While the next Assassin’s Creed game will allow players to choose whether they want to fight as a male or female Spartan, Ubisoft has revealed that the latter, Kassandra, will serve as the entry’s canon character and provide the definitive story. Contrastingly, much of the promotional material, and even the premiere trailer, has focused on Alexios.

The description for the official Assassin’s Creed Odyssey novel on Amazon reads, “Greece, 5th century BCE. Kassandra is a mercenary of Spartan blood, sentenced to death by her family, cast out into exile. Now she will embark on an epic journey to become a legendary hero - and uncover the truth about her mysterious lineage.”

Are there cases where games don't? Only game I can think of where I didn't get a choice was Alien Isolation, but that was just part of the plot. Ripley had a daughter, so you were stuck being female. Not being combative, I haven't gamed much recently and don't know.

Seriously? Tomb Raider, Mirror's Edge. A number of others. It isn't exactly new, not even for Assassin's Creed.

What I don't like about this is one character isn't cannon. In Syndicate both characters (brother / sister combo) were both cannon and you switched between the two. Didn't even think of that when they announced Origins. Pretty much I'd play the female character only if I do play the game. One of those examples where having both sexes isn't ideal. It worked fine in Mass Effect because they let you choose from the start of the series and all in game references refer to her or him depending on what you choose. I did male Shepard first for ME1, but for ME2 and 3 I did Femshep first. But both characters were equally cannon in the ME universe.

Though at least it won't be as bad as Far Cry 4. In FC4 you're a silent avatar with no real character. Not that FC3/4 had great characters, but at least they had a personality. In FC4 you were just "Rook" the rookie. They took the lazy way out with that game.

If I have to stare at a backside for X number of hours, it may as well be a facsimile of a female backside.
As long as they don't do something ridiculous like make her a member of the Spartiate I don't think too many will have a problem with it.

Honestly have no clue what horrible accent that actor is attempting to replicate in the trailer.

I feel like we're moving to a world where every single game is an open world 3rd person adventure. I can only take so many ham fisted main/side quests before I lose faith forever.

But the real question is will she be as boring as the male Assassin's Creed characters that preceded her? I mean there's a long established history of boring dialogue, flat voice acting, and utterly unlikable characters to live up to :p.

I'm not a fan of the series, does it show? :D

Why the fuck is this even news?

Oh yeah, we have to consider the gender of every damn character from every form of media so we torment every normal person who doesn't give a fuck!

why would the male character not be the 'definitive' story as well?...are there major storyline branches that pertain only to the female character?

Mainly for references, likely in future games and extra lore. Kind of like how Edward Kenway had a lot of references in later games. Take Syndicate, there was a mission in which you sneak around his mansion.

I hope this female Assassin will have a hidden blade in her vagina for an extra level of stealth kill by snu snu or face sit.

Is this a serious question? I can probably count the number of games on my hands that actually allow you to choose a gender in a story oriented single player game.

It's virtue signalling. Look at us, how courageous we are for having a female hero. Yeah, and every game that did it before you without fanfare, and not for bragging rights.

I was asking about games that force the player into a female role. I have only played one, hence why I asked the question.

Thankfully, I'm not into AssCreed or pretty much any other Ubisoft game so I'll just watch from the sidelines with my bag of buttered popcorn.

There are probably more games like that, than those that allow choice. Not that I'd consider it a problem.

I don't like this precedence simply because I think if you allow the player to choose or make their own character then the story should be written without surface qualities in mind. The original Mass Effect trilogy did this well.
"Force." If the story was written with a female PC, then you're not being forced into anything. There are plenty of games out there written for a female lead.

I haven't played that one so I can't say how bad it is overall (I've seen clips of course) but never say never: This is Ubisoft. They are professionals at boring, unlikable characters.

I stopped playing the game 20 hours in, and restarted it with a male lead. I never even got back to my original progress and will probably never at this point. I don't know how its possible that the female made it through QC.

So tell me, if the female hero is canon, then why does all the artwork and promotional material on the official homepage depicting a male character?

Interesting if true. Personally I'd rather have a male character because it seems more fitting to the theme. I didn't mind Evie because she it made more sense for the time period and she relied a lot more on guns and silently taking down guys than getting into outright brawls. Also, Jacob was a fairly dumb character so I preferred her. This game seems to change the sneaky silent stuff and appears to revolve more around outright combat, which seems odd for the time period. I'd rather play as the male, but if he isn't cannon then why even have him?

Well you don't have to take my word for it: https://assassinscreed.ubisoft.com/game/en-us/home As I see, the only mention on the entire homepage on the female option happens on the characters page, everywhere else including on the front page, not a hint.

I suspect this was a late change, by the social justice representative. Otherwise why would all the covers and artwork ignore it?

I don't mean they added the female option late, because that is unrealistic, but I think they decided late that they should say that's canon.

I hope it doesn't affect the quality.
