Assassin's Creed Shadows

Oh well then, what an abomination of a game. Do we have 'proof' that watermelons could not have existed in this alternate reality?
Only if Japan had opened up their ports to foreigners earlier, if you're familiar with the history. Such is possible with any alternate timeline technically.

Edit: The watermelon insert with an inserted black man is really on the nose, even if the devs are totally unaware of the stereotypical racism part (I can't tell though).

Why not literally any other melon tho.

Honestly it’s more humorous than anything to get worked up over.

Guaranteed this will review around an 8.5-9/10. I’m feeling it. A true return to form for Ubisoft.

Would be interesting to look further into it. I guess it can even come into question how accurate information from that time is.

I feel like this is really just this actor trying to poke something to make people aware of him.

The game will be mediocre enough I don't feel like the watemelon will be the crux of its failing, it really is just silly and probably just the art team thinking they will be fun to roll around when the cart gets knocked over in a rush.

There's the Yubari melon, but I need to see if its native or introduced. There are probably purely native melons though.

Here's the following info for the watermelon:

"Watermelons were introduced to Japan from China in the beginning of the Edo Period (1603-1867)."

I think that since it was a foreign species, it would've been well written about due to the size & taste. As far as the ports go, I'm seeing mixed sourcing for the history about when the closed era started & ended.

Interesting.

I still do believe it is a small oversight, it would be nice if companies would slip out bits of a game for like a peer review or at least a way to find things like this. Millions of eyes on something is a whole lot of free review compared to a handful on the dev/art team.

This thread is now about water melons…
More so about historical accuracy than just the fruit, which AC has never been known for being 100%. The main issue here is lack of ownership by Ubisoft about such. Instead the devs sidestep, project & strawman their way out of the arguments.

Not even 50%

These are just silly video games. Getting upset about watermelons, and then morphing it into anger about a corporation ‘straw manning’ its customers!

“That fucking Ubisoft… putting watermelons in the pre-Edo period and then going for the straw man argument to get out of it! I was never going to buy this game… but now… well, now I’m going to double down on not buying it!”

Oh no! The outrage!

Wait for "the stars arent properly positioned for this era" "this constellation should be over here!"

If people went back and scrutinized their previous games I bet they could find tons of stuff that was not historically accurate. I doubt 99% of the game's fanbase is going to care about minor oversights like watermelons.

That's why I've said its never been 100% accurate. Watermelons can be easily handwaved away but the on-the-nose stereotypical racism connection is a bit odd.

Just wondering... is that one of the modded faces for Outlaws over the default (she's a bit more glam than anything I've seen from the official game)?

I was reading that AC Shadows might tank it but Ubisoft does have over 18K employees worldwide. I'm not sure how many are tied to this game.

I like Ubi games and the way they are going seems like straight to the gutter. With such a large studio I am actually worried we won't get ridiculous levels of Far Cry or Ass Creed or large open world games anymore. I also loved Avatar. Some of them have been great time wasters and lots of fun. Hoping that Ass Creed succeeds.

185/18K is a drop in the ocean though.

As for her face, that is the default face.

He doesn’t accept money from advertisers, period.

He made it clear in the video preview that his time spent with the game was done remotely. He won’t accept gifts of any kind, including free hotel accommodation and travel.

A preview of a game is just that, a preview. It’s not a sponsorship. He’s not getting paid anything for this. He’s doing it to inform his viewers of upcoming games.

Eventually, he’ll review the game. The review will be based on a complete playthrough of the game. He’ll pay for his own copy with his own money.

There is zero shilling going on here. He’s one of the only people on YouTube who’s completely clean.
This has already been explained to you. He is part of the access media. He buys access to the company by giving positive reviews. The access gives him an "in" which gives him content others won't have because they won't suck on the studio teat.

You’re making shit up.

Nice try though. Attempting to discredit the one honest reviewer who accepts nothing whatsoever from publishers.

And if you knew anything, then you’d know that Karak hasn’t been keen on anything Ubisoft in ages.

If you actually watched his Shadows preview then you’d know that he literally says, in the video, that he hasn’t truly enjoyed any Assassin’s Creed game since Odyssey.

He also made it clear that unlike virtually every other YouTuber who did a Shadows preview, and presumably stayed as a guest in a fancy hotel, he refused, and previewed the game from his home.

And if you had watched his Shadows preview then you’d know it was a preview - not a review.

Karak is one of the very few reviewers who will play a game right through to the end before giving his opinion of it.

Again, nice try to discredit one of the very few creditable reviewers left. Honestly, if you’re going to post about a linked video, you should watch it first, because clearly you did not.

Ignorance or refusal to understand doesn't change facts. Access media is a term with a definition and history. The person you linked to by your own words fits that definition.

He gets special access to the game that normal customers, even those that pre-ordered, can't get. His "payment" is that he gets to make money off of this, via Youtube/making videos and advertisements/Patreon. If he truly hates the game and speaks his mind, he may no longer get this special access. Which means less ability to earn money. He isn't getting a direct paycheck but still earns money from his special access. There is an unwritten rule across all industries, we give you some leeway/free stuff, you give us some leeway/praise. Doesn't matter what someone is getting early access to.

If you can't draw the connection, I am not sure what to tell you.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows pre-order guide

"If you’d like to pre-order this new entry in the stealthy and stabby franchise, we’ve compiled every version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows that’s currently available to pre-order, what you get with each edition, and where you can find them."

Previews have been around since the 1980s.

I used to read a magazine called Computer Gaming World and they would regularly have previews of games.

I would pay $2.50 for the magazine because the writers and the editors and the publisher needed to… you know… make money in order to live. CGW wasn’t shilling when they wrote about games. They were informing their readers about games. I mean, duh.

Karak, like any gaming publication of the last 45 years, actually is obligated to inform his audience of upcoming games - it’s part of his job description (shock! surprise!). To accuse him of being a shill, simply because he’s doing his job and previewing a game is asinine.

Of course he’s going to make money from doing this - just as CGW did in the 1980s… just as every publication since time immemorial has… because, here’s the thing, it’s kind of difficult to cover gaming 24/7 if you don’t have a paycheque.

The question is HOW is he making the money?

Without any evidence at all, you’ve accused him of ‘being favourable towards Ubisoft’ in order to ‘get access’ to their content… but the facts don’t support this.

He literally says in his preview that of the recent AC games only Odyssey (a game liked by many at this forum) really drew him in. Yeah… that’s not being favourable towards Ubisoft. He refused to attend the preview event (something no one else did) because he literally did not want to be influenced.

Of the recent Ubisoft games, Karak hasn’t raved about anything, but rather has been cold with almost all of it - again, not favourable towards Ubisoft.

He accepts no sponsorship from any corporation, he doesn’t attend previews for which he can be wined and dined, and he pays for every copy of his game - which ultimately means his only source of income is from his own audience

Which is exactly how it should be.

If they're cutting content that probably won't help much. If anything, it will skew the story to side quest ration even more unfavorably to side quests. Hopefully they spend more time making dialogue changes and whatnot, but not much can be done in such a short time. On one hand it is nice to see them respond to the backlash but it is too little too late and the result will likely still be subpar.

I bet you anything Yasuke's storyline was about racism and Ubisoft is scrambling to change it... I'd be fine with a 6mo delay to replace him with a Japanese guy.
It will be DLC. 👀
Pay 40 bucks to experience a black man’s journey in Japan - a land where DEI doesn’t exist… and he couldn’t be himself. Extra 5$ for watermelons.

Hah, I had no idea about the history of Sumo wrestling. Clearly a deliberate troll by Ubisoft. I figured it was just the typical insert female here to be big mama fighter type.

Also…

There’s this thing called… Wikipedia.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women's_sumo

“Professional sumo traditionally forbids women from competition and ceremonies. Women are not allowed to enter or touch the sumo wrestling ring (dohyō).[1] Despite this, women sumo wrestlers have existed through history and exist in the present day on an amateur level.”

“Various types of women's sumo existed, including touring "professionals". These continued to exist after the Meiji Restoration,[3] until women's sumo was cracked down upon by the Tokugawa shogunate and Meiji government, as they deemed the organizers of it to be corrupting public morals with these spectacles.[4]

Women's sumo continued to exist despite a government ban in 1926.[3] The practice would only die after the end of World War II, with the last group dissolving in 1963.[5]
