These are the 2 cards in my price range of $120-140Australian

The 9600GT runs for $20 more than the ATI
(both are Asus branded)

Is either leaps and bounds better or worse than the other?

I'm into Crysis, Halo2, Doom3, Quake4 and basically most of the games that came out 2 years ago

I'm going to be using them in a nice little box with a P4 3.2HT and 2gb DDR400 dual channel

Monitor is a nice but older IBM 19"
I would like to be able to turn all the eye candy up on everything (AA/AF etc)
and not have issues at 1280x1024

I was leaning towards the ATI card just because of personal preference, but will gladly switch if the 9600gt is a better value

for reference I'm upgrading from a radeon 9600
(SLI is out of the options as the mobo only has the one x16 slot)

You are gonna have issues with the P4 being able to feed your videocard and also not being dual core, will likely choke on newer games, too.

The 4670 should compete better with AA turned on vs. 9600GT. 9600GT is a bit better in most situations.. I got the 4670 since I prefer ATI but I got a really good deal on the MSI 4670 which is very quiet in addition to not requiring much power. It's a decent card as a stop gap (for me)... x850xt died in H2O accident.

On a higher end system, I would go with the 9600GT. The 4670 only has a 128-bit memory interface, which will become a real bottleneck at higher resolutions and with AA turned up. However, as chameleoneel mentioned, you may not see a whole lot of difference between the two cards since your cpu will probably be your bottleneck, especially at 1280x1024. If $20 isn't a big deal to you, get the 9600GT. Check out this thread regarding the 4670:

Also, make sure your power supply can handle the new card. I had issues running my 8800GS (roughly the same power draw as a 9600GT) with a 320W psu, which happened to run a 8600GT just fine (which is similar in power draw to the 4670). See this thread for more details:

feature wise the 4670 hands down.

performance probably goes to the 9600GT

The 4760 is the best in its class bar none (it class being that it performance per wattage requirement, it doesn't require a PCIe power cable, uses less, and so on) but I think the 9600GT will kill it in crysis. all the other games your going to trade blows or play around the same with the edge going to the 9600GT. If you turn up AA the 4670 may actually be better.

How about HD 3870 or HD 3850, that would be identical to HD 4670 in term of performance but with 256bit memory. HD 4830 will blow them all out but it will be held back by your CPU.

A HD 3870 would best it and an HD 3850 would some of the time. A couple of shopping options if he can find a good deal for those.

with a single core P4 neither card will offer much of a gaming experience in the newer games.
