If you are looking for a video card to replace the aging GPU in your system, Overclokcers Club says it is hard to go wrong with the ASUS Radeon HD 6950 2GB.

By using either ASUS Smart Doctor or the commonly available Afterburner overclocking applications I was able to push the speeds up for additional performance. However, to get to the top clock speeds the voltage had to be tweaked some to reach the final clock speeds of 965MHz on the core and 1505MHz on the GDDR5 memory. Any higher than 965MHz on the core and stability was dependent on the game or test and could be pushed as high as 976MHz on the core, again depending on the game or test.

I tend to take issue with that website. Some of their clock rates just don't really seem to make sense to me.

I mean, on Metro 2033, go to the very last chart. The overclocked 560 Ti is apparently doing 32 fps, which is 6 fps faster than a 580? Really? Can anybody explain this to me?

It was probably 22 fps, and mis-typed, drawing from the previous 4 charts.

Nice cards indeed, but hard to find at initial release prices.
Some go as high as other brands' 6970.
I bought one back in Feb, planning on getting a second one later, but for some reason they sell for way over than $300 bucks.

Hey, Nuke... is it new or used... and how much you want for it?
 
Slightly off topic, I haven't seen any XFX 6950 2GB cards at Fry's for a long time now, only the shitty Diamond brand. And even then I've only seen the 6950 1GB. Did AMD catch on to the 6950 flashing and decide to only produce the 6950 with 1GB, therefore making people that want that extra GB jump to the 6970 2GB card?
 
Are these still hard to find now? the one's based fully on the reference design???
 
Yep. They are hard to find at reasonable prices.
I bought mine for $290 shipped.

Now, they go for more than $350. It's ridiculous.
So much so that I thought of selling mine and buy 2 MSIs instead.

for 300, why would anybody not just got for a gtx 570? those things overclock like nobody business, 28% FPS increase post-OC in BFBC2.

A stock 580 is only 12% faster in FPS for that game, so overclocked, the 570 has about a 16% advantage in FPS performance OVER the GTX 580 (a 500 dollar card). Usually a good overclock on a card give you 10% more, so in my opinion, the 570 OC'ed is beast.

a 6950 flashed to 6970 speeds would be faster than the gtx 570 , esp as you increase resolution.

Your also looking at 70watts power savings stock or a 40w power savings at 6970 levels.

Then there is also triple monitor gaming on a single card


I got my 6950 at launch for $275 after rebate I believe and its served me very very well .

I don't see what 28% increase your talking about? All I see in that link is a GTX 470 stock compared to a GTX 570 OC.
 
I'm particularly interested in this review since I ordered one of these from newegg tuesday (open box $222 shipped).

Interesting that they OC'd it but didn't try flashing it to unlock the shaders. I'm left wondering if unlocking it would affect the clock speeds they reached or not. Either way, I can't wait to get my hands on this card! I just hope it gets here today so I can fiddle with it over the weekend, I ordered it on 5/31 w/3-day "guaranteed" shipping, current estimated delivery date is 6/6...

Because the stock 570 vrm section is underpowered, and there are reports of card deaths even with mild voltage bump or memory speed increases. There's at least one custom 570 with an improved power section though iirc, but I bet it isn't the cheapest.

Anyways, I couldn't find this particular Asus 6950 on Newegg, surprising. I was looking at the HIS model a couple weeks ago.

Mine won't clock much past 900. First new cards I have had since the AGP era, the performance is...ahem...impressive. Looking at what people are paying for these used it looks like I made a good choice for once.
 
I have one of these cards - shaders unlocked OK and running at 880/1250. Stable and pretty quiet.

Probably could go higher on the GPU clock, but only running at 1920x1080 so everything runs pretty well - rather have stability than push it too hard.
 
Got my card in monday, haven't had much time to play around with it yet, but the shaders unlocked just fine with a modified bios flash. Seems stable at 900/1400 w/stock 1.1vcore.

Whoa there. Diamond isn't a 'shitty' company. They don't sell as much in the USA as they do elsewhere, but their cards are just as good as most others.
