the funnier results I've experienced in a long time after I brought him back to "life".

As I get further, I'm finding that I prefer using a gamepad for most things. However, when it comes to inventory management you almost have to swap to KB/M. The entire UI/UX changes and certain options just straight up aren't available. In other cases (like scroll memorization), they're broken. I started thinking I'd switch over to KB/M permanently, but general movement in the world is still very old school. I'd prefer to move around with the KB. Hopefully once the console versions hit they'll get more feedback on some of the missing stuff in the gamepad menus.

So I found a camera mod that allows me to tilt the camera up so I can see the horizon in front of me (tilt is assigned to the middle mouse button). It’s better than nothing. The default camera angle makes me feel claustrophobic. For example, when you’re walking up the side of a hill the camera points straight down at the ground instead of up the hill. I’m genuinely surprised that more people aren’t complaining about this.

This is all you need:

I think I'm going to hunt around for some different UI/UX mods. The KB/M setup would be great if it had the same type of movement that they allow for gamepads.

lol, get out of my head!! you wrote like literally word for word my thoughts on the gamepad support. it's nice and i also use it most of the time, but when it comes to finally sorting out your junk, trading with vendors, etc i end up switching to kb/m. i also have to assume the console version release will inundate them with all the feedback they need.

Also, I read an interview with Swen Vincke in which he says that the play-testers were doing things on their fourth playthrough that had never occurred to them before. This game, because of the rule set, is actually pretty hardcore - there’s a lot to learn here, and Swen says he doesn’t expect the average player to understand everything on their first playthrough, but that the game was designed to teach people intuitively.

Kind of impressive that such a hardcore game has such widespread appeal - further evidence that you don’t have to hand-hold gamers if you really know what you’re doing as a developer.

If you look at games that have really hit the mark… games like Elden Ring, or Skyrim, or Dark Souls… they’re games that people play, and keep on playing for many, many years.

I don’t think Swen meant that people should play Baldur’s Gate 3 four times this year… lol… just that it has so much depth that it will take the average person many playthroughs before they fully understand and appreciate the complexity of the game.

He also said that he considers the entirety of Act One to be the tutorial. Make of that what you will.

There is a mod that allows WASD movement, I use it. Works well, especially combined with the viewing angles mod that helps you look up.

I think I'm probably going to snag this myself. Hopefully it allows for arrow keys as well. I honestly don't know why this type of control scheme isn't in the game by default. Trying to click your environment with a posse of people around you is a constant struggle. I'd use a gamepad full-time if only certain functions weren't just straight-up missing from the pad UI.

Does anyone know how to get Nvidia overlay to work with this game? None of the hotkeys work.

My group is level 4 after killing those special knolls. Went back to the Goblin fort found out I could kill 2 or 3 drunk goblins while the were passed out drunk. Turned off Fog and Post processing.

Man this game is broke as hell, I keep getting stuck in dialogue mode in combat and can't do anything except alt+f4 and replay the last 20 minutes to get back to where I was.

This game passes time like no other. I thought Zelda was the game where you're like: "I'm going to play for one hour" and then 6 hours later you're like "oops, it's 4 in the morning". But this game takes the cake. You can spend hours just conversing in one small area of the game because there's so many damn NPCs.

I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. I do think the turn based combat is its weak point though. I mean it's cool how much you can do and how you can use the environment to your advantage. But it's still slow and often hard to follow when the camera is quickly jumping from one character to the next as they make their moves. It kind of feels like a chore at times. Case in point, I'm in the goblin camp, and I aggro the whole entire camp. All of a sudden I'm in a turn based battle with like 15 of them. At that point you gotta cancel all of your plans because it takes like half an hour to get through the battle.

It's also odd how horny some of these NPCs are. I think it was only my 2nd or 3rd time at camp before Lae'zel was telling me how delicious her lips were. And also Shadowheart professing her love for me in the same time period. Man... Even lewd games don't move this quickly. I must be emitting some good pheromones or something.

are you playing the latest hotfix? they fixed that bug in hotfix 3

So on the roof of 2 story building in bg3. Have to jump down into a room. -4 hp to jump. Meh. Jump down, and right thru a window on the 2nd floor to ground level and die. Oops

I had it to work on the first launch when I used Vulkan but now that I shifted to DX11 for HDR does not seem too anymore.

Jason Schreier: The Secret Behind the Success of Baldur’s Gate 3

There's been a lot of silly discourse surrounding Baldur's Gate 3. Is it making game developers panic? Raising the bar for other RPGs? IDK. But the biggest factor behind the game's tremendous success is simple: It's not made by a publicly traded company

With more than 450 employees and offices in six countries, Larian is a rarity in the video-game world — a company big enough to make games at a "triple-A" scale but not subject to the demands of the public market...most other video-game developers are either part of publicly traded companies or too small to make games as ambitious as Baldur's Gate 3...

Thanks good read. All the more reason to give Larian our money. They deserve it.

My performance in Act 3 in the same places is better after restart. entered 3 after a while in act 2, that probably didn't help.

I don't care if it's pushing 30fps, it's not a shooter, as long as it's smooth.

I'm about 35 hours in and I'm still doing stuff in Act 1... it's a time vortex for sure. You can't just play for an hour.

I talked a guy into helping me kill his boss and split the money. When I killed the boss I looted all the money. When the battle was over the guy said he didn't have any money to split. Then I talked him into letting his gnome slaves go free. Lol I didn't realize it until then that apparently I'm RP'ing Jack Sparrow?

I'm in Act 3 now and have been around around the city and I'm still pretty much maxing out my monitor at 144fps, although it does dip into the 130 here and there if I sit and watch the frame rate. Had one earth quake tremor and didn't have the fps monitor up at the time but it appeared smooth. That's with a 7800x3d though.

Anyone made it into the city without being spotted by the steel watch yet?

Can anyone recommend a guide on how to be effective in combat?

My experience thus far has been:

Miss!
Miss!
Miss!

Even when it says 90% hit percentage... Miss!

Bow and arrow aimed point blank at an enemies head... Miss!

It's so frustrating. Even on the easiest difficulty I'm getting destroyed.

It wouldn't be dnd without tons of misses.
