Asus released a special bios for their Asus P6T Deluxe version 2 motherboards today. This bios is designed to disable turbo throttling that can occur when heavily overclocking.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: So far this new 0001 bios is not 100% effective at curing turbo throttling. Your best bet if you have a v2 board is still to cross flash it with the 0006 v1 bios.

Here's a link to the 0006 v1 bios if you're interested in trying this.

Here's the cross flashing 101 manual:

Thanks Amurtigress.

If i7 Turbo shows that your i7-920 is able to maintain the full 21.000 turbo multiplier at full load then you don't need this bios. If i7 Turbo shows your multiplier sagging down at full load then this bios might be for you.

Read the included WARNING.txt file before installing it.

If you need this sort of bios but have an Asus P6T Deluxe version 1 board then you can download this file instead.

The v1 bios has been out since early July and is a proven performer.

Neither of these bios versions or this feature will ever appear on the Asus website. They are special versions for their valued, extreme overclocking customers.
Enjoy and thanks Asus. :D

Edit: Here's a special bios for the Asus P6T7 WS SuperComputer as well.

Is this the excuse I need to play with my work desktop? 920 D0 is begging to be drowned.

I have this board Deluxe V2 but have not seen this happening on my own system. Is it just any full load?

Too be honest, most users really have to be pushing their CPU to the limit to see the multiplier start to sag down. Turbo throttling is when the multiplier will start to bounce back and forth between 21 and 20 at full load on a Core i7 920. It will take a while for CPU-Z to report this which is why you have to use a program like i7 Turbo for a more accurate look at your multiplier.

The Intel Turbo Boost white paper says that turbo mode can be limited by:

• The estimated current consumption of the processor
• The estimated power consumption of the processor
• The temperature of the processor

This was a bigger problem with the original C0 processors compared to the newer D0 versions since they tended to need more core voltage for the same overclock.

These special bios versions are only needed for a very tiny percentage of users. It was nice of Asus to put the time and effort into creating these.

LinX / Linpack testing puts the biggest possible load on your CPU so if it doesn't cause turbo throttling then probably nothing will.

As mentioned, if your multiplier is stable at 21.000 when fully loaded then you don't need to use these special bios versions. The bios eliminates the protection that Intel builds into their CPUs so this bios is definitely not for most users.

Well right now i'm using 20x multipler for my current overclock. Turbo mode is disabled i've only used Prime 95 for stability testing so far. I will have to give Linx/Linpack a try, considering i'm on a 920 D0 at stock voltage I don't think I will have this issue but will check for it anyways.

This doesn't start to become an issue unless you are air cooled at approximately 4GHz and close to 1.40 core volts.

If you are not using the 21X turbo multiplier then you don't have to worry about that multiplier throttling back to 20X.

This new bios has now been tested and it works great on the Asus P6T Deluxe v2 boards.

Here's a good example of what these wonderful Asus P6T boards are capable of with a special bios and the appropriate cooling.

I just told Asus that there doesn't seem to be a need for this special bios for the entry level P6T or P6T SE motherboards. Not enough hard core users tend to use these motherboards and I'm not sure if the VRM is adequately designed to support unlimited overclocking.

If you are running your computer at 3.6 GHz then you might not be triggering any turbo throttling. If I'm wrong, post some screen shots of i7 Turbo while running Prime 95 or LinX. Include a log file from i7 Turbo so I can see your results and I will pass them along to my contact at Asus if you are having a problem.

When testing, make sure to disable all other monitoring utilities which can interfere with your results from i7 Turbo including any side bar monitoring gadgets.

Edit: This i7 Turbo log file is a perfect example of what you'll see if you have a turbo throttling issue.

Follow the CMULTI (Calculated Multiplier) column straight down. It starts out steady at 21.000 which shows the turbo is fully engaged. After a while as the heat builds up, the multiplier starts to cycle between 21 and 20. An average of 20.6 indicates that turbo mode is fully engaged only 60% of the time and the other 40% of the time, the multiplier is at the 20X default. The Standard Deviation column is very low which shows that all 8 threads are reporting the same thing. This log file was taken while running Prime95.

As soon as the load stops, the multiplier jumps back up to 21X and makes it look like all is OK.

Bump, for a fix request on the P6T (vanilla) BIOS.

I can't speak for users of the P6T SE, but I know a lot of overclockers who purchased the regular P6T rather than pay the price difference at the time for the P6T deluxe.

Also:
Neither of these bios versions or this feature will ever appear on the Asus website. They are special versions for their valued, extreme overclocking customers.

While it's good to feel appreciated and given a 'special' version of the BIOS, it seems like a given that when new BIOS updates are rolled out to the site, anyone with the 21x fix will have to choose between that -or- the latest updates. I don't see the use in branching the BIOS lines, and if Joe Average isn't likely to tinker with the multipliers in it then I don't see the harm in implementing the fix for everyone.

Does anyone know if the 704 bios fixes this i'm currently running it. Still on a 20x multi but curious

I'm in the same situation. Didn't need the extra features of the Deluxe and just would like to be able to take my 920 as far as it and the mobo will allow.

im a noob at flashing bio's. i have a P6TD Deluxe and i want to flash this. i use windows 7 64 bit....any pointers?

All you need is a flash stick with the bios on it and during boot screen hit F2 for the the EZFlash program.
IIRC.
I just reflashed mine last week. I am pretty sure that how I did it. Might wanna check out the PDF Manual on ASUS's site though just to double check.

yeah but i keep getting an error saying it wont work cause its for p6t deluxe and not p6td deluxe.

I was having trouble oc'ing my w3520 because of this asus throttling crap...

Just cross-flashed version 0006 to my p6t deluxe v2...worked like a charm! Now happily stress testing at 4.5Ghz :D Thank you so much for the link...that throttling was really beginning to piss me off.

I dont believe you can crossflash the P6TD. I know people have crossflashed the P6T v1 and v2, maybe I'm wrong but I havent seen this yet
