ATI and HDCP class action suit

I dunno if anyone remembers this, but apparently the "HDCP ready" scandal from long ago actually turned into a class-action suit that ATI agreed to settle with. If you bought one of the ATI-branded cards that falsely claimed to support HDCP, you can get a free Radeon 4650, a nice upgrade if you're still using one of those old cards.

Posted this on my site.
Thanks OP!

Just got a video card in the mail today. There wasn't any kind of paper work in the box so it took me a while to remember this lawsuit. At least I hope it's from the lawsuit...

Has anyone else got it? Does anyone know what model this card is?

The video card I received is a Sapphire HD4650 512M DDR2 PCI-E card (which means there were less than 55,000 qualified class members).

4650s sell for around $45. If it costs ATI $25 to build a card, that's like $1.375 Million out of ATI's pocket.

And of course, like any class-action, the lawyers get the lions-share...

They're rocking 5970 CrossFireX, baybee!

that is if everyone filed for it.. also if all those people still live at the same address when they filed it.. otherwise the cards sent back to ATI or the AIB if its not forwarded to the person.. so while its possible they could lose 1.375 million.. i doubt it will be anywhere close to that..

I received mine today. It had a video card in an anti-static bag wrapped with bubble wrap, a driver CD, and a 1/2 sheet of paper with a "class member" letter.

Got the same in the mail yesterday. Guess it's time to start putting together an HTPC build or maybe upgrade my parents' PC.

you cannot make a claim anymore (like I really cared as I had 3X ati cards that would have qualified) but what would i do with 3x cards that are significantly slower than what I have now?

Got mine in the mail yesterday too. The wife had a cow when she opened it. "What did you order now?!" she said. She relaxed after I read the Class Action description to her. Threw it in the HTPC , works fine. Been holding out on getting a new card for it and now glad I did. It is only the vanilla 4650 with ddr2, but who's complaining, it's free.

Damn, never saw this the first time. I had 4 qualifying purchases too. :(

Received a Sapphire 4650 Friday. No paperwork, just the card and a driver disc. Basically an OEM setup. I figured the cards received would of been ATI brand. I wonder why it's not. Oh well, I figured more than 55k would of applied and we would of got the lower end card so I'm quite happy with this.

They dont make retail ATI branded cards anymore IIRC. Sapphire is one of ATI's major OEMs so even if you had received an ATI white box card, odds are it would have been manufactured by Sapphire. As long as its a reference card I wouldn't worry too much.

I'm in the same boat with three cards I could have made a claim for. I would have given the cards away to friends since I have no use for them.

got mine today, gave it to a friend for the pc he's building for his son, better than the x800 i gave him previously

yeah i have 4 or 5 cards that would of qualified.. but honestly i really didnt care.. cards did what they were suppose to and having HDCP support or not didnt matter to me.. so im not going to go out of my way to try and get something out of ATI for something that didnt really effect me..
