I have a FreeNAS server that I set up on my network. It contains all of my data. When I access my music, etc. it's sreaming the data from the NAS. I want to backup that data to a hard drive on my local windows box.

I thought about using SyncToy. It's painfully slow, though. I can send and receive data at about 90% efficiency on my slow 100mbps network, but with Synctoy, I'd be lucky to get 2mbps utlization.

Is there a way I can sync up the software on windows? I like SyncToy because I could have the directories echo (what I do on one directory is copied on the other, ie deletes/renames)

Is it easier to just connect my backup HD to the FreeNAS server and have the server back up to it's local HDs?

Anything? Thanks!

My personal opinion is to keep the backup device as close as possible to the largest data source that is going to be backed up. Just use dd or tar backups to your external drive, thats what i would do personally
