AU Optronics will begin shipping 65- to 85-inch 8K TV panels in the first half of 2018. The company predicts that large 8K TVs will begin gaining momentum this year, reaching 10% in 2020.

Demand for 4K TV panels will also remain strong in 2018 as the penetration of 4K TVs is expected to hike to over 40% in 2018, from 30% a year earlier, with 4K displays becoming a standard for 50-inch and larger TV products in the year, Liao added.

I don't get it. If they can cram 4k the size of a tablet, what's the big challenge going to big 8k displays? It's an honest question

Hey how about getting that true 4k content out there first before moving on?

Not trolling as well, but with little 4k content and very few that can utilize 8k in PC environment due to cost barriers - why 8k already? I hope they all in trying to show low cast panel manufacturers (Samsung, LG, etc. aren't going to purchase on the secondary market) they are capable to sell panels in a number of years when 8k may matter.

Let's saturate 4k and think about 8k a few years from now...

Why not put 8k out there- maybe it'll hasten 4k content creation.

Maybe. More likely as adoption increases 4k will increase once there is demand. We should have more content with the entry point nowadays. I'm still shocked (shouldn't be) that comcast isn't doing any 4k. They have a larger pipeline than DirecTV... guess they'll have to lose more subscriptions before considering something like that, which will never happen.

It's not like we're drowning in 120+ Hz 4k panels

I'll get 8k when mainstream gpu's can support it.
I expect this to be no sooner than 2024.

Yeah if it wasnt for UHD Blu-Rays there wouldnt be a need for 4k TV's. Nothing broadcast on any network is sourced from 4k shoots.

    Amazon/Netflix?

I jumped because of those and what I feel is critical mass in terms of UHD Blu-Ray availability, on top of an outstanding deal on an LG B7A.

TV manufacturers need an excuse to get people to buy new sets. After the HD boom people are once again keeping their televisions for 10 years or more. The big push is for the Summer Olympics in 2020.
