Last night I was playing ER on my laptop in sig and during a boss fight the screen just went black and the laptop shut off. After a bit of time I tried to turn it on, the keyboard lights (and custom color map) come on, but the display never does, not even the backlight, and after a few minutes it just shuts off. I tried connecting it to an external display (tv in a hotel room via HDMI) but no dice there, will try other displays when I get home but I'm guessing she's toast. I feel like if it were the GPU the display would still come on using integrated graphics, so maybe the CPU? Any recommendations on what I could try?

Pretty disappointing to only get 18 months out of it.

that sucks!
what were you using it on? a hard flat surface, right?
remove the battery and ac, hit power a few times and let it sit 5min. put it together and try it again. could try pulling the ram and see if it beep or flashes at all, just to see if there is any life left in it.
make sure the ac isnt overheating too.

Yes it was on a hard flat surface. This thing has always ran incredibly hot so I’m guessing the failure was heat related.

This is kind of embarrassing but last night I was chatting with Asus tech support and they had me hold down the power button for 40s, release it, wait a minute or so, and turn it back on. This performed some kind of hard reset and the laptop actually turned on and seems ok.

Still can’t help but wonder if this could still be the beginning of the end for it. I’ve never re-pasted a laptop but I’m thinking this needs it.

good, at least its back up and running.
might have been a one time thing, hard to say. are you using any type of fps limit? setting it to cap at the screen refresh may reign it in a bit.

Maybe repaste it and see if you can undervolt the gpu/cpu any

So I bought an Asus ROG Strix G18 a month ago on Amazon. It went completely dead all of a sudden, there is no power, no lights at all when plugged in, won't start up from the battery. Naturally, pressing the power button for 40 seconds didn't do anything, either. Long story short, I want to return it asap, but it has Windows all set up. I have a password set but that doesn't put me at ease tbh - there are tons of bookmarks and saved passwords in my browser, and my photo collection on the local drive. What can I do to protect my data when I can't even start up the damned laptop?
pull the battery, unplug it and press and hold the power for a min. try it again. still dead? start an rma and ask asus about the data, they might just let you hang onto the drive or ok popping it out for recovery.
