AT&T To Cap DSL Internet Data Usage At 150GB

You are so full of shit that I'm cracking up. If you download even a few linux ISO's you'd already be around 6GB. Add in even one or two netflix movies a month and two hulu movies and you're already over that.

Downloading one blu-ray is 8GB heavily compressed.

One HD Netflix movie is around 2 GB.

And the ISPs don't care about how much data is in one illegally downloaded Blu Ray.

lol @ all of the people who apparently download dozens of linux isos per month. Are they even updated that often? :p

5-10 a month @ 10-15GB a piece. Unless you are going nuts with HD rips of TV seasons, generally should be fine.

I paid for the highest tier service from UVerse and now they try to cap me. This bullshit.

Awesome. We switched from Time warner cable to uverse because Time Warner is just absolute shit in my are. Looks like I'll have to try and find another service provider now, I probably won't go over 250GB cap each month, but possibly. The last time I looked though those were the only providers for my area..

I thought about switching to ATT DSL but after this new I will not even consider them. So now Comcrap and ATT both have caps. I guess I will hold on to my Cavalier G2 for a while (unless they decide to put a cap) then well I will have to go internet free :)

I have AT&T uverse, 12up, and I hae to say i could care less. I don't use anywhere NEAR 250gb of data in a month, let alone multiple months. I don't dl torrents etc. I do watch my fair share of hulu, and online gaming, but still.

At the same time, the network connection has been so good, so consistent, as well as the TV, I don't see those 2% of users affecting anyone.

(Darn no edit)
And at least AT&T admits to, and advertised their cap, as opposed to everyone else that denies they exist.

What are you, the internet police?
Shutup and quit complaining. There is no such thing as an unlimited product.
They are selling an unlimited connection, and they should honor that.
Don't play dumb. You know better than that. It's pay day some day. For people not like you (aka and ie "98% of AT&T customers"), it's merely a marketing ploy to attain the majority of one's clients. The internet wasn't meant for you.

balls forgot about edit anyways i watch a ton of my shows off like comedy central hulu netflicks etc i haven't measured my usage but i bet it's above 150. Hell i just watched 3 days of final round which was like 300Kbp/s for a good 8 hours a day which is what right there like 25ish gigs. Sure it's just a rare instance once a month or so but put that with other heavy video usage it adds up.

I thought about getting the Netflix $8/mo. unlimited stream plan, but with this, forget it. AT&T will cost NF business from my perspective.

+1

I can easily go over 60GB just by watching YouTube. A 10 minute 720p video is >200 megabytes. Obviously much more for 1080p.

I watch a lot of Starcraft videos, it adds up extremely quickly.

150gig is crap 250gig is where comcast was last at go be competitive at&t and do a 300gig cap.

I'm sure there are lots of gamers who could easily go over that if they put all their Steam games on a new computer. With games over 10GB, it doesn't take too many to go over 150GB.

Some people have families. Think about how much bandwidth a family of five would use if they all watched videos on the internet instead of watching TV.

Yea, but I'd love to see them actually play all those games in a month. Or you could just backup your files so you don't have to waste time downloading them all again.

That depends, apparently all those complaining watch 6+ hours of HD streaming video a day.

I do love those saying they go over 1TB. That's 666 hours of video at 1.5GB/hr (typical of streaming HD).

Uh, people do watch over 6 hours of television a day, so...I don't see how it's not feasible for someone to watch that much HD and go over the limit.

Are you suggesting we should increase the price of cable TV for those that watch that much TV?

150GB is a hell of a lot more than the 25GB the fucking dbag CRTC in Canada is trying to force upon us. I could live with 150GB per month but not 25GB.

They already are.

LOL! 'cause they don't have a cap?

At least their cap for all speed tiers is 250gb, whereas for ATT, DSL is locked at 150gb and then U-Verse is 250gb. I believe for both still, if you subscribe to their business vs. consumer internet, that's still unlimited. I may have to do that instead. Its too bad Comcast and ATT are my only home internet choices where I live. FIOS will never come here thanks to red-tape from ATT.

lol no no, their Steam steamapps data keeps getting corrupted, so they end up entirely deleting their downloaded Steam content and redownloading it from scratch. :D

I can't say much for Comcast in general (though I've never had a major problem with their service, mostly their pricing), at least their cap is 250 GB, and going over it doesn't do anything (at least, I've never gotten a notice or extra fees or anything of that nature).

The thread starter's link didn't offer much details, but I did a little Googling around and found these links:

http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Exclusive-ATT-To-Impose-150GB-DSL-Cap-Overages-113149

DSLReports.com said:
Broadband Reports was the first to learn, and has confirmed with AT&T, that the company will be implementing a new 150GB monthly usage cap for all DSL customers and a new 250 GB cap on all U-Verse users starting on May 2. From March 18 to March 31, AT&T users are going to be receiving notices informing them of the change in the company's terms of service. AT&T spokesman Seth Bloom confirmed the news to Broadband Reports after we initially contacted him last Friday concerning a leaked copy of the upcoming user notification. According to Bloom, the cap will involve overage charges. However, only users who consistently exceed the new caps will have to deal with these charges.

This is how it will work: only users who exceed the new usage cap three times -- across the life of your account, not per month -- will be forced to pay these new per byte overages. Overages will be $10 for every 50GB over the 150 GB or 250GB limit they travel.

AT&T claims their average DSL customer uses around 18GB a month, and these changes will only impact about 2% of all DSL customers -- who the company states consume "a disproportionate amount of bandwidth."

...

Im in the western ma area around springfield and DSL speeds around here are 768/1.5/3.0 pretty sucky compared to what i'm seeing from folks posting here.

You should never tell these bastards what you will live with they will just go below it and tell you what a great deal they are giving you. The line you draw should be NO CAPS period. A lot better bargaining position. The reason being is Bell refused to give the CRTC the real numbers citing that it would give the competition to much information. Lies Lies Lies. Telus and Bell both use each others telephone lines for internet connections. You telling me they don't know what each others usage is. Bell doesn't have lines in Western Canada and Telus doesn't in Eastern Canada. So don't be such a wimp and cave in because you want to seem fair, Corporations aren't fair, they will walk all over you until they have every last cent you have.

18 GB/month average per user? Sorry, but that sounds like a total load of shit to me.
Do you think it's higher or lower than what the AT&T guy stated?

I a slight idea what my consumption is, but not to any level of accuracy. I've been a loyal AT&T DSL customer for almost 5 years (mostly due to not having any other broadband choice). But once this cap is in place and once my 12-mo. contract runs out (I renewed it last year to get a better rate), I may jump to clear.com, once I find out from others how their quality is (reliability and bandwidth) in my neighborhood.

With my current UVerse speeds I can hit the 250GB cap in 26.3 hours. I guess I get 1 day of internet usage per month now.

Oh, you can still get unlimited data usage. You'll just have to pay $10 for every additional 50 GB. :(

I am speaking for myself and myself only here, but I use NetLimiter to keep track of my bandwidth usage. I can view bandwidth usage to the very hour of any day, any week, any month, any year (so long as it is in NL's records). I compared it to my ISP's usage meter and I have to say that it's somewhat accurate.

I have Suddenlink btw.

I go over 1TB a month and no, most of it's not from video. Though I do consume a lot of video. I don't use the crappy "HD" streams that are out there.

A 1080p movie that I stream is usually around 20-25GB for one movie. I'm looking for BluRay quality and nothing less.

I also rip my BluRays to hard disk and sync it with my crashplan account for online backups.

I also download and upload lots of data for work from my home.

There are plenty of other ways to chew through lots of data.

Do you think it's higher or lower than what the AT&T guy stated?

With Netflix, Hulu, and plenty of other HD video streaming sources, I'm guessing considerably higher for a lot of users.

Then again, they probably factor in the lower-end outliers (i.e. the little old lady who does nothing but check her email and light web browsing), but conveniently leave out the higher-end outliers.

It would be nice if at least what unused bandwidth you have rolls over to the next month, like cell phone minutes with some companies.

It also stinks that each user is locked to 150/250gb when some will hardly use any at all. So the low users's extra bandwidth is wasted and not given to the more bandwidth intensive users. :(

Ooo ouch. Wonder how many people that will affect.
Loving my Sky ADSL2+ over here, would like fiber but it's kinda monopolised at the moment.
