AT&T To Cap DSL Internet Data Usage At 150GB

People are going to migrate to 4G internet for home soon.... I use 3G (Full bars) on Tmob and my internet is far more than I ever need. 500-600kb/sec on full 3G, so 4G is easily going to take over the entire "home internet" business soon.

If you were smart, you would make your own ISP right now, and resell AT&T, T-Mob, Sprint, whatever you can find as "home internet" if the person lives near a 4G antenna, they will love it 9 times out of 10.

And I know some people, like the download hogs on this site, will be the exception to what I said above.... but for the "median user" I truly believe wireless internet will be going into homes soon, replacing and killing off comcast and AT&T copper broadband

while that may be true on paper, i've been using cable from different ISP's in two different states at three different address in the last 10 years and i have never had a problem caused by any spiking ......DSL on the other hand, when i used it at my parents house acted exactly as you describe, it was slow, fast, slow.........never consistent, but on it's fastest day it was dog slow compared to my always fast cable connections

It all depends on your location! I had cable here...it was fast in the mornings and slower than dial up in evenings, that is, when it worked at all. Shared bandwidth sucks.

I finally went with 6.0 MB DSL and have not had a slowdown since.

Not for hardcore gamers. Wireless with 200-600 ping would be great wouldnt it?

I last posted here 5/1/2011 and still my usage meter does not work. I log in and here is what I get:

"Note: Your usage is not yet available for display. You should not be concerned about your usage for billing purposes. AT&T will keep you informed about your data usage via email.

To learn more about how to manage your usage, please visit www.att.com/internet-usage."

I know for a fact I have gone over a bunch of times yet still no emails and I have paperless billing so no notices of any kind.

ping is not king

My 4g phone gets 25mbps with 90 ping.

Clearly you don't know what you're talking about.

+1

i have played intense online multiplayer games with my 4G phone tethered to my desktop with higher than wired ping but without any issues because of the bandwidth

Yea, and how many people are on 4G currently? Come talk to me in two years about ping and download speeds.

I was among the first on Verizon 3g and my speeds steadily increased throughout the years as network coverage and reliability improved.

No reason why the same won't happen with 4g.

Technology doesn't stand still.

I just want to add a minor update, my billing cycle end on 9/20/2011 and on that day I receive my 90% usage warning. I was like ok, I should be safe. and boom.. today i got hit with a email say that I ma overusage and say I am over by 70 gig. I find that very hard to believe...

Speaking of. I'm TIRED of not being able to see my total data usage. If I can be charged for going over my limit, I for damn sure better be able to see how close I am. I talked to a representative and they said that they can't tell me how much I've used, but if I go over the cap they'll let me know. It's so fucking backwards it's mindboggling. I'm thinking there has to be a custom firmware or something out there for home routers that track such things, but the statistics should still be easily viewable from your account with your ISP.

I feel your pain and I'm in the same boat. I've been nervous about downloading too much. Heck, even my cell phone still has unlimited data, but my home Internet doesn't. I configured my phone to use Wi-Fi at home since it's faster, but if I start getting close to the limit, I'll have to turn off Wi-Fi. And once I get a 4G phone in a couple years, that will be faster than AT&T DSL can ever dream of.

What a PoS site AT&T has for users. (As if that's anything new.) I finally remembered my login info, so I logged in. I went to http://www.att.com/internet-usage. I then clicked on DSL Internet Details > DSL Internet Past Usage Report to generate the usage reports. They list non-zero data for April, May, and June. Everything before and after that 3-month period is shown as zero. Yet if I click on DSL Internet Details, I see my daily usage for this month and it seems about right. What a crappy site. Anyway, so far I haven't exceeded the 150 GB cap, but it'd be nice to get reliable data usage info from AT&T.

I wish being they do not want to upgrade a major chunk of their network and have the lock down on the teleco service in most areas (they block aggressively if someone wants to compete) that they should sell off the areas they refuse to upgrade.. It totally sucks having just capped 3g services as my only option.. We are not even in a rural area, its just one of those F'd Up buildout areas that gets close but no cigar... I'm not the only one noticing this either
