Audiences Abandon Amazon Prime and HBO While Netflix Grows

During a recent survey, Juniper Research has found evidence of increased consumer churn in various video streaming services. It is important to note that most consumers in the US and China are paying for 3 subscription video on demand services (SVOD) because no one service satisfies them. But because these SVOD services are adding more curated content to satiate their customers; the cost of SVOD services is increasing. Thus owning 3 SVOD services suddenly becomes a burden and the consumer has to choose which SVOD services has the most value to keep. Amazon Prime (-2.9%), HBO (-19.2%), and Now TV are facing subscriber retention issues while Netflix (6.3%), which is set to spend 13 billion on content this year, has grown its customer base.

Research author Lauren Foye noted: "The use of multiple subscriptions suggests that no one provider offers enough to currently satisfy consumers. Juniper finds a growing danger in users reducing, or switching SVOD subscriptions, as monthly fees inevitably rise as a result of ever-increasing content spend; Netflix alone is set to spend $13 billion this year." The research also found that the curation of content is set to become a growing issue, with the need to engage consumers as critical, lest SVOD providers see unsatisfactory services cancelled.

Amazon Prime is pretty shit here in Finland. It doesn't take long to watch everything that's worth watching and then there's no point in keeping the sub. Also the search and category listings etc. sucks BIG time. Never had HBO Nordic or Netflix sub.

Redbox is the only source of entertainment I use. I don't get roped into TV shows/series as I frankly don't want to waste the time/money. I can see though how streaming fatigue can kick in. Especially if you tack on Hulu, CBS, ESPN and all the other numerous variants.

Amazon Prime isn't just streaming though and I find it hard to believe a bunch are ditching Prime memberships when they are dominating the market.

I would have thought it be common knowledge that people go to Prime not for video streaming. It's a decent perk despite shitty video quality. We did use it a few times while on vacation though.

Amazon Prime's streaming is total shit, aside from a few series. The Expanse and The Grand Tour. that's all I watch it for.

amazon prime = man in the high castle and "buy it only"... its mostly junk except if you pay for shows.

hbo go = you pay for a show > cancel. heck some people binge watch in a 7 day trial then cancel. GOT = subscribers go up > over its done.

I have Prime for the free shipping and the extra 3% cash back when using my Amazon credit card. (normal cash back is 2% but rises to 5% when you have Prime)
I buy a lot of stuff for the office, so the extra 3% pays for the cost of having prime.

The video is just an added bonus, although we don't use it much.

The main streaming service we use is the top hulu one where we get all the channels. Works very well. Then its netflix, but at the moment, mainly for DVD's. then we have amazon, but the prime membership for me is ALL about the shipping, the video portion is just a nice add-on that once in a while we use.

That is true for few markets where Amazon has actual stores. For the rest of the world, Prime is really only streaming + Twitch Prime, which is now useless due removal of ad-free watching.

The TV/Movie side of Prime is pretty weak. It's fantastic if you want to watch masses of cheap shot on video horror made over the past 5 years for a budget of $2000 but not much else. You really have to dig to find the gems.

I think this also really depends on what is out right now. I only subscribe to HBO when there is a show I want to see. When it's over, I cancel. Why pay for something I'm not using?

Let's see.. we have:

Amazon Prime (mostly for shipping though)
Netflix (daughter watches it mostly, but we watch the Daredevil type stuff)
Hulu (honestly should cancel, but occasionally good for a new show we discovered midstream)
PS Vue
Youtube TV

Everyone uses the last two, as neither has 100 percent of the channels covered, and they aren't 100% reliable so having a backup is nice.

Thing is, we had all but Vue and Youtube TV even when we had traditional DirecTV. And the last 2 are still way cheaper than that was.

Cancelled Netflix when they decided to get political.

Prime is attached to my Amazon account and there are a few shows worth watching. The Man in the High Castle and Sneaky Pete being the best.

While I have HBO Go with my employee account I've never watched it. Been meaning to watch a few episodes of GOT to see if I'd like it.

My biggest complaint with Amazon is their player is garbage and trying to find anything good to watch is about as easy as actually shopping on Amazon. HBO I use for GOT and then cancel.

I don't think I'd pay for Amazon Video by itself. I rarely watch it. However, I already have Prime and get a lot of use out of it. Their video is just an add-on to that deal.

My issue with Amazon Prime streaming I had prime for 3 years (turned it off 2 months ago). 1.Trying to browse for something to watch with the prime browser is a pain in the ass. 2. They have been extremely slow in adding new content I enjoy for some time. Well and the other reason i canceled it was the last 4 prime packages i ordered took around a week and a half to receive.

Netflix isnt much better ........I usually turn it on for 1 month out of each quarter to watch a few shows.

I have Prime just for the shipping (which is getting worse).

Most of the video content they offer is already on Hulu or Netflix.

Well, I'm tempted to get Prime just for The Expanse. But like you said, they got nothing else.

But doesn't prime also have music streaming? I might be able to justify getting prime with that :/

Cancelled Netflix when they decided to get political.

I honestly don't give a damn, and sometimes even symphatize, with some of the causes. But good lord, if I sit down to watch some entertainment I want to be entertained. And it's HARD to find anything there that doesn't carry a big political statement attached, so much that the fun is lost.

I mean, they are holding onto that final season of Game of Thrones so that people keep their subscriptions longer, right?

Good point, I recently ditched my prime because: 1, the packages don't always arrive on time, 2, Amazon's tack on services such as Music get more limited as they try to sell you upgrade services, 3, if I spend $25 shipping is free anyways.

I have Prime Video for The Expanse, and I have HBO Now for Game of Thrones and Westworld.

Netflix and Youtube are literally "everything else."

Also, has anyone tried to navigate through Prime's video catalogue? It's fucking dumb. They are lucky that The Expanse is so damn good.

When people tell me they pay for Amazon prime every month, and then they have to pay again so they can watch a show/movie......no thanks.

I'm not getting double-dipped.

Amazon prime not removing ads for twitch is bogus, btw. That's the #1 reason people use Amazon prime with twitch. They DON'T want ads.

Amazon prime for video is meh. The video is an add on benefit for our household, we pay for the subscription for other reasons.

Netflix is decent and is still a good value for us.

We also get HBO and STARZ. STARZ just shitcanned everything I watch on it but American Gods and that's looking dubious. HBO has westworld and GOT and that's it. I got a deal on it, but I wouldn't pay full price.

Funny that.

I have Amazon Prime, and have for many (5?) years, yet never once have I streamed any video content off of it.

I just use it for the shipping.

Personally I just want one service that has ALL the content.

I hate having to pick and choose based on what shows I want to watch.

One single service, all the content, or at least a single unified interface across all the many services.

Maybe for you. I don't even count it because I order enough goods through Amazon Prime that the video service is just a nice freebee to me.

Now I do rotate through HBO, Cinamax. etc via my Amazon Prime membership, but that's a convenience thing.

I binge a service until I've seen all I want to from what they have available, then I move the fuck on to another one. I will continue to do so until it no longer makes sense to continue.

I used to pay for my internet service and then pay for Direct TV, total for the two was around $210 a month. Now I pay about $70 for internet and at the most around $35 in services including my prime subscription. All in all I think I am far ahead of where I was.

Cable companies did that and people claimed they didn't want to pay for the stuff they don't watch. So here we are.

Don't forget about Bosch, that's a good cop show as well. Personally I have prime more for the music than anything else. The free book every month and games from twitch are nice as well.

Not a shock considering you still need to pay for most of the stuff worth watching on Prime TV.

And you can still go with Cable, if that works for you. Most of them include Netflix to make the cost a little less painful for you, as they gently ram you up the ass.

* and oh hey, don't look over here a I ramp-up your monthly fee $10 for no reason :D

Speaking of pulling a dick out of my ass, I would have canceled Amazon Prime Streaming years ago if I didn't take advantage of the shipping on a weekly basis. IF it goes up any more, and I might have rethink that.

I only have Netflix & Hulu.

Netflix: Use it a lot, they are getting better and their originals are the best of the streaming services.

Hulu: It's got a couple of decent original shows. I dislike the commercials and they don't have every season of shows that I want to watch, and, they'll be several seasons behind on shows.
