They way I understand it using the SPDIF on a sound card would be exactly the same thing as using SPDIF on a motherboard it is just a passthrough so it doesn't matter. The Asus M2NPV-VM doesn't come with one onboard, but the menual says there is a module you can buy that has an SPDIF out that you plug into a little hub on the motherboard and place the module on the back of the case. Does anyone know where I can buy this?
 
Ebay. I've bought several from some vendors their.

Search for someting like "Asus Bracket". Make sure you get the one one with the right connector. Some have a 6 pin some have 4.
 
i think i made my own just to try it out...

to get full functionality i ended up using AC3Filter (i couldn't get the spdif passthrough to work correctly without it)
 
I made my own SPDIF adapter from a spare PCI bracket, and a female coax jack from Front-X. Total cost: $6.60'ish. I had to move of of the leads in the three pin header, but it was nothing a paperclip couldn't handle.
