Are the Audio Technica ATH-A900X still good for gaming? Need to replace A900's

I have been using a pair of A900's since 2006 or so and the the adhesive on one of the cans that holds the padding on finally gave out. I am in the market for a new headset for gaming and movies. Is the ATH-A900x the updated version of the A900's and is the sound on them still good for gaming? Are there any other headsets I should look at? If the A900X is the updated A900 with similar sound I will probably just get that since I love my A900's and the sound is awesome.

Audio Technica will sell you replacement pads, I've bought a couple pair myself. That said, the A900X are good but they definitely feel like they're for a smaller head and the pads aren't anywhere near as comfy to me. However, there's a set for sale in the FS/FT forum for $60 shipped and that's a pretty smoking deal.

This. Just get new pads. If you want, you can even upgrade the pads to A1000 or W5000 pads (I believe those are the models that are compatible, you can check on Head-Fi/online) and they are better constructed with more padding. And of course will not flake.

There is a slight difference between the A900's and A900x's, but not enough to warrant an upgrade if you already have the A900's. Unless you're an extreme can head and want to buy and sell all the time, what you have is already quality.

Another vote for new pads. Unless you're having trouble with cabling, drivers, or just want something new (doesn't sound like it if you're looking for a newer variant of what you already have) pads will be all you need.

Thanks for the replies.

Does the sound quality on headphones degrade over time? I have had this pair of A900's for ages. They still sound great, but if I was to purchase a new pair would they sound better in any way?

What is the best pair of pads for the A900's?

No, sound quality doesn't degrade at all. If anything, they sound better after the burn in period right up until the materials inside give up the ghost. If that happens you'll know -- buzzing and nastiness, they'll sound like shit. I doubt that'll happen any time soon though -- my dad still has a few pairs of Sonys and AKGs from the early 80s or late 70s that are perfectly fine.

Don't know about pads, you'll have to ask others about that. Unknown Souljur up there was suggesting W1000 or W5000 pads -- I'd look around on HeadFi if I was you and see what people say.

"Best" is of course subjective. W5000 pads work.

They are a 'tad' expensive however. Genuine leather etc.
Here is a reaction thread on Head-Fi. Only one reviewer at least in there. I didn't check around too hard. Google around if you want more "reactions". http://www.head-fi.org/t/221456/a900-w5000-pads

The A1000 pads are less expensive. But still cost a bit.
