Scratches head, what review were you reading lowteckh?
The ones that showed the 5870s skyrocketing way above its predecessors (and was using the 4890 as comparison as well, what, I can't do that?). Was expecting more, is it not allowed?

And this is why you should never take AMD's own benchmark crap as any sign of truth. Well, there is truth but it was way too exaggerated. I was expecting a lot more, almost buying into the "omg, will be 2x of the old stuff!!!".
well performance can be up to 2x the performance of a 4870 (maybe even a bit more), it just depends on the game. some games might offer 50% better performance, some 75%, and some 100%. some games might not scale well at all due to being cpu limited (sometimes depending on resolution as well). so it all depends on what games you play and at what settings/ resolution you want to play at. like someone said, future games may widen the performance gap even further.
Ketchup is red too; you're just regurgitating the obvious. I didn't say it sucked, I said I was looking for more. Move along.
I personally really want ATI to win for about a year to gain some market + money so then AMD can compete again with Intel in the CPU market.
I'm not saying the card is shitty by any means, I just wanted a little higher numbers because I truly do think that Nvidia will be getting numbers around the same.
A smart man would save his opinion for the [H]ard review. But since I am not that smart...
With the exception of HAWX, crossfire 5870's just aren't kicking SLI GTX 285's like I thought they would. And c'mon! We STILL can't "play" Crysis yet? wtf.
I think the biggest selling point will be price - and I applaud AMD for that. The aggressive pricing of the 4xxx series brought high end gaming to a lot more people than Nvidia pricing would have. From what I've heard, the new cards will be very reasonably priced, and should kick butt at their respective price points.
A+ for value. A for performance.
Bring on the [H] review!
I'm disappointed that the 57XX series isn't ready, but I guess that is to be expected.
What language is that in?
I think it's 5870X2 is going to get CPU limited to hell.
Look at Crysis 2560 between AA and no AA there was only an 8.5% hit where as 285X2 fell by 45%. And we are talking 8xAA here
yeah anybody without a an overclocked i7 would be almost foolish to run a 5870x2 or 5870 crossfire setup.I think it's 5870X2 is going to get CPU limited to hell.

i'll wait to read the [H] review but i'm pretty convinced now to hold off till the 5870x2 comes out and get a pair instead of two 5870s.
Once lucid becomes more standard, pci lanes will become much more valuable. No more ditching old cards, just moving them down a slot.
Off topic...
Once it becomes standard?I'll believe it when I see it. I'd be impressed if it actually worked. I'd be extremely impressed if it gets decent performance. And I'd be completely shocked if 2 5870's connected by the Hydra chip manage to outperform a 5870x2 or a 5870 crossfire setup.
I hope you have at least a little oc on that 920 cause you will need it. also what res is that 22inch Acer? even a single 5870 clearly looks like plenty for 1920 with second one almost being crazy but if you have the money and of course the cpu to back that up then why not. at 1680 a single 5870 would be WAY more than enough and again you would certainly need to oc that cpu if you havent.just read the article, and im impressed. whats more amazing is that i might actually be able to run 2 of these things in my system, but i couldnt afford it. i love the idle power draw, my older card just doesnt keep up with that one bit.
Hmm, these benches are seriously unimpressive. Barely beating a GTX285 in the games I'd like to see more gains. In GTA IV with no AA it's only getting +2FPS over the 285 at 2560x1600.
And I don't see it matching an SLI'd 285? In most of the tests a 285 in SLi configuration kills the 5870 unless 8xAA is used.
Not a fan of the way Toms Hardware tests though so I'll wait to see what other sites say.
they will certainly drop a little but just depends how long it takes Nvidia to get their own new cards out too. after that production will have ended on those cards anyway. So I guess the GTX 285's won't drop by at least $50-100 Christmas into Q1 2010?

at 1680 your cpu will certainly bottleneck the crap out of a 5870x2 compared to having an overclocked i7. thats almost like having 2 4870x2 in crossfire which is beyond ridiculous for that res anyway. I certainly would not get more than one 5870 for 1680 and that will be a massive jump over what you have now. btw you certainly havent been maxing games with that card anyway. I think you need to focus on getting a big boy monitor as 1680x1050 would be quite low for such a high end i7/5870x2 build when you go that route. With everyone saying that the 5870x2 might be bottle necked by cpu, should i be at all worried at all about upgrading my 3870x2 with a 1680x1050 coupled with a 3.6ghz q6600?
thinking about dumping my rig at the beginning of the year and rebuilding with a 5870x2 / 5890x2, 12GB triple channel ram, 120GB SSD, 2x 2TB HDD, windows 7, i7 920 / 940, suitable mobo.
does it make sense to do this yet... or should i be waiting another year.
i play my games at max res, max gfx.

it would still severely limit the potential of a 5870x2 even at 1920. hardocp had an article with gtx280 in tril sli and even at 2560 the i7 at 3.8 spanked the crap out out of the Core 2 quad and Phenom 2 at 3.8. well his Q6600 is not as fast clock for clock as the newer Core 2 quads so his at 3.6 would be like the newer 9650 at 3.3 or so. then you have to think about the 5870x2 is probably about as fast as 3 gtx280 sli. so I would certainly say at 1920 he would only get about 75% of what the 5870x2 could do in some games and at 1680 it would be even worse. IMO we really need a new cpu scaling article just to see some actual real numbers with the new gen of cards. If it were me, I would hold off on the i7/mobo and buy a 24" and up monitor to go with the ssd and win 7. Then, wait for prices to fall because intel is unloading the big guns next year. If you go higher resolution you will be less cpu bound and 3.6ghz should be fine for now.
