ASUS Z97M-Plus being fussy with m.2

My gaming rig's Plextor m.2 module recently started failing, so I'm trying to replace it. This ASUS Z97M-Plus supposedly had NVMe support added in a BIOS update, which I did a while back. This board is out of style now so it's unlikely to get any more BIOS updates.

I bought a Toshiba m.2 NVMe on eBay, swapped it out, and turned it on. Originally the Win10 media wouldn't even boot, just BSOD'd for a storage driver. I reset the BIOS to default, turned off CSM, and tried again. Win10 booted, sees the m.2, and installed fine, but on reboot, the BIOS threw up a box saying this storage doesn't support booting and to adjust the CSM. Nothing I did with the CSM helped and looking around online, I couldn't find anything resembling my issue.

Anyone run into an issue like this? Googling gave some vague "ASUS doesn't play well with m.2" type responses. Alternatively, is anyone using an ASUS Z97-based board with an m.2 they can recommend?

Is your Windows 10 media newer, i.e. >= Creators Update?

I had issues installing to NVMe on ryzen with my initial release Win10 media.
