I have an Asus barebone (V3-M2V890) and 2gb of ddr2-667 and I need to choose a cpu now. The mainboard accepts X2's up to 5200+ but I really dont want to wait until the 5200+ is in stock here in Sweden. So..

What cpu do I need to be guaranteed to be able to decode x264 720p video with a bitrate at lets say 8mbps without any gpu-acceleration? What about 1080p? Come to think of it it needs to decode 1080p at lets say 15mbps and be able to downsample it to 720p before it goes to my tv. Dont know what the downsampling will require aditionally to the decoding.. anyone have an idea?

So the question is, what is the minimum cpu i need to be guaranteed to play 720p x264 @ 8mpbs, 1080p x264 @ 15mbps + downsample?

Well I dunno about playing stuff @ 8mbps etc but my 4800 x2 can play hidef 720p movies no problem using vlc which doesnt use video acceleration, so that cpu can do it no problem, although it does take about 10 seconds if I move the bar to advance the movie forward for the screen to start playing again. but all in all it works perfect and its all done via the cpu.

A 5000+ will do anything you need to do, including HDDVD/Blu-ray if it is ripped. I do suggest hardware acceleration through a graphics card such as a 8500/8600 nvidia card if you are watching them off the disk. For any 'downloaded' HD content, the 5000+ will do it all. With the right set of codecs, you can get away with even less of a processor, but you will probably want a little bit of CPU overhead incase there are some really high bitrate clips you want to play without an issue.

But if your TV/projector/monitor is 720p, there isn't a need to play 1080p video and downscale it to 720p, that is unless you are watching an HDDVD/Blu-ray and it is necessary.

i have a x2 4600+ and i can play HD content without a hitch using VLC Media Player. I do have a 8600gts for hardware decoding of HD content when I want though but I just tried using VLC (with software decoder) and played a HD clip and it ran smoothly (I run Vista Ultimate 32-bit and 2 gigs of ram). I didnt disable my kaspersky AV or anything either. Hope this helps....

I bought an 5000+, 2600mhz, 65nm, 65w, 2x512kb L2 and two sticks of 1gb ddr2-667. It playes all 720p x264 clips I have. I havent tried 1080p yet though.

Thanks for the input guys! :)

the laptop in my sig will do 720p with the coreavc codec. a desktop dual core chip will have no trouble at all.
