A few years ago I owned a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. I purchased it new in September 2006 and kept up with regular fluid changes and required maintenance. I paid the car off in September of 2011, and enjoyed not having any car payments for awhile. The car caught fire 2 Jan 2013. I was on the way to the dealership because the car was making some odd noises, but when I was about halfway there, something popped. My car instantly felt weird and began spewing smoke. I was on 35W south, near the 30/287 interchange, and really didn't feel safe trying to stop on the side of the highway. While I felt unsafe in my car, I decided I'd rather not get hit by a truck without the protection of a vehicle. I took the first exit I could, which ended up being 30W. Since that exit ramp is so long I probably should have stayed on 35 and took the next exit or found a wide shoulder to stop on. Soon after I exited the highway, a fire started under my hood and there was now an immediate need to find a safe place to stop. I quickly lost power steering and my brakes, but my car wasn't going that fast. I couldn't have been going any faster than 20mph. I had to use my emergency brake to stop, and I ended up in some office building's parking lot. I hopped out and called 911. I was lucky - I suffered no injuries, the fire department arrived quickly, and I had a decent jacket on (it was super cold outside). I did have to wait over an hour for the tow truck driver, who ended up dropping me off at Jake's Hamburgers in downtown Fort Worth before he dropped my burned out vehicle in a salvage yard. I had a nice big burger, two Negra Modelos, and waited for my grandfather to pick me up. I bought a new 2013 Civic twelve days later and things have been pretty good so far :)

A friend of mine has a motion racing simulator he rents to vendors for use at trade shows to demonstrate their products. In 2011, Asus arranged to have it at the booth for Pax Prime. I went with said friend to help load/unload the machine. When we pulled up to the gate for the loading docks at Washington State Convention Center, we were met by a Hispanic guard asking us where we were going. We told him we were there to make a delivery for Asus. He gets on his radio and shouts (it was a noisy loading dock), "Jesus! There's some guys here for you with a big trailer!". We had to stifle our laughing to correct him. "No, no, no, not 'Hey-soos', 'A-soos!'."

This is the simulator in action at Pax Priime 2011, and not in Jesus' living room.

I'm just starting into sim racing(and getting quite involved heavily as of now). To start, I have build my own 2 simdash/button boxes that are Arduino based(in my case, im using a Teensy board to perform the same).

Also, I have developed my own inverted pedal stand. And modifications to all springs in each pedal to simulate higher performance and tension strength and put a bit of a load on the brake pedal which feels very real.

When I was 9 in early August back in 1989, I had decided I was going to go to my nearby single basketball court at the park out of the blue and shoot hoops because I was playing Zelda 2 all day and getting nowhere in Ganons castle and I finally gave up and threw my controller at the TV and kicked the NES off with my foot.

This was really odd for me as I never was into basketball at all as a kid, I much prefferred soccer and played on the YMCA teams for years, so my dad gave me a strange look when I said I was gonna "shoot some hoops" at the park out of the blue, but he shrugged and said "Fine, be careful"

The park was less than a block up a hill from my house and being a kid, I of course was dribbling the ball, albeit poorly while walking up the side of the road, so I kept missing the ball or hitting it wrong with my hand and it kept bouncing off to the side or on the neighbor’s lawn.

Halfway to the park, I hit the curb with my ball and it shot out to the middle of the street, which I promptly jumped out to get and I got about 2 steps and then....nothing. Total blackness.

The next thing I remember was waking up with my face looking to the sky, laying on the rough concrete with a thick blanket over me, my dad pacing backing and forth nervously with his arms crossed and my mom holding my hand with tears in her eyes. When they noticed my eyes opened they instantly fell on me and starting to calm and quiet me as I tried to talk and figured out what happened. I looked around and I noticed the ENTIRE neighborhood was surrounding me, looking at me with really worried and desperate faces and then started to clap and talk when they realized I had woken up. Now I was beginning to freak out a bit, but before I could think much, I was carried into the ambulance with my mom and dad looking over me the entire time, talking calmly to me enroute to the hospital.

Basically what had happened is the moment I jumped out into the street for the ball, a lady was driving down the hilly street directly towards me and had the late afternoon summer sun shining in her eyes, trying to find a house address and simply didn't see me in time and thus, wham!

What REALLY makes this story unique and sorta scary was PREVIOUS NIGHT, I had a dream that visually played out EXACTLY what happened to me after being hit by the car. My dad walking around, my moms face, the time and position of the sun, the placement of the people from neighborhood, the ball bouncing into the street, was EXACTLY what happened the following afternoon after I woke up in a confused state, thinking to myself:

"Man, that was a depressing dream..."

Needless to say, I’ve been very watchful and wary of anymore dreams like that for the rest of my life.

So,

I had been saving a very long time to pay for my dream car: a corvette. While not the ultimate dream car it was barely within my means. I also knew this would be the only time I would have a corvette before I retired.

I personally ordered this one from the factory and had it hand inspected by the museum and delivered at the corvette museum in Bowling Green Kentucky.

About a month later I was stopped in a traffic jam when some idiot clipped my new corvette hard. It bent the frame and did over $10,000 worth of damage. The car was never the same. Needless to say I took a serious hit on the resale.

Well the jackhole who hit me, took off right after he hit me. Some ass of a student from India. Well I got his plate and the police caught him. He appeared in court and they let him off with a warning and fine for a felony (hit and run)

Well Mr Jackhole now works for my company. He thinks I don't remember him. But I do. I wonder if I should ask HR to check his resume for the felony he likely didn't list.

Started having 'odd' sensations in my chest when I was in my 30's. Best way to describe it is that it felt like my [H]eart was beating [H]ard or [H]eavy. Had it checked several times while in the military and with a few civilian MD's. Nada.

Back in the summer of '09, I went to my local GP complaining of the same issue having started up again. He didn't like the results of the Holter monitor and ordered an 'echo'. Didn't like what he saw on that and ordered a CT scan. This is what that looked like:

The redder area in the middle is my heart. My ascending aorta comes off of the top of it, makes a u-turn and curves down towards my kidneys. The aorta should be about the diameter of a standard garden hose for its entire length. My ascending aorta was about the diameter of a radiator hose. It was already in the operable range as it exceeded 5cm (2+ inches) when discovered.

I ended up having surgery on Tuesday, 8 September, 2009. I was on the table for 5 hours as they replaced my ascending aorta with a DACRON® tube. They had me on my feet in ICU the next day and in a standard recovery room the day after that. That Saturday, the 12th of September, I went home. After 2 months of recovery for my sternum to fuse, I returned to work.

During my recovery, I bought the components of what was then a monster PC. Still using that same ASUS P6T Deluxe OC Palm as the heart of my system. Winning this would qualify as all the 'excuse' I need to finally start a new build. Have a couple of SAS SSD's I can't use as the old Marvell controller won't play nice with them and I have no slots available for a new controller card.

Live every day as if it were your last and don't die regretting the things you didn't do. Good luck all:)

I love to travel and recently while on a much needed vacation in Germany I got to visit a place that warmed my heart and made me feel like a kid on Christmas morning again.

My wife and I visited Computerspielemuseum in Berlin (Video Game Museum). It was simply amazing, going through all the history and seeing the hardware and talent that went into my childhood enjoyment was really inspiring. I do advise anyone interested in visiting that you must play pain pong when you're there, it's the way pong was meant to be played.

I recently went hiking for the first time. As in serious, many mile hiking in a park.

I fell over a stump about 10 miles away from my car. Here's my ankle.

I'm never going hiking again.

Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The car had smashed so hard

The screen shot above was taken to prove to my best friend that Windows 7 does not take 250GB of space. My friend was under the impression the primary reason for his 500 GB Samsung 840 being close to full was due to Windows 7 bloat. I told him Windows takes around 40 - 50GB of disk space and his plethora of games was the primary causal factor. He swore up and down it was Windows "taking over".

Two days later a HDD crash forced me to reinstall my OS. The snapshot was taken after two games and MS Office was installed. He has since uninstalled a couple games.

Do I need a story when a picture is worth a thousand words?

Years ago, a guy was having a midlife crisis, so to speak. Geek at heart, geek children, gaming was fun and cool. "High speed" internet was rare and files were shared between gaming at LAN parties.LAN parties were cool. For years, Geeks of all ages came and had fun. They were accepted as a peer among fellow Geeks and Gamers. This group had fun, ended up raising nearly $20,000 for charity doing an annual "Frag-A-thonN".
The life of the founder changed. The 'crisis' resolved itself in a direction not anticipated at all. The LAN parties went on for a bit longer, even tho they were getting smaller and smaller. Between broadband being more available, and WoW, and lack or prize support, the LAN parties stopped. They attempted to start again, but that lasted for a short time.

Demand is back in a way. Now that the "kids" are older. Forget monthly. We're talking twice a year. 21 and over... call us stupid, call us Geeks... we're gonna have some fun.

My friends had warned me that down the road in pursuit of power and silence lay madness and destitution. Turns out attempting to replace the fan on a Zalman CNPS 9700 with something quieter like a Silenx effizio 100mm fan is doable, but winds up being a useless failure. It also brings pain. :p

One of my best friend I have is my dog Weeman. He is always waiting for me at the front door, jumping up and down when I come home from work. He thinks he is a big dog always barking at other dogs but when the big dogs comes close he runs behind me for protection! I got Weeman when I went to the Animal Shelter. I was lucky to be the first person there that morning to adopt him. This is a picture of Weeman when he was just a puppy!

Long time ago it seems like I gave mining a shot and it was a pretty good learning experience for me at the time. I only did it for a month and had no casualties thankfully in that period of time. One day (long after mining was devalued) I took apart my GPU from its block and found something interesting on the card itself. Something popped without my knowledge and the funny thing is the card was still working fine for weeks before I took the block off for an inspection. I eventually RMA'd it to EVGA and it was working fine up until I sold it weeks later. :p

I keep finding these in old empty abandon buildings that have old computers laying around. I don't know why I keep them, I guess because at one point they were amazingly fast and it reminds me of younger days when I couldn't afford them and now I pick them up for free.

Maybe I should make keychains out of them?

Niece wanted to paint her nails and she wanted to paint her mommy's and uncles to so.. I was being nice and let her. She didn't do to bad with mommy's help lol

I really like hard drives. :D

1 SSD is for my work OS (C#, SQL, MVC.NET etc). 1 SSD is for my gaming OS. And the big RAID 10 array is for all my documents, code, databases, movies, music, save game back ups etc.

The nice thing about keeping two separate OS's for work and play is you can permanently disable tons of services you don't want running while you game. It makes for a more stable system in addition to keeping it optimized for games. The less services you have running, the less programs you have to worry about crashing or referencing incorrect memory. I also don't have to worry about turning off CrossfireX when I'm coding instead of gaming.

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
Just Sit Right There
I'll tell you how I became a tech lover

In Southeast Minnesota born and raised
In my room I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And playing some console games after school
When a couple a guys who were up to some good
Started making waves in my neighborhood
I got into one little game and I was hooked
They said 'You're buyin' a PC on Zipzoomfly'

I begged and pleaded with my mom day after day
But she shook and head and wouldn't give me money
She told me I'd have to use my own cash for it
I went to college and used my first loan payment to build my own PC

Okay...That is a terrible adaption of the song but I'm a bad singer and apparently an equally bad song writer.

PS: All the above may or may not be true.

I was searching for a few pics I had taken from the Montour Trail ( bicycle trail in the Pittsburgh area) however I found this one from my office at work. What are the odds any of these will install on this motherboard?

In 1909 EM Forster wrote The Machine Stops, a story about a post-apocalyptic world in which we all live within and rely upon machines to live. Everyone is in their own private room/cell and use these machines to communicate as well, with very minimal contact with one another or the natural world (which is supposedly uninhabitable). As time moves on, the Machine becomes deity to humanity. I wont ruin the ending.

Everyone should read this story as it had some amazing revelations about the future of technology and humanity.

I created a painting immediately after reading it for the first time, aptly titled "The Machine Stops." It is 2' x 2' on wood, using acrylic paints and mediums, metal effects paint and rust catalyst, keyboard keys, and various PCBs from electronics.

Hello!

I don't really have any great stories to tell, but after looking through my old pictures in the folder labeled "computer stuff", I thought I'd share one of the best motherboard and videocard combo's I ever used, years ago back in the day. If I remember right, I flashed this ATI Radeon 9500 into a 9700 which was the top card of the time! Anyone remember that?

So one time long long ago a friend and I decided to make homemade sloppy joes using BW3's hot bbq sauce.

It turns out that when the sandwich is loose meat swimming in the sauce its a bit hotter than how it is on wings.

I once was putting together a pc build in class, in front of my classmates. I was a noob and somehow put the dimms in backwards. When I turned the pc on the room filled with magic smoke. I will never forgot that and as a result, will never force ram in the wrong way lol

It looked something like this.

Big poker player here, have bi-weekly tournaments that I've been hosting for almost 2 years now. One thing about poker tables is lots of stuff gets spilled on them. After a buddy spilled some very nasty dip spit all over the felt I made this spill proof top. The whole table had been plastic dipped and an acrylic resin poured on top of the bottle caps:

Also my Z87 has been crapping out on me so this would be super sweet! :D

Okay, here's my story...

Back in 2000 my buddy and I took a business vacation to Microsoft Tech-Ed in Orlando, FL. (Business in that someone was paying for our Tech-Ed related expenses.) It was a two week road trip the first two weeks of June 2000. We had a great time during Tech-Ed but even more fun in the surrounding area. We visited Disney's Animal Kingdom, Epcot Center, and MGM parks, Universal's park, Guinness World Record Experience, Ripley's Believe it or Not, Race Rock, and other places in Orlando. Then we went to two of my favorite places - Daytona and NASA (Cape Canaveral). Did the Petty Ride-Along thing - that was fantastic! Being a NASCAR fan, taking a couple of laps around Daytona International Speedway at 150+MPH was an absolute thrill. Being a space fan, going to NASA was a lot of fun too. All-in-all it was a great vacation!

I took the picture below with my brand new Kodak DC290 1.3MP camera. The pretty girl was about to walk away and I told her to stay. "You make the car look better" or some crap like that. She smiled and struck that pose. Great shot!

I've been doing martial arts for years. 20+ in fact.

almost 6 years ago I found HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). Not much different than any of the Oriental Martial Arts.

One of the coolest things is fighting in armour... This is me teaching a class on Harnischfechten last year. My armour is typical German style armour from about 1470-1480. It was custom made for me based on a couple of surviving examples in European museums. Armour wasn't typically polished bright steel...

I identified a bent pin which had been corrected on a Z87 MB. The OP at a different computer hardware enthusiast WEB site posted a photo of the fixed mother board and asked if anyone could locate the pin which was bent but corrected. I identified the pin and circled it. Here is the photo with the corrected/bent pin circled by me in red.

Time for mine!

About 3 years ago, I decided to propose to my girlfriend. After racking my brain, I decided to mod a level of super mario brothers, ( her favorite game, actually she loved yoshi). I changed it so that the words "Will you marry me?" were spelled out.

Now, she's very crafty, and knew I was thinking of asking her. So, I had to be slick in my delivery and couldnt just do it any old way. I needed LAYERS of deception to start my marriage. So,

Layer #1: I told her to dress nice and that we were going to go out to eat someplace nice. At this point I knew she would think something was up, as we rarely go out out and I NEVER say "put on something nice".

Layer #2: "Oops! I left my card at my house! I guess we will have to stop by to pick it up".

Layer #3: I had all of her best friends from when she was in college hiding in an adjacent room to the the kitchen in my house.

Layer #4: Surprise! happy belated birthday party! ( One of the things she said was that I couldn't propose to her on her birthday, so I just held a "party" a few days later. All of the friends invited to the party knew what was going down) . I knew this would completely throw her off. Also, the party was mario themed. :)

Layer #5: "Lets play mario, you first!".

Okay, so at this point she read the proposal on screen, started bawling, and I presented her with this ring:

RoaDgWd.jpg

I had worked for 6 months with a custom ring builder to make this ring from scratch. We formed a 3d model and talked back and forth until we got it just right. She loves everything braided and likes sapphires better than diamonds.

oh! she said YES! We have been married for 2 years now. I wouldn't change it for anything. Although, now that i'm married, I find it exceeding difficult to make Computer part purchases for myself, so a new motherboard would be excellent!

Thank you [H] and ASUS for the opportunity!

Back in 2004 my friend was getting into Auto-X and asked me if I wanted to give it a shot. I went to my first event and was overwhelmed/confused by all the cones on the course and was wondering how the heck you figure out where to go.
After the first event I was hooked. I was an ok driver and basically drove to better myself since I couldn't really compete with the other cars/drivers in my class. My car had certain mods that bumped me up to a class where my car was not very competitive. But I did enjoy it for a few years.

I have Ankylosing Spondilytis which is a type of arthitis and I've had it since I was a kid and started getting worse as I aged.
It started getting worse a few years ago and I had to stop auto-x'ing, back and neck were fusing so I could no longer bend my back and can no longer move my head.
In June of 2014 my right hip went out on me and I had to start using a cane to get around, and in December my left hip went out and now I can hardly get around.

I have no money, no job, no health insurance, was denied medicaid again, can't get into my Formula, I struggle getting into normal cars, have a hard time getting into and out of bed, so I am pretty much fucked,
so I just sit here in the garage at the computer and surf the web wondering how am I going to make some money to pay for my bills.

When I was trying to install my tablet into my car, a cheap chinese power supply fried my tablet. I had to buy a new motherboard for it. It sucked. The End.

In 2008, I won my first MECA world title in Drive-by/Park&Pound 2. Hit 131.9 decibels over a 30 second average with the meter 6 feet away from the car. In a 2 class with two 15" subwoofers, I was only allowed to use 80 amps of fusing. I was using two 3000 watt Sundown Audio amps strapped at .5 ohm each. The pair was capable of drawing 600 amps of current. To get around this, I built a fuse block that used 16 5 amp fuses in parallel. It was still 80 amps of fusing, but could handle well over 600 amps before the fuses would blow. The next year, they changed the rules to limit the number of fuses that you could use. Anyway, here is a picture of the fuse block. You can see the 16 5 amp AGU fuses and I also had a ANL bypass for testing.
