Excerpt:

AMD has a new ATI Radeon HD 2000-series graphics processor in the pipeline slated for Q4’2007. The new RV670 GPU is not an ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT replacement, but rather an additional product to AMD’s current midrange lineup. Very little detail is known about RV670 right now.

They directly compare it to the X1950PRO, one of the best bang/buck cards right now at that range. If true, we might finally get a decent midrange.

Good to hear, we need some mid-range stuff out. Wonder how it will compare to the (maybe) mid-range card from Nvidia that is also supposed to be out then.

Either way, both companies screwed over consumers in the mid-range so far.

Isnt current mid range supposed to be as fast as older gen high end cards? I find it rather hard to get excited for a mid range card that performs like... the old mid range card :(

In some cases, the current new 128-bits perform worse

128-bit needs to die

Nvidia is doing the same in the fall. AMD is hopeless no matter what they do. :(

Intel and their penryns. Nvidia and their 8x00GS with 256bit memory bus.

Why would they release this? If anything, make the 2900XT the midrange, and give us something that performs on par or better than an 8800ultra.

This card seems relatively pointless.

Because ATI can't make something that's faster than the 8800Ultra at present?

Obviously.

Which begs the question...why is something needed between the 2600 and 2900 at all? If someone wants 1950pro level performance...they'd probably just purchase a 1950pro  (I'm sure this new midrange card will blow goats @ dx10, so that "advantage" is negated even before release)

Seems like the GTS 320 already fills this slot in the market quite adequately. I predict few people actually purchase this card, when better, cheaper, more mature options are out at present.

When I needed X1950Pro (upper-mid range) performance I chose the X1950Pro. When I needed a newer mid range card for my GF's new gaming rig, I bought a 8800GTS 320MB. So unless ATI can make something that costs the same or slightly less than the 8800GTS 320MB that performs roughly the same, I can't see this new card as being worth while for anyone.

Maybe 2900xt 256meg version?

I personally think its time ati made the Pro naming scheme more high end again.

Have the XT be the ultra high end
Pro high end
and then just the number of the series for the mid
and then maybe SE or Non pro for low

I also liked nvidias naming scheme back in the 6800 series

6800 Ultra
6800 GT
6800

nice and simple.
