Bad parts in great games.

Lets see here. These are a few off the top off my head.

Tidus's laugh in Final Fantasy X.

The last hour of gameplay in Mass Effect 3.

The last hour of gameplay in KoToR 2.

The sway action from moving in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

All those damn sneaking around around missions while playing as Mary Jane in Spiderman...

Even the best games ever made have THAT part, whether it's a level, a boss, puzzle, whatever, that are so annoying and frustrating that it brings the rest of the game down.

For me, it's the Anor Londo Silver Knights in Dark Souls 1. If you try to block the arrows, you'll get knocked back, usually falling off the ledge and to your death. You just have to get lucky and make the Knight on the right fall off the ledge.
Sewer level in *insert otherwise good game*. Man I hated that part.

Any game that forces sneaking/stealth on you in a otherwise non sneaky game

The flying bit near the end of the first Crysis game

The backtracking in fallen order

The inability for keybind changes to work correctly in a game, mainly for me games made with the unreal engine, looking at you borderlands 3 and Gears 5

The point in Skyrim where I realized that the entire end game is built upon random encounters with Dragons (no matter where you are, no town is a Dragon-Free Zone.)

https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/35440/what-quest-triggers-the-random-dragon-attacks/63699

Really can't replay that game again, after that unwanted random escalation. - f you thought the enemy leveling in Oblivion was bad? The dragons in Skyrim do the same thing, but come to you

Up until that point I was enjoying my first Skyrim play-through, but every time now I try to replay I always remember greeting outgunned - I hate the idea of Elder Scrolls games turning into the German Blitzkrieg (what's the point of even going Dungeon-Crawling when the Dragons will come to you? Better to stabd around doing nothing!)

Bed of Chaos in the first Dark Souls. This goes to a larger issue where games put in that one encounter out of left field that goes against all the gameplay mechanics you had been learning up until that point. I feel that more could had been done to make this fight more interesting, but in the end it is just annoying even if you have mastered what to do.

The last Valkyrie in God of War on the hardest difficulty. All of the God of War games I've been able to play on the hardest difficulty with minor frustrations, even the newest one, but the final Valkyrie fight kicked my ass, I fought her so many times, it took me quite a while, but I finally beat her.

The other part is the weird basketball game in Dead Space. I never got the hang of it, it frustrated me, and I'll not go back to it.

I'm surprised no one said the racing level in the original Mafia, I remember quite a few people complaining about it in another thread a while back.

Even not on the hardest difficulty, I think I did maybe one or two and then said fuck it, not worth the frustration.

Oh yeah, that one was rough. They patched it to allow you to skip it after I did it like 50 times and finally beat it.

I would say just any game that requires a significant amount of backtracking in general. In open-world games I generally just end up fast-travelling most of the time after exploring places for the first time.

What I hated from FFX was: after all of this hardware upgrade, Sqqueenix couldn't be bothered to put us back up to 5-man parties. Hell, even FOUR would have covered everything except major bosses!

The continued castration of party sizes, plus the new invention of flying-only enemies mean you have to swap party members every battle. Also, them castrating summoner made the party swapping became even more pointless.

I beat it, but on replay i always stop about a third of way through because the leveling is too tedious. When Dragon Quest 4 introduced the wagon-swappable party members, they didn't castrate your main party size while doing-so!

FFX isn't the first game in the series to limit the ability of physical attackers to hit them.

some others I thought of:

TMNT, NES - I actually think this is a great game, except this level is always annoying...
TMNT-water-level.jpg

Super Mario 3, NES - This mini-boss is WAYYYYY too easy, kinda pisses me off...
OnlyEntireBetafish-size_restricted.gif

GTA: Vice City, PC - The game was easy and fun up until this lame-ass mission. I was on keyboard/mouse, maybe that's why, or framerate issues, I dunno, just remember it being laggy as all-hell...
vice-city-demolition-man-1.jpg

Guitar Hero type games - why do all these games have you play the note "after" you are suppose to and fault you for playing just before? As a real musician, this always pissed me off, and the calibration thing never worked.

Shadow of the Colossus, PS2 - LOVE this game, but DAMN the framerate really took a nose-dive-into-dolphin-shit during boss fights:
SOTC_Screen_PS4_PGW17_00008.0-790x527.jpg
...also, the last boss was horrible

I never played Final Fantasy X. As for the rest, can confirm and definitely agree. I'd also add to this list:

Any game ever - Any escort mission. These are universally bad. Every single escort mission I've ever played where you have to protect someone's dumb ass while moving from point A to point B sucks ass. Game developers either make them super easy or super fucking annoying. In either case, the missions aren't enjoyable at all.

Not that it was a great game, but AC:Vahalla and punishing you for killing civilians when your raiding, stupid woke shit ruining everything even historical accuracy.

The Assassin's Creed games have always punished you for killing civilians. At least parts 1 and 2.

Bed of Chaos also has really messed up hitboxes. So not only is it dumb and against the general game design decisions of the rest of the game: its also cheap. Blatantly, purely, spreadably cheap.

A lot of Final Fantasy X is bad. I'm saying this, as someone whom has rosey tinted nostalgia timeless love for FF7 and FF8. FFX is not a good entry in the series. Which really sucked, because it was the first PS2 Final Fantasy. And Squaresoft were graphics masters back then.

What sucked about it? I thought it was overall a great entry in the series. I can for forgive the linearity because I think that was more Squeenix not being able to figure out how to make an open world game look as good as FFX does for the time. Just look at the original PS2 version of FFXII and how badly that looked in comparison. There was more texture detail in some places, but it ran at a lower resolution and the framerate still dipped quite often. FFX is actually one of may favorite games in the series.

When I was 6, the NES Lone Ranger sometimes would grind my gears. You would think a guy was behind a wall or something and some how you would die by getting hit by a bad guy shooting through a corner.

speaking of FFX tidus's annoying vocal chords we all want to rip out:
  • No option to choose original Japanese Voices
  • No option to turn down, or off, voices
Really glad I was able to switch voices on Xenoblade Chronicles, the australian-or-whatever voices sucked. Also I'm not sure I can get through a game like Kingdom Hearts with the american voices yapping every 200ms. really annoyed me

You can choose Japanese audio in FFX HD, but you have to change all the text to Japanese to have that option. There is a mod that lets you choose English text with Japanese audio, though.

You might be misremembering. FF12 runs silky smooth on PS2 and is a bit of a technical marvel for that system. As it pushes a lot of polygons and only rarely drops frames. It also doesn't have the animation compression issues seen in FF10 (the most obvious is Yuna's staff shaking in her hand).

Also, while not by a lot, it is even higher resolution than FF10. FF12 is 512x448 Vs. FF10 512x416

I was just thinking about playing some Oblivion with a bunch of mods because Skyblivion is taking forever ... God I forgot how bad the level up system was. Oh, you want to have good stats? Better stop halfway through this quest and do jumping jacks. Don't want to level up the wrong way? Better not fix any of your armor, just use someone else's.

I know people shit on Skyrim for have a noob-tier level up system, but it's ten times better in terms of how it and the game interact.

If you wanted to obsessively min-max your stats this is how you did it, but it wasn't at all necessary to get through the game. You will get far more enjoyment out of it if you just play how you want to play. Farming rings that make you OP is far easier and quicker if you want to make the game easy.

No and I gotta check that out, looks tasty.

See, I'd rather have a character that's more organically powerful than exploiting loot, crafting, or magic loopholes. I just want to play the game and be good at the game. The other stuff breaks immersion, which arguably, so did jumping jacks, but less so for me, anyway.

its from the same people who did Enderal for Skyrim.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this, the dam puzzle in Half-Life. That was bit irritating.

Oh and, the ending of Immortal: Unchained. All that souls bashing coming to an empty end. Final Fantasy related, Ehrgeiz also had a similar ending.

Well I'd actually say the Greek keyboard thing in Daymare: 1998 was actually horrid. It was as if the developers expected you to know Greek. Wasn't really a great game though, lol.

Yea it dam near took me an hour to figure out:

Oh, that reminds me of the stupid chessboard puzzle in Durlag's Tower. I think there was a way to play it but even when I played through the EE version, I just loaded up on cloudkill and fireballs into the fog of war until they stopped giving me XP.

The last section in Alien Isolation where it turns all action checkpoint based.
All the time Johnny Silverhand appears in Cyberpunk 2077
Levels where you have no MCV in C&C games
Bossfights in Ghost Recon Breakpoint / Wildlands
The Top Gear branded missions in Forza Horizon 4
The last level in metro exodus where you have no weapons and forced to walk very slowly.
Bossfights in Far Cry 5
The bit after you start fighting aliens in Crysis
Main quest missions in Bethesda Elder Scrolls / Fallout games.

Bossfights in Ghost Recon Breakpoint / Wildlands
You mean those regular guys you shoot in the head and kill almost instantly? Walker, the Predator and T-800's not withstanding anyway.

There are lots of factors, not just how hard are they to kill, the predator is bad due to bullet sponge, stone is bad because soldiers keep spawning behind every crate continously. Flycatcher has the superfast drones, the boss drone in the first DLC is not just bullet sponge but other drones are spawning, they are all differernt kinds of annoying. Like they deribelately want the player to suffer instead of having fun. Any situation where enemies indefinitely keep spawning out of nowhere is a big no no for me to begin with.

The Top Gear branded missions in Forza Horizon 4

Bossfights in Far Cry 5

A lot of the Horizon story was child feeding trash tbh.

FC5 also became too repetitive after a while, more or less the same drugged up mission for like what, 3 times? Wouldn't even say it was a great game.

There's a part in the Doc Robot Needle Man stage of Mega Man 3 where you need to use Rush Jet to cross over a huge gap, and there are weapon refill items along the way.

The only problem is, if you die, the energy refill items don't respawn, so if you're out of ammo for Rush Jet, you're fucked.

FC5, to me, is the worst FC game in the series, storyline wise. The gameplay was fun, but it lacked the substance, and, it did get repetitive.

Another great game with a bad part was the ice level in Snake Rattle n' Roll.

I remember spending hours to get to that level as the game was hard already, and then the physics of sliding around made falling off the edge super easy, and I could never make it past that level. Maybe if I gave it a try now, I might be able to beat it?
