I have new results , once the 7970m has been OCed

max temp hitted in both runs (with a notebook cooler ) : 81°C

As you've seen, It's only 0.98v Apparently, sager put this value (clevo workload is 1.05v) That's why, I think, I get correct temperatures... BTW, I'm pretty satisfied with my 7970m. I think it's pretty good sample ... almost a Ghz @0.98v !

Nice stuff

I can do the same thing with my somewhat aging Alienware M15x laptop. Currently, I run a i7-740qm with a 5850 mobility. Lots of folks have pushed theirs to a 7970m, as well as the 6970m, and 6990m with the CPU upgrade to the 920xm or 940xm.

Wouldn't the 740QM be bottle-necking the 7970M?

Probably. That is why I would move up to a unlocked CPU, like the 920xm, or the 940xm. With the 740, I could probably top out a little better than the 5850 I have in there now (maybe as high as a 6970m), before the bottlenecking begins.

So, I keep my eyes peeled for good deals on the CPU upgrade, which I will do eventually. Once that is done, I will look at the 6990m/7970m setups! :D

If I remember from having my G73, the i7 740 can be OC'ed with SetFSB and throttlestop (I believe I was able to push mine all the way to 3.8ghz stable...). Also, I don't think it would be too much of a bottleneck, even at stock speeds, if you're gaming at 1920x1080 in most games.

In any case, as someone already pointed out, 7970ms run about $550-600 now which is about 40% the cost of a new Ivy Bridge laptop with a 7970m already installed -- not a very good price/performance proposition. Why this is really interesting is because the 7970m will drop drastically in price in a few months once a refresh is released.

Sager directly sells the 7970m for $430.00 so it isnt a bad price at all if you can afford the modest cost of already generally expensive mobile gaming performance.

The 7970M is a beast

Remeber as long as you have an MXM 3.0 slot you should be able to use the latest cards, the mxm spec is what allowed to the pci-e lanes and electrical power of max 100 watts to be available to the gpu.

Yeah the 7970m is basically an underclocked 7870, and they overclock well, up to 7870 GPU speeds (or better) but the memory generally doesn't quite go that high.Great cards tho!

Yea I would say in theory if you had a mxm 3.0 slot it would be able to use the latest card; however, you have to take in account ample power supply and cooling. If you dont have the cooling system to support such a card it wouldn't be logical to do so.
