Amazon is seemingly set on diversifying their AWS instance offerings. Just recently, they launched AMD-powered M5a and R5a instances, along with a number of others. But this week, they launched something quite different: A1 instances based on Amazon's custom "Graviton" ARM CPUs. Details on the silicon itself are scarce, but the A1 instances offer up to 16 vCPUs, 32 GiB of RAM, 10 Gbps of network bandwidth, and up to 3.5 Gbps of "EBS Bandwidth", which appears to be a metric Amazon uses for storage performance. While CPU performance is unknown and pricing will depend on the region, instances are significantly cheaper per-core than Amazon's other offerings.
Built around Arm cores and making extensive use of custom-built silicon, the A1 instances are optimized for performance and cost. They are a great fit for scale-out workloads where you can share the load across a group of smaller instances. This includes containerized microservices, web servers, development environments, and caching fleets. The A1 instances are available in five sizes, all EBS-Optimized by default, at a significantly lower cost.
